On tuesday my DD3 was in shopping trolley which tipped over when my 3+4yr olds tried to stand on one side. The 4yr old did stand on it but 3yr old was just trying to. Between them they probably weigh around 4 1/2 stone. Anyways the trolley tipped over with DD3 sitting in the seat strapped in and resulted in her knocking her head on the floor. Obviously carted off by ambulance and spending around 30hrs on a ward due to them being concerned about bleeding on the brain.
Anyways since telling people when asking about huge bruising around 90% have said that they dont think the trolley should have tipped. The store have phoned last night and said they will be conducting an investigation with it being such a serious incident. So what I am asking is whether there is any responsibility with the store or whether it is just one of those things? I am wondering if people are all on this band wagon of claiming for money or it if it is something that shouldnt have happened considering how many children will be in the store probably doing similair.

For goodness sake. No I do not use a wooden spoon or belt on my children And anyone who knows my ds will know that he is more than a handful. My words are being taken way out of context, but luckily most here seem to understand what I meant. If you do not stop your dc's bad behaviour, then noone else is to blame if that same behaviour leads to an accident. My dc are far from compliant little ducklings, and nor would I wish them to be. But do I allow them to mess about if it would put them in danger? Hell no.

stoppinattwo · 10/07/2010 17:58

and neither are the ops children badly behaved....so stop summising

and ing it increadibly patronising so please dont talk down to people it is rude

jaamy · 10/07/2010 17:59

In our supermarket my children would be far safer in the trolley. My daughter was actually injured by another shopper who pushed their trolley into her head. I mostly shop on line now or go without children, though I don't see why I should and neither should OP because accidents happen!

What about vertically challenged adults??? Are they allowed to climb on the side of a trolley to get their shopping in/out? Often wondered how small people do a large shop if they can't reach the bottom of the trolley. They are quite deep. Seriously.

stoppinattwo · 10/07/2010 18:02

edam....I know the op is blaming herself...she was absolutely wracked with worry.

My point was trollies are not designed to tip and if this one did it could possibly have been defective.

The op is the most concientious risk averse person, who does (for the record) shop online a lot of the time...

Edam...I had a similar incident with a persil washing up tablet when DD was 18 mo

I turned and she had eaten half of it

stoppinattwo · 10/07/2010 18:03

jaamy stop please......

How do people get off bouncy castles!!

jaamy · 10/07/2010 18:03

Meant to add that isn't it a good thing that the supermarket is checking out the trolley to prevent similar happening again???? God forbid there's a design fault and it could happen to someone else (with or without toddlers climbing on it).

gerontius · 10/07/2010 18:03

No, trollies aren't designed to tip. But put two children on the side and it's fairly likely that they will.

jaamy · 10/07/2010 18:05

SA2 I was being serious!

Don't know to what you are referrring wrt the bouncy castle...and neither does DH!!

stoppinattwo · 10/07/2010 18:08

geronitius...sorry didnt realise you had a degree in trolley mechanics....how do you know this for a fact???

Ohhhhh I know there is a joke in there about my trollies (as my mum calls them)

sorry Jaamy...i had a vision of a top heavy vertically challeneged person falling head first into a shopping trolley

gerontius · 10/07/2010 18:10

I don't think you need a degree in trolley mechanics to work out that when two children climb on something that isn't fixed to the floor it'll fall over

jaamy · 10/07/2010 18:12

gerontius - the point I was making about adults standing on trolleys.. I have done that in the past to reach the last item at the bottom of a trolley and I (like most adults) weigh a hell of a lot more than 4 and a half stone (combined weight of OPs toddlers). The trolley hasn't tipped even though it was empty which does in fact beg the question whether there was a problem with the trolley.

" a top heavy vertically challeneged person falling head first into a shopping trolley " That's me!!!

SandyBits · 10/07/2010 18:14

I'm sorry stoppinat2, who's being patronising?

stoppinattwo · 10/07/2010 18:14

But you see in order to make such positive statements as "put 2 children on the side and it is faily likely it will" infers some trolley knowledge?

or were you just guessing?

stoppinattwo · 10/07/2010 18:16

Patronising...moi.....

I dont even know what it means

SandyBits · 10/07/2010 18:16

I rest my case

stoppinattwo · 10/07/2010 18:18

as long as you dont rest it on the side of a shopping trolley...it might tip up !!!

jaamy · 10/07/2010 18:19

LOL @ SA2

PeedOffWithNits · 10/07/2010 19:30

....But you see in order to make such positive statements as "put 2 children on the side and it is fairly likely it will" infers some trolley knowledge?.....

not specific trolley knowledge, no, but i do know a litle bit about the laws of physics in general, having got a grade A at A level, and gone on to teach Physics to GSCE level mysef! and i have to agree - but surely thats common sense anyway?

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 10/07/2010 19:37

The smaller trolleys are not safe for a child to stand on the side, ds (aged 6) has done this for a second and it has tilted, it's lucky I was there to shout hold it straight. He's never done it again. They do get up to all sorts as they are very quick, even when you have eyes on them.

I'm pleased your baby is OK.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 10/07/2010 19:45

I don't think the supermarket is to blame, and neither are you. You turned your back for a second, and they did what children will do - they pushed a boundary. I'm so glad that your DD is OK - what a relief for you.

stoppinattwo · 10/07/2010 21:07

Weeeeeeeelll Peed orf I'll see your physics alevel and teaching physics and raise you - errmm I'll play my structural mechanics card - degree level

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 10/07/2010 21:14

I bet there's a certain weight that will make a tolley topple over.

stoppinattwo · 10/07/2010 21:16

I think it also depends upon how much shoping she had done???

If she was getting strawbs it would have been quite empty....unless she put them in at the end so they didnt get squashed
