I need that abbreviation dictionary up there ^ open almost every time I read a post so that I can understand who or what the hell anyone is talking about

You soon get used to it

mummytime · 02/07/2010 13:20

Don't become a teacher!

MitchyInge · 02/07/2010 13:27

yanbu to find it scary but abbreviations have been around verbally and in writing for bloody ages

I love yabu and yanbu but have never ever been able to stomach the twee dh, dd etc type ones or 'lol' but majority of people can bring themselves to use them or prefer them so it's just the way of the internet

PrettyCandles · 02/07/2010 13:30

YABU

Just as long as it doesn't degrade into txtspk!

MitchyInge · 02/07/2010 13:34

it is so closely allied to txtspk as to be practically synonymous

sheenbeen · 02/07/2010 13:47

ahh well Mitchy, there you go, I cannot stand text speak so that's probably affecting my judgement of the abbreviations.

I have to be honest though and say I'd much rather just type the whole word out....although I do agree that yabu and yanbu is far easier. All that Dh, DS DC stuff is seriously vomit inducing though

I notice it mainly on relationship threads with all these people diagnosing their family and partners as EA, NPD, TP etc.

FFs (sorry!) they're just unpleasant people, and unless you're a qualified psychiatrist, don't label them as anything else!

Iklboo · 02/07/2010 14:03

My job is full of acronyms & abbreviations. We have conversations that sound like we're a bunch of spies!

Butterbur · 02/07/2010 14:07

I don't get the updiffed PESH and BESH lot, who seem to have their own private language. These abbreviations don't feature on the very limited site accronyms page.

toccatanfudge · 02/07/2010 14:07

mumble - why do you need to be a psychiatrist to recognise an EA partner??

BoysAreLikeDogs · 02/07/2010 14:13

wtf is PESH and DESH please

MitchyInge · 02/07/2010 14:42

wtf are EA and TP partners?

let's have a stab and PESH and DESH

although am getting no further than hoping p stands for poo

mumblechum · 02/07/2010 14:44

TP=Toxic Parents
EA=Emotional Abuse.
GL=Gaslighting

Ok so maybe you don't need to be a psychiatrist to diagnose all the abbreviations which people use, but NPD (Narcissistic Personality Disorder) is a clinical diagnosis.

MitchyInge · 02/07/2010 14:45

no it's not

is coming out of new diagnostic and statistical manual

has not really been a clinical diagnosis for aaaaaages

MitchyInge · 02/07/2010 14:47

(sorry, making self laugh but very nearly posted 'so yah boo sucks to you'. will go and seek some sort of help, like a coffee or a sedative or both)

mumblechum · 02/07/2010 14:48

It's ok Mitchy, I get the message

diamondsandtiaras · 02/07/2010 15:45

YABU IMO OP

mumblechum · 02/07/2010 16:42

SSTIYPASI

mumblechum · 02/07/2010 16:42

SO STICK THAT IN YOUR PIPE AND SMOKE IT

McSnail · 02/07/2010 17:16

YANBU ;P

I can't bring myself to use them and will always say daughter, partner etc instead of the usual acronym.
