to wear a nightie as a dress?

it doesn't really look like a nightie. It's black, quite high straight neck with broderie anglaise border thing and straps. It's about 4 inches above knees and quite baggy. It looks like any other black cotton dress but it is technically a nightie. I'm wearing it with a belt and lots of jewellery. Can't quite shake off the thought that everyone knows it's a nightie...

it'll be fine, most maxi dresses look like a nightie anyway

TartyMcFarty · 29/06/2010 14:19

Pic? I was tempted to wear my PJs to the cinema once but DH wasn't having any of it

littleducks · 29/06/2010 14:19

we will need a picture!

did you ever see the friends episode where rachel goes to dinner with boyf parents in her nightie?

mousymouse · 29/06/2010 14:21

if it looks nice, why not?
I wear a button down nightie as a long shirt with jeans.

SandyBits · 29/06/2010 14:21

Sods law says you bump into someone who has it and wears it as an actual nightie. I met a friend for the first time when she was wearing fleecy trousers I knew were pjs

SloanyPony · 29/06/2010 14:21

Do it! And go to Tesco in Wales and do a shop.

I've been the chemist in my pyjamas during a particularly bad flu bout. I dressed my baby girl in some nighties as daywear that were just not obviously nighties and nobody knew.

MayorNaze · 29/06/2010 14:21

are you wendy james from transvision vamp???

i would think it is fine tbh

Snobear4000 · 29/06/2010 14:22

That's so 1992.

Do it.

Salbysea · 29/06/2010 14:23

I saw someone wearing a strappy sundress style above knee nightie out as a dress the other day and I thought "she's wearing a nightie"

ShinyAndNew · 29/06/2010 14:25

Put it on. Go to the local supermarket for milk. Come back and check MN if you don't see a thread saying "OMG I saw a woman in the supermarket in her nightie and it's past midday and she had dressed it with jewellery and everything" then your fine

I did try to find a picture but it's old! I bought it a couple of years ago as a nightie, but to be frank if I'm not wearing a bra it makes my boobs look rubbish due to broderie anglaise border squishing them downwards in an unflattering fashion. It's only recently I looked at it and thought 'hmm'.

we dont want 'a picture' we waant a pic of you in the nighty/dress

secunda · 29/06/2010 15:50

I don't know how to do that. I don't even have a digital camera [troglodyte emoticon]

SandyBits, that's what I thought. Sod it, it's hot out and that means all normal rules are suspended

I say do it - i have a vest top that was bought from La Senza, as a short pj set. You wouldn't know it was anything other than a vest top and i have regularly worn it for going out (pub) in and no one has commented other than to say 'i like that top' (genuinely)

ExitPursuedByABear · 29/06/2010 17:06

Doesn't anyone remember the C&A nighties that we all wore as dresses in about 1972? They had a ruched white top and shoe string straps and a floral full length skirt - very similar to all the maxi dresses floating around at the moment. Go for it.
