..or are convertable car drivers slightly ridiculous?

I mean, what is wrong with air conditioning or windows? Ok air con. is not great for fuel economy (so bad for the environment)but windows and sun roof are adequate surely? Don't you get terribly sunburnt and tangled hair? Particuarly, if I see a man driving one, I can't but find the word 'knob' in my mind. It isn't conscious, it just appears.

I have a mini convertible.
I only ever drive a few miles in any direction and it is nice to be able to put the roof down if I want to.

I would rather be sitting with my very happy Dcs enjoying the roof down on the way home from school than be the kind of uptight twat person who worries more about their hairstyle.

melikalikimaka · 28/06/2010 15:07

If one of those flipped over, you wouldn't have a prayer. Also the noise level in the car is really irritating when the hood is up. If I had one it would have to be a prestige car, not a silly mazda type. I always think 'show off' when I see them.

GetOrfMoiLand · 28/06/2010 15:09

before I drove one I did point and laugh and think 'twat' whenever I saw a convertible.

As long as it's not pink or yellow it's all right. And DP's you could drive round in the depths of winter - it has neck heater thingies and used to be lovely and warm.

Butterbur · 28/06/2010 15:09

Yep, aircon for me too. I can't imagine having the roof down does much for the fuel consumption either. Just think of all the extra turbulence.

FolornHope · 28/06/2010 15:09

istn gb the onyl place that realyl sells them in Yoorp?

pagwatch · 28/06/2010 15:12

One of which?

My mini has roll bars and is as safe as most other cars. And there isn't a lot of noise when the roof is up...

DD likes the roof down in all weathers. Nov with the roof down does look knobby but she whines ...

LadyBiscuit · 28/06/2010 15:14

My car was as quiet as other cars when the roof was up. When it was down you couldn't really hear anyone but that's no bad thing. And teenagers think they're ace - I used to get compliments from youths

I don't do hairstyles anyway

It's 30c outside and you are moaning about people who have roofless cars... me thinks you be having a visit from the green eyed monster.

Motorbikes/scooters and some boats have no roofs on you going to moan about them to?.

whats the difference between driving a convertable and just walking around in the sun? do you think people should stay indoors when it's sunny and hot?.

I don't own a car I can't even drive BTW.

I flippen love my convertible and I don't care if anyone thinks it's sad to own one. I enjoy driving mine so much

GetOrfMoiLand · 28/06/2010 16:06

Never noticed any difference with the roof up - DP's was an SLk so was exactly the same as a hard top with the roof up.

Mine was a MGF and had a cloth roof, but never noticed the difference either. Drove it around in those awful snows this winter. The only reason I got rid was because it was a left hand drive and was skittish in the snow and put the fear of god in me.

Sassybeast · 28/06/2010 16:09

I am bloody gorgeous and that's why I have one

PuraVida · 28/06/2010 16:21

why would mazda have maufactured a virtually identical car continuously for about 20 year? because they're bloody brilliant! such good fun, don't knock it until you have tried it.

my back to work gift to myself was after maternity leave was a mx5. my ds loves sitting next to me with the wind in his hair and a quinny zap fits perfectly in the boot. it is eminently practical if you want it to be.

oh and OP YABU and silly

Rockbird · 28/06/2010 16:24

I'm not jealous Ryoko. As I said above, I much prefer to be in the shade rather than out with the sun blazing down on me so if I had a convertible the roof would be up all the time.

It is possible to dislike something without being jealous y'know.

5DollarShake · 28/06/2010 16:30

I think they're great and would love to have one, but not really practical right now.

My neighbour across the road has some swish black number, and she has been putting the roof down the minute she gets into it, what with all this great weather. She is 80-something, with very noticeable Parkinsons so must get some odd looks at the traffic lights, but bloody good on her, I say.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 28/06/2010 16:31

Topless rally, anyone?

oldernowiser · 28/06/2010 16:32

I am menopausal and the roof down is great for the hot flushes. What's wrong with looking like an ageing rock star?

saslou · 28/06/2010 16:37

Funnily enough my DH and I had a row about this the other day. I see them and think 'mid life crisis', but my DH says they are a brilliant driving experience (think he is paving the way for his own mid life crisis). I do see that they are probably fun to drive, but I just think about not being able to get the buggy in the boot (not to mention getting all the DC on the back seat). Fear I may be getting old

Grumpyoldcaaaaaaaa · 28/06/2010 16:40

Aw I was out in our Alfa Spider yesterday and loved it. The other car is a Passat Estate. I know which I'd rather drive on a beautiful sunny day. And I just tie my hair back. No Rod Stewart here

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 28/06/2010 16:41

They are fun. The end.

oldernowiser · 28/06/2010 16:41

My Mum also has a convertible (MX5) and she's in her 70s. They are fun! But our boring Zafira (air con is lovely) has to do all the sensible trips for everyone and is knackered

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 28/06/2010 16:42

saslou - being unable to transport more than one person at a time is a bonus. Really.

My MX5 is bloody amazing to drive. Twice recently I have taken her to the supermarket, decided the trip was too short and continued on to the next town. FWIW she is more fuel efficient than the dull old crappy hatchback I had before. But this is clearly outweighed in environmental terms by the additional gratuitous driving I've found myself doing...

Divatheshopaholic · 28/06/2010 16:43

They are great. Specially in Uk weather, where you dont often see sun. So why not have convertible car and drive open whenever sun is out and dry.

overmydeadbody · 28/06/2010 16:48

Eh?

OP, people who buy convertible cars don't buy them to keep cool in hot weather you know, they buy them because they like them.

YABU The world would be very boring if we all just baught and liked and used the same things.

Perhaps you are jealous?

Old classic convertibles are things of bauty.
