My neighbours all take their washing in at night. I hang mine out in the garden before I go to bed so it can dry in the morning (work FT so always in hurry in morning> Am I lowering the tone of the street?? My mother says yes!

But it will stay damp all night surely? DOes it not smell when eventually dried?

choufleur · 08/07/2010 21:28

no. I sometimes leave my out for days. Even if it rains a bit. I can't be arsed to wash it again.

duckyfuzz · 08/07/2010 21:28

if you are so am I!

sillybillymummy · 08/07/2010 21:30

I have washing out on the line as we speak!
One less job to do tomorrow morning!

bluecardi · 08/07/2010 21:30

Have some curtains drying outside

Comewhinewithme · 08/07/2010 21:31

Nah sometimes I put the school uniforms out and they are dry by morning .

dobbyssocks · 08/07/2010 21:31

If I'm feeling super organised and I know its warm & dry the next day I'll put it out the evening before to save the faff the next morning so YANBU!

OrmRenewed · 08/07/2010 21:31

Of course yanbu.

Tablefor6 · 08/07/2010 21:32

One full line put out at 8pm...will be dry by morning

PersonalClown · 08/07/2010 21:32

I may get off my arse and put my next load out now.

greensnail · 08/07/2010 21:32

Mine's been out since yesterday afternoon. I will try and get around to bringing it in tomorrow, hopefully.

Meglet · 08/07/2010 21:33

yanbu. I often put it out at midnight if I'm about to go to sleep and I remember there is some left in the washing machine.

The garden light goes on while I do it so lots of houses can see (if they are awake ), the neighbours must think I'm unhinged doing it at night.

kamsmum · 08/07/2010 21:36

I used to be a bit snobby about taking washing in before dark. Don't really know why. I have since discovered the joys of nocturnal washing - what a revelation! The clothes are dry in the morning and if they are not you just leave them till they are. One less thing to think about in the morning. Love it!!

amistillsexy · 08/07/2010 21:37

I put washing out overnight to get it cleaner! I think when the dew goes on it, that's nice fresh water, so it helps to give it a final rinse, IYSWIM. When you take it in the next day it smells beautifully fresh.

Secunda, my washing machine is struggling to cope with low temps/eco washing powder, and my washing sometimes does smell musty when I take it out of the machine, but a night on the line makes it smell fresh as a daisy!

OP, yaNbu, yab very sensible!

secunda · 08/07/2010 21:38

ooh, another corner to cut in my corner-cutting repertoire

Valpollicella · 08/07/2010 21:39

Yanbu. I put a load out last night. Dry by 9.30am this morning so another load could go on. Et voila...empty washing basket in less than 18 hours

I take full advantage of this kind of weather here by clearing it asap as when winter comes and you're trying to dry 3 loads, half outside to get the worst dampness off, then half inside on the radiator to finish them off drives me mad

judytzuke · 08/07/2010 21:39

Thank you for all the lovely posts - will copy them to my mother who has 'standards' about these things!

GoodDaysBadDays · 08/07/2010 21:44

Oh I love the summer as it means I can do the night washing thing!

Eglu · 08/07/2010 21:47

YANBU night drying saves time

PersonalClown · 08/07/2010 21:48

Still haven't moved.. too engrossed in Traffic Cops.

onepieceoflollipop · 08/07/2010 21:50

I have just started doing this. I think it is far better for delicate fabrics especially dark colours. all that baking in the heat of the midday sun fades the colours and makes it dry very hard especially towels.

In hot temperatures it is fine to leave overnight imo
