To think that people who HAVE to drive in bare feet are a bit odd?

Why? They didn't learn or pass their test in bare feet did they?

I don't really care what other people do, to be honest, but I went on a trip with some colleagues yesterday, and the woman driving made such a bloody fuss about taking her shoes off 'ooh I sinply can't drive with shoes on, I have to have bare feet to feel the pedals with'

Just made her look daft.

Agree thumb - those marks on the pedals feel quite painful on bare feet, imo.

I always drive barefoot. Mind you the back seat of my car looks like a shoe shop as I usually run out of the house barefoot and grab a pair of shoes to put on when I get to work.

I also walk around the house baefoot or in ugg boots if it's really cold.

Don't know how I posted twice.

Actully someone told me once that it is illegal to drive barefoot. Don't know if this is true.

I have never bothered to find out as I don't like doing anything illegal and until I know definitely one way or the other I will continue to drive the way I always have

mayorquimby · 02/07/2010 09:51

it's a sign of madness. at a low point in my life I once drove a Vauxhall Vectra to Dundee in my bare feet whilst gorging on Toblerones.

FakePlasticTrees · 02/07/2010 09:53

I thought it was illegal to drive barefoot - something about not having full control of the car...

thumbwitch · 02/07/2010 09:56

It isn't actually illegal but it is a common belief that it is (I thought so too but googled beforehand to check). But you can still be done if you have an accident.

BigBadMummy · 02/07/2010 09:56

It's illegal isnt it?

BallpointPen · 02/07/2010 09:57

Throughout the summer I usually drive with bare feet because I'm usually in flip flops or birkies and they flip about, slip off and get stuck under the pedals if worn when driving. I don't have to drive barefoot, in the winter I am properly shod.

Do I fall into the category of 'odd'?

I found this on Yahoo answers. I thought it was illegal, but apparently not. But if you are in an accident you are very likely to get done for not being in control of the car, because you can't brake strongly enough in bare feet.

Driving in bare feet means that you can feel the car better and normally you don't waste as much fuel, that obviously depends on the driver if there heavy on the accelerator not wearing shoes isn't going to make a difference. However I agree that people that HAVE to drive bare foot are weird.

jazzandh · 02/07/2010 10:20

DH drives barefoot (habit that I have now picked up) - he has huge feet and used to drive original Minis - so much easier than with big feet flapping around. he got stopped once, and got out with just his socks on....

Policeman told him off...but he only got points for speeding!

doodledrawers · 02/07/2010 10:20

It is illegal in Canada!

TheBossofMe · 02/07/2010 10:28

I wear a lot of very expensive and lovely high heeled shoes that I wouldn't want to drive in (and it would be pretty unsafe to do so), But that's what Tods are for - car shoes with little bits on the rear to stop normal shoes getting scuffed.

Debs75 · 02/07/2010 11:21

I do know it is illegal to drive with a pot on. I was told it was a pot on any limb but not sure. I can see if it was a pot on the leg then your ankle and knee movements would be restricted, so braking suddenly would be hareder. On your arm it would depend if it was you gear hand or not.
Thinking now I agree with it being any limb, when I ripped my hand open I couldn't steer for a couple of weeks and had to resort to buses.

I have a couple of pairs of shoes which are too slippy for the pedals so i usually take them off if it gets too bad.

Love wearing trainers but you end up wearing down the right heel

I think the theory is that if you drive barefoot, go to brake, and there is something painful on the floor of your car, you will instinctively flinch your foot away from the pain.

TheChicOfIt · 02/07/2010 11:29

FioFio, I was more visualising a cooking pot

I have always driven barefoot but then I tend to run around without shoes most of the time anyway. If I do happen to have shoes on when I get in the car then I will always slip them off to drive, even in winter - DH used to think I was mad but is now just resigned to it .

Poledra · 02/07/2010 11:41

Debs is clearly northern - a pot is a plaster cast.

Songbiirdheartsfootball · 02/07/2010 11:43

I drive barefoot and don't think I'm at all weird. I obviously learnt to drive in shoes but when I started driving my husband's mpv in Sheffield I kept stalling the car on the hills and started to get wound up because I couldn't feel the biting point, and the engine's so quiet I couldn't hear it. His car is uber sensitive and stalls extremely easily. I'm also not the only one who thinks so that specific make of car is notorious for it. My friend who was sat next to me simply said, take your shoes off. I did and found it so much easier I stuck with it.

I'm not saying I'll do it forever but for now it's fine and I'm comfortable. I'm not a dangerous driver either, I manage motorways fine, the snake pass and I have done an emergency stop and managed to get my feet all the way down on the brake quickly so not sure what all that's about.
