to resent having to pay for a hire car on holiday because dh's step bro has decided to tag along?

Dh's parents live in Spain. This year for our summer hol we are staying with them for a week. Money is tight, and we appreciate their hospitality gladly, as otherwise could not afford a foreign holiday.

FIL has a 5 setaer car out there, so perfect for MIL, FIL, DH, me and our 8 year old ds.

Anyway, yesterday, MIL (dh's step mum) tells us her son has decided to come out the same week. When I mention there will be no room in the car, she says 'oh ds can sit on someones lap'

The location of their villa means we need to travel in the car daily, even to get to the beach.

Of course, we will not allow ds to trevel like this so seems we have to get a hire car, but have looked and this will cost us approx £200, a huge chunk of our spending money......

I feel a little Grrrrr. But can't say anything as we get a free holiday.

go a different week? Is it too late to change?

Go halves on the hire car?

Don't all travel in the car at the same time? maybe do things on your own?

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 03/07/2010 21:38

I wouldn't go ahead yet and book a hire car - Step bro might not want to be with you all the time so might not be needed - or he could hire himself a little scooter jobbo. How old is he?

bluecardi · 03/07/2010 21:40

will you be going out at the sametime?

OrmRenewed · 03/07/2010 21:40

Blimey how mean. So your DH's step-brother can't have a holiday because it puts you out?

ib · 03/07/2010 21:41

Sorry but YABU. Why should your MIL not have her son there so you can save some money? You are sounding really ungrateful tbh.

bluecardi · 03/07/2010 21:47

could you have a word with your bil?

compo · 03/07/2010 21:50

Yabu
he probably just wants to see you and the kids

Wouldn't bother me, after all you are having a free holiday....DH's step brother could contribute if it really puts you out.

GypsyMoth · 03/07/2010 21:54

had you already agreed daily use of their car?

mumeeee · 04/07/2010 00:18

YABU, Your step brother hasn't decided to tag along he is going to se his Mum, which just happens to be the same week that you are going.

booyhoo · 04/07/2010 00:21

you wont all be in the car at the same time.

Quattrocento · 04/07/2010 00:38

think you're getting this out of proportion Dr No. No need to hire a car unless you want to for a day or so.

Starbuck999 · 04/07/2010 01:39

So everytime you go out it will be you and your DH both his parents and his brother? Sounds a bit strange to me.

Surely if you're all going to be using the hire car then you can chat to your BIL and go halves on the car? Perhaps he will say what we have all said and agree you wont all be going out at the same time each day.

Or, think of it as £200 spent for a nice holiday in Spain, at least you got a free place to stay. Bet you could get a little hire car for less than £200, shop around online.
