I am English. DP is Scottish. He loves to take the piss out of the English sports teams. As you can imagine it's been good fodder the last couple of days.

Anyway. He works away. My Mum works in a shop. She came round with a freebie ball for DD. It is an England ball, but it was free. DD likes it, she plays with it. No big deal. I'm not a massive football fan (anymore) so it doesn't matter what's on the flipping ball, but I knew it wouldn't escape a comment from DP when he got back tonight.

What I didn't expect was for him to say "I actually find that offensive" and chuck it out of the back door. Yes, it may be an England ball but it was a bloody present from my Mum! I don't say anything when his folks bring DD kilts, books about Scotland, Loch Ness toys....

So, it's ok for them to encourage the Scottish heritage side of things, but when it comes down to England it's "offensive"?

He's stormed out now for fresh air. Apparently I over-reacted when I went to get the ball back. I thought I was just standing up for myself. Ah well. First night back and it's gone tits up over a stupid ball.

Well maybe racist is not the correct term but its not exaclty mature and healthy is it.

PortiaNovmerriment · 03/07/2010 00:32

He sounds like a twat. My (Scottish) ex was just like this. I would have to endure hours of him dragging me round his tedious childhood haunts in the arse-end of nowhere, but he showed zero interest in where I grew up. He constantly acted like he was somehow more 'authentic' because of his roots, and had a chip on his shoulder which could have happily hosted a few fillets of fish.

It pissed me right off. I am no tub-thumping patriot by any means, but he acted like an accident of birth made him more worthy or real, and acted as though I was part of some oppressor class, so him arguing with me was part of a heroic resistance tradition or something. He was just a prick, tbh.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 03/07/2010 00:35

Racist is not the right term. And how often do we see threads here about MILs giving inappropriate presents? Why is it different when it's a man on the receiving end?

PortiaNovmerriment · 03/07/2010 00:38

What's inappropriate about it though? Btw, I would never purposely buy anything with an England flag/Union Jack on it, because I find it all a bit tacky- but I would be upset if my partner just chucked out a present from my mum.

verytellytubby · 03/07/2010 00:39

I've put up for weeks with my long distant Scottish cousins crowing on FB about our defeats which I find quite funny. I would genuinely support the Scots if they were in the World Cup and we were out.

On the other hand I couldn't give a flying fuck about Murray because he's a surly unattractive miserable git and I wanted Nadal to win. Nothing to do with the fact he's Scottish.

verytellytubby · 03/07/2010 00:40

And for fucks sake your DP needs to lighten up. It's a football. Grow up.

verytellytubby · 03/07/2010 00:43

Sorry bit drunk but I'd be livid too (logging out of mumsnet, facebook, twitter, everywhere I'm ranting)...

PortiaNovmerriment · 03/07/2010 00:47

I felt genuinely upset about Ghana being unjustly knocked out tonight, and I didn't even bother watching England's last match, never mind feel arsed that they lost- but the way the OP's partner is acting is just juvenile and boorish.

verytellytubby · 03/07/2010 00:49

Portia I shed a tear for Ghana but not for our overpaid useless side.

Mumcentreplus · 03/07/2010 00:52

Me too (about Ghana)portia.....

OP you DP is acting like a prat tbh..would he be offended if it was any other flag?..sounds like a right baby
