To think we are being sized up by burgalers?

Have just moved to new house 6 days ago. Went out to take bin bags out and found our wheelie bin open, all bags ripped apart with our empty boxes from blackberry phones and iPods and DVD players on top, I know they were among the first things to be chucked into the bin so they should be sat on the top out of bags!

Aibu to think burgalers are having a nose to see if we Are worth their time? It is a notorious neighbouhood for burgaleries, I just feel really weird about it! Wwyd?

I would be installing cameras and state of the art alarms!!!

Hassled · 08/07/2010 21:14

Talk to your local Community Police person - they'll come and check you out re home security and give you some tips.

Dinkytinky · 08/07/2010 21:18

I'm thinking of emptying rotten fish fingers and cat shit over everything, then vomitting on it.
Also found my next door neighbours bank statements scattered everywhere, plus delivery orders etc! Bastards.

you're right to be feeling wierded out. call the local police and ask their advice.

DrivenToDistraction · 08/07/2010 21:24

But why on earth did you put the boxes in the bin in the first place .

Dinkytinky · 08/07/2010 21:30

Where else do you put boxes? All out recycling and bins go out the same way?

If I had no other bin option than putting them in a bin outside my house then I'd make damn sure they were unrecognisable. Maybe wet and mash them or something.

TBH IRL I'd probably just burn them in your situation, in a metal bucket in the garden if needs be.

Dinkytinky · 08/07/2010 21:43

Thanks driven- I knew that people looked for bank statements etc but had never thought if concealing what we own/boxes ?!? I bloody hate livingnlike this

Not very nice for you! speak to police they will give you tips etc on how to stay safe. Can you speak to neighbours and get a feel for if this has happened before ?

When we hadn't been here for long our weelie bin was tipped and emptied. Nothing sinister just bored kids. But the boxes on the top- i would be worried.

frecklyspeckly · 08/07/2010 22:14

sorry jusy re - read what u said about it being notorious for burgalry.

Alambil · 09/07/2010 00:42

I saw something on telly the other day that said remove all stickers and identifiable stuff off boxes so the burglars don't know which house has just bought x, y or z... but if it's in your bin, that'll be harder (this was talking about flats communal bins)

sunnydelight · 09/07/2010 00:51

We were burgled last year and it was all electronics/computer stuff stolen so I'm a bit paranoid about boxes. All the boxes from the stuff we replaced are in the (locked) shed or I'd have put them in the attic but NEVER in the bin or recycling as that's like saying "look what we have".

If you know your area is notorious do something now, not after the fact. Dog or alarm - one or the other.

LittleMissHissyFit · 09/07/2010 08:19

it's true, never put boxes for stuff like that in the rubbish. It's fundamental way of attracting burglars. Hide it in the loft, or make sure there are no delivery details and take it to the council dump.

The danger time is when you are moving. Gives anyone watching a chance to see what you have.

Secondly when you buy anything through leaving boxes out, and thirdly, when you've been burgled already, right afterwards, when the insurance has replaced everything.

Speak to your police officers, alert then to this clear casing of your home.

bumpsnowjustplump · 09/07/2010 08:29

Dinky I would never have thought of that either. I put all our boxes in the recycling, I shred all paperwork but the empty boxes just go in the green bin. I will make sure they are burnt from now on though... eak

I second what everyone has said and think you need to call the police and report what has happened and also get an alarm...

sowhatis · 09/07/2010 08:29

id def ask for community PO to come round. id also think about alarm or bloody big dog!
