..or are convertable car drivers slightly ridiculous?

I mean, what is wrong with air conditioning or windows? Ok air con. is not great for fuel economy (so bad for the environment)but windows and sun roof are adequate surely? Don't you get terribly sunburnt and tangled hair? Particuarly, if I see a man driving one, I can't but find the word 'knob' in my mind. It isn't conscious, it just appears.

i loved my MX5. Seriously loved it. When the DCs came along, I almost sold them and not the car.

jesuswhatnext · 28/06/2010 16:54

my old dad has a classic convertable, he spent years having sensible cars when us kids were needing to be transported, still has a 4x4 for taking out the dgcs, but he loves his classic car, worked hard for it, looks after it like a member of the family and would'nt give a tuppenny tit at being callled a knob him and mum drive along looking like old filmstars, very glam, all silk scarves and dark glasses and wicker picnic hampers

haoshiji · 28/06/2010 16:54

I know a few people with convertibles, mostly woman at work having a mid life crisis in leather trousers.

A friend of mine did have a poor man?s bmw for a while and she liked it but her DH couldn't drive it, he said it was like sitting in a coffin with a large set of scales at the front.

You know you can't take your driving test in a mini convertible due to the lack of vision out the rear window? Odd.

oldernowiser · 28/06/2010 16:59

I must get leather trousers to go with my ageing rock star hair! I'm menopausal, not having a mid life crisis. For all those of you using menopausal so lightly, remember that it will happen to you too!!!!

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 28/06/2010 17:04

Divatheshopaholic - NO. The rule is not that you have the top down when it's sunny, it's that you have the top down whenever it is not actually raining.

overmydeadbody · 28/06/2010 17:46

Yep I agree, top only goes up if it's actually raiining.

I do think classic and old convertible cars look much nicer than new ones, but I know that is just my opinion.

I do find myself stereotyping people by what car they have chosen, whether it is a soft-top or not

Divatheshopaholic · 28/06/2010 17:49

Thecoalition,i agree. Thanks.
We once had mg midget and drove in fleeces and caps with top down. Im talking about before children

I really don't like them but each to their own.

I would never date a man who drove one though - they are always so pretentious and "look at me" - probably just the twats I have met though

2rebecca · 28/06/2010 18:57

No, I would love a convertible. Sadly not practical as I live in Scotland and don't want more than 1 car, plus I often need to carry bikes etc in it.
Still think the bit in the Ballad of Lucy Jordon "At the age of 37 she realised she'd never ride through Paris in a sports car with the warm wind in her hair" is very evocative though.

Tidey · 28/06/2010 19:09

When I see men of a certain age driving them, I imagine that the Pat Mustard music from Father Ted is playing in their head and they are thinking 'I am the Most Handsome Man in the World'.

Rejessta · 28/06/2010 19:24

Surely it depends on the convertible. A vintage MG with wire-spoke wheels, for example, is unquestionably brilliant. You can make a case for an MX-5, too, but a Lexus, Beemer, Audi or one of those stupid Peugeot thingies with back seats but no leg room undeniably suggest that the owner is trying to compensate for something. Buying a topless Vauxhall is also quite sad, as if you would really want to be seen in one. It's definitely a Milwall car: nobody likes the owner and they're trying to pretend that they don't care. Topless Ferraris, Porsches and the like are worse still as you have just spent 100 grand and up on a performance car and then sabotaged its handling, publicly admitting that you only bought your car to be seen in it as if the unwashed mob will be brought to their knees in mindless adulation by your shameless expression of wealth.

UnseenAcademicalMum · 28/06/2010 19:44

I used to drive a Fiat Barchetta, actually almost identical to the one in the link. Then the dc's came along and the car had to go. I loved that car.

harpsichordcarrier · 28/06/2010 19:51

[[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:MG-F.jpg I had one of these}}
Then I had a green one.
Then I had children

I loved it and had the top down ALL the time.

harpsichordcarrier · 28/06/2010 19:51

then again I am slightly ridiculous

ItsAllTurnedToShit · 28/06/2010 19:55

OK, I appreciate all the points being made for them, I really do. And if ridiculousness is your thing then thats great. Truly.

I love my MX5, I'm on to my second one and the roof has been down a few times recently. The old one was freezing even in the hottest weather so the roof was hardly ever off.

Ambi · 28/06/2010 19:58

Like Harpsichord, I had a beautiful black MX5, fab in the summer - don't know how it'd coped with the snow this year though.

Had to sell when I got pregnant . I started to look ridiculous at 6 months and struggling to get in and out!!

organiccarrotcake · 28/06/2010 20:20

melika actually, generally they're really safe (modern ones). Ours is a Volvo. Clearly not an unsafe car (has magic roll bars which pop up if the car rolls). Clearly also not a flashy car, coz we're not into flashy. But driving with the roof down is comfortable, fun and feels wonderful in the sunshine. My DS loves it (sitting in the back) - he always asks for it to be down if it's not raining. There loads of room in the back AND the boot. I couldn't give two hoots what it looks like to anyone else. I'll say again - it's a frigging Volvo - who in their right minds would choose one of those for the image? I don't judge people for their cars and I don't care if people judge me for mine, because we have it for our own pleasure and not for what anyone else may think.

Imisssleeping · 28/06/2010 22:24

The only time I used to really look forward to driving was when I had a convertible. They are great fun, but i didn't 'get it' till I drove one.
What really annoys me now is people in convertibles, on a sunny day, driving with the roof up !!!!!They are the tossers !

101damnations · 29/06/2010 22:21

dh has one and only ever has the roof up if it is raining, and we live in the countryside so no sitting in traffic jams.My dad has a spitfire which is great fun too.

I have the boring staid car of the family-a Mondeo, which is worth virtually nothing now.In comparison.dh's car has a higher resale value than when he bought it and the garage he uses often write asking if he's interested in selling it as they have buyers waiting.

I love my MX 5 and I really don’t give a fuck about what other people think 🙂

I love it when an ancient thread pops up in my ‘Threads I’m On’ page - I get to see what I thought about some random topic more than a decade ago….
