Bang out of order to be planning on changing the law on redundancy packages and striking rules, just so they can force through their new cuts.

Labour tried to do it the right way, by getting the Unions to agree, and they didn't. So the Conservaties think Fuck you we will simply do it the underhanded way.

Just like reducing the tax credits to £23k a year despite telling us 40k.

regret my Tory vote now....

Democracy...... What Democracy Mr Cameroon. Goverment loses in court, so you change the law instead.

You Sir quite frankly Stink!

Bonuses are paid to some private sector employees. Once or twice a year, often linked to how the company has performed. So in one of my jobs I got a christmas bonus (about £100) and then a bonus in april (about £300).

Vouchers for random stuff and subsidised travel are some of the things that some public secctor employees get as perks. DH gets vouchers for random stuff but i don't want to say what as I've probably already said enough about his jobs We both get free oyster cards though, so that's a £3K a year perk before you've even looked at anything else.

drloves · 05/07/2010 12:48

Ha ! dont get me started on self employed !
Most people who are self employed , do so properly , they file the taxes correctly ...but there are a few who dont .
They hide money , disolve companies so they dont need to declare everything..then set up again under a new name.
A friends ex did this so he could avoid CSA payments , and keep his daughter in poverty . Nice chap.
There must be a way to stop this. Fine unscrupilous accountants would be a start ( that would sort out my ex too ).
That would help with child poverty and the tax system a bit imo.

ImSoNotTelling · 05/07/2010 12:49

Oh oyster cards are what you need to travel in london - I mean we both get a free pan-london travelcard with his work.

ImSoNotTelling · 05/07/2010 12:53

I mean, obviously some public sector people work hard and are paid shite, and some private sector people do very nicely thank you.

But for the lower end/middle people there is a disparity IMO. Private sector should look after their staff better and the more eye-poppingly generous bits of the public sector should be cancelled. Even it all out, meet somewhere in the middle that is fair and reasonable and affordable.

williewalshsballs · 05/07/2010 12:53

i'm still here
drloves. the perks, vouchers, subsidised travel, insurance etc are cheaper for employers than paying increased wages.. Perks are purchased by organisations in bulk therefore at favourable rates.

Wonderstuff · 05/07/2010 12:55

I think we need to increase the rate of inheritance tax and reduce the ways of avoiding it. We also need to increase tax on earnings over £150K. I think the changes to capital gains and corporation tax are good. The power of and reliance on the stock market is another thing and I have no idea how we can start to address that.

I'm surprised at that about self-employed ImSoNotTelling bil has his own business and tells me he has no way of avoiding paying any tax.

drloves · 05/07/2010 12:57

feck , why dont they just pay decent wages and be done with all the crapola?....oh hang on its cheaper for the employer !

Mumcentreplus · 05/07/2010 12:58

this is not about improving salaries or benefits for everyone is it?..I too want fair salaries and benefits for all..I pay into a pension just not as much and I would willingly pay more...but I'm not willing to have my benefits eroded on the basis that other people choose not to pay into a pension at all...my DH works in the private sector he pays into his works pension...

I think everyone if they paid into something should have a guaranteed pension and a decent wage...but hey thats way too socialist..

drloves · 05/07/2010 13:00

So the issue thats underlying it all is greed? The greed of the rich , is put before the need of the un-rich .(dont want to say poor, because im talking about the norman working person).
How can you cure greed? By giving them more?
Can someone tell the tories its no working? [

drloves · 05/07/2010 13:01

the norman ?
pmsl normal !

williewalshsballs · 05/07/2010 13:02

well, it's not just employer benefiting. take oyster card.

Employer can afford to increase employee salary by £1000. But instead buys £1000 for a year's worth of travel valued at £1500. This perk is worth £1,500 to employee as they would have had to spend that much in travel anyway.

Would you rather have got £1000 pay increase and had to fork out £1500 for travel or would you prefer bthe perk?

win win imo

drloves · 05/07/2010 13:03

mumcentreplus i agree , if you pay in ,you should get out, thats only fair imo!

Mumcentreplus · 05/07/2010 13:12

I say we give everyone in the country 1 million pounds...its in the bank and we are only allowed to live off the interest..cannot be withdrawn..I could quite happily live on 3 grand a week...and it would only cost the government 62 million ..job done!

expatinscotland · 05/07/2010 13:17

Why the fuck did you vote Tory?

I can see people like Xenia and such voting that way.

But I can't for the life of me understand why working poor and middle income people may have voted for them.

Talk about a turkey voting for Xmas!

I can't believe anyone believe them!

Wonderstuff · 05/07/2010 13:19

That isn't how it works though is it - we don't pay in x known amount and get out x amount. We pay in so much and hope our pensions perform well and our employers don't take anything out of the pot, or get into difficulty and blow the whole lot leaving us with nothing. I know someone who paid in for 20 years to be left with nothing when his employer went into administration. My dh has moved jobs every couple of years so has had massive gaps between paying into pensions - latest statement said his forcast private pension was £26 a month! My gran invested her lump sum when she retired and now it is worth less than when she invested it. I pay into a final salary scheme - no idea when I'll be able to retire, I imagine the contributions I pay will go up significantly and the retirement age will also rise. At least I know I'll get something - wouldn't feel happy paying the same amount into a private scheme. We need to improve the pensions for people working in private sector, pensioner poverty for my generation is going to be awful - might save the NHS a few bob when we are all forced to work longer and die younger.

If someone gave me a million pounds I'd be out of here so fast there'd be nothing but circles of dust in our wake.

Wonderstuff · 05/07/2010 13:22

But expat what was the alternative - what were labour going to do that was any better? They deregulated the banks, sold the assets to the lowest bidder and still did nothing to address the gap between the rich and poor.

Wonderstuff · 05/07/2010 13:23

Lovely idea mummycentreplus a few more than 62 people living in the UK though.

expatinscotland · 05/07/2010 13:25

Gees, Wonderstuff, they would probably have looked at cutting managers and their salaries before shafting the working poor, disabled and vulnerable.

Mumcentreplus · 05/07/2010 13:27

Yeah well maths aint my strong point!!

moomaa · 05/07/2010 13:27

I wish news/people would be clear what they are talking about, DH works for a council who give statutary minimum for redundancy and no more, this is the civil service only that we are talking about that have these stupid over generous rules.

I think all government employees should only get the minimum, if that's not enough then the minimum should be raised shouldn't it, otherwise, why have a minimum?

drloves · 05/07/2010 13:27

fecking hell a million quid each ? or each family? .
How would that be for immigrants and students?
would that not make money worthless , if everyone had a million , then it would force the cost of stuff sky high on the basis people could afford it .
What would be the lifetime cost of keepin someone perminatley on benefits? would giving them a million be cheaper in the long run?.
might well do....
