To think sticking your finger inside a baby's nappy is a disgusting habit?

This is how MIL checks the status of my baby's nappy. Surely a quick peek or a sniff is sufficient. She sticks her finger in and then says "ooooh mummy poor DD has a horrid nappy, poor darling" implying I haven't changed it for a day or two. Last time she did this I suggested she washed her hands. She's being vile isn't she?

Totally vile.

Tidey · 27/06/2010 12:25

Revolting. I find sniffing a nappy bad enough, even though I've done it myself. Weirdly I still find it horrible when I see others doing it. But sticking a finger into it to check is really nasty.

HalfTermHero · 27/06/2010 12:29

MIL is a filthy minger and I would tell her as much.

mamas12 · 27/06/2010 12:30

EEUUGH
Vile indeed.
When I had ds after I had a daughter I used to take a peek to see if there was anything in the nappy and would always for the first few weeks get caught out thinking oh yes there's something there, Oh no it's attached it was his scrotum of course.

nickschick · 27/06/2010 12:31

OMG send her to a nursery to work for a few weeks, that alone will stop her putting fingers in nappies.

compo · 27/06/2010 12:32

I think calling her a filthy minger is a bit ott

TheNextMrsDepp · 27/06/2010 12:34

I used the sniff test; I remember my little bro being totally horrified when I did this. Of course, forward-wind a few years (and two dds) and he's sniffing away himself. But not a finger - ew! You don't know what you'll find.

I hope when MIL does this you hand dd back to her and say "well, thanks for pointing it out. Her changing mat is over there...."

honeydragon · 27/06/2010 12:38

uurgh why? I get pulling the leg down to check by looking but why is she sticking her finger in it? You can tell a wet disposable nappy from the outside and cloth from the liner so no need to do it for wees either.

YANBU for thinking that MIL actions are vile.

5DollarShake · 27/06/2010 12:38

OM - you had to suggest she wash her hands afterwards??? Would she not have otherwise?

It's vile enough she does it, but that takes the cake.

Crikey - what's wrong with a peek or a sniff, if it's really not obvious?

HecateQueenOfWitches · 27/06/2010 12:56

A finger? Why? I mean..just... why? What can a finger tell you that your eyes and nose can't?

Does she just enjoy sticking her finger into dirty nappies?

CoinOperatedGirl · 27/06/2010 12:59

I must admit I have done this once or twice . In my defence though the baby was asleep in the cot and I couldn't get in for a good sniff, rather have a pooey finger than a needlessly awake baby

ReneRusso · 27/06/2010 13:00

I have no idea why. I know she did the same when Dh was a baby because she says so. Glad I'm not alone in thinking this is odd.

tw1nkley · 27/06/2010 13:03

Yep thats grim, but we work on the mothod here that she/he who finds it sorts it out

PLease point out to her that the scrubbing brush on the side of the sink is there for her sole benefit and to make sure that she scrubs under her nails

Tidey · 27/06/2010 13:07

I just really hope she doesn't then stick her finger into a baby's mouth to feel its gums or something afterwards. Boak.

violethill · 27/06/2010 13:11

Coin - Why on earth would you do it with a baby who is sound asleep? Would you then wake the baby up anyway if it's got a dirty nappy?!

JudgyVonCatsbum · 27/06/2010 13:19

Didn't someone get a monstrous flaming recently, violet for leaving a pooey baby asleep?

violethill · 27/06/2010 13:27

I don't remember that one!

Can't see why if it isn't bothering the baby at all!

FolornHope · 27/06/2010 13:27

vile

whoneedssleepanyway · 27/06/2010 13:34

absolutely vile. and am that she wouldn't have washed her hands without a reminder...

maybe it is just DD2 but the sniff test is never needed you can tell from a mile away the minute she has done one, and in any event DD1 who has a nose like a bloodhound will always tell me if i have missed it!

Greensleeves · 27/06/2010 13:35

my dh used to do this

I had to resort to violence in the end

CoupleofKooks · 27/06/2010 13:37

what so she will stick her finger in and bring it out covered in poo? then just sit there? what does she do with the poo on her finger? why would ANYONE want to put their finger into a nappy, to see if it comes out covered in poo?

5DollarShake · 27/06/2010 13:41

So, you've mentioned to her that it's vile, and not only does she not get that it's vile, but freely admits to doing it with your DH as well?

I also would like to know what she does with her finger afterwards if she doesn't wash it.

13lucky · 27/06/2010 13:41

Ha, ha, ha whoneedssleepanyway re dd1 - sounds exactly the same as my dd1 regarding ds2!!!

Khara · 27/06/2010 13:49

Yuk!

I have no sense of smell, so couldn't do the sniff test, but I would always sneek a peek in the nappy rather than stick my finger in.
