...you shouldnt be putting your washing in a tumble drier (every wash) and then complain that your skint...

Just seen my friend for a quick cuppa, and was amazed to see her load her tumble drier full and wack it on...

I mean, its like 26 degrees here glorious sun shine,

I asked why she didnt have a washing line, she laughed and said that shes not a washer woman and its just easier to bung it in the tumble.

However, later on, she started to tell me how her and her DP are getting a bank loan to help them pay off some debts and they are struggling a bit ...

Well, AIBU?

Lazy cow

YANBU

I agree. Am astonished that I am the only one putting washing out amongst all my neighbours. Can only think they all use the tumble dryer.

I know some people prefer the tumble dryer as it means clothes are less likely to need ironing and they also dont get bugs on them etc. Our electricity bill falls by about £100 during summer and most of that will be the tumble dryer.

mistressploppy · 25/06/2010 10:03

YANBU but only because she's moaning to you about money - if she wasn't then really it's none of your business.

Apart from the environmental aspect.........

PuppyMonkey · 25/06/2010 10:07

It's just as easy to hang the washing out on the line for an hour then put it away as put in tumble drier for an hour and put it away. Don't get the washer woman complaint at all. You still have to sort it, even if you put it in tumble drier. It doesn't get dealt with magically.

Is my view.

KarmaAngel · 25/06/2010 10:12

YANBU I hate putting my clothes in the drier, it softens and weakens the material. Is it sad that I love putting washing on the line? In the summer I have been known to go searching the house for something to wash when the wash basket is empty. Just to see it all on the line. I get this sense of satisfaction seeing it all blowing in the wind. And the smell when you bring it in is amazing. Ok I'll shut up now.

Actually that is the only housework I'm doing of course CBA hoovering etc.

TartyMcFarty · 25/06/2010 10:13

YANBU. Can;t believe the number of people both in RL and on here who say they never hang washing out. Tumble driers are one of the worst culprits in household CO2 emissions too.

Mingg · 25/06/2010 10:18

YANBU

Karma - I love the smell too!

In my block of flats we're not allowed to hang washing out. It's in the lease. I find it ridiculous, especially when we're all supposedly meant to be saving energy at the moment. I just dry stuff indoors, but use my tumble drier for sheets and towels.

OP, YANBU, if she has outdoor drying facilities it's just a bit lazy not to use them.

SlackSally · 25/06/2010 10:23

Well you'll never see washing hanging on my line, as I don't have one, living in a flat. We seem to permanently have clothes horses full of clothes cluttering the place up.

I'd bloody love a tumble dryer.

Flisspaps · 25/06/2010 10:24

YANBU - 'not a washerwoman'?

Karma - I've been doing the same. I think these cushion covers could do with a bit of a swill...

BMI That's bonkers! What crazy person would ban people from hanging washing out?

MarineIguana · 25/06/2010 10:24

Yes if you are lucky enough to have a garden or somewhere to hang washing it's madness not to. I enjoy it too and it is much nicer. I hate tumble dried clothes - ick.

BUT I have sometimes tumble dried muslins this summer when i just couldn't get the time to hang them out and needed them asap - my excuse is a new baby. But your friend's reason is rubbish "I'm not a washerwoman" yes you are. We all are (and I include men in that!), if we want clean clothes we have to wash them.

OnlyWantsOne · 25/06/2010 13:55

Ok, she has a large garden - with a relatively new (was a wedding present) rotary washing line (from JohnLewis dont you know)

...she has no excuse, she is being lazy

Whatl about people using dishwashers? Or washing machines for that matter?

Lazy bastards.

That makes her un-environmental (to invent a word), not a 'lazy cow'.

Well, after 4 years without a washing line, I finally got one of these and I LOVE hanging out my washing. It takes 2 minutes, the clothes smell wonderful and best of all - many things don't need ironing!! Can just lug them upstairs and hang them straight up! My ironing time has gone down from about 5 hrs a week to less than an hour!

Perhaps mention that to her?

Along with the fact that each tumble load costs about 50p!

Although saving what? a load a day? £3.50 a week? £182 a year. Not a lot, really. And not likely to make much difference on its own.

feedmenow · 25/06/2010 15:44

Washing dried on washing lines is no good for people with hayfever though (

MrsWobbleTheWaitress · 25/06/2010 15:48

YANBU

Dishwashers are different - they make less impact on the planet than washing up and changing the water as much as you should to be hygienic.

And washing machines save hundreds of hours of time you would otherwise have to spend doing laundry - two whole days you'd have to devote to it each week, and that was int he days when people only had one or two outfits! I expect they are more energy efficient than doing washing by hand too.

Hanging washing on the line takes 10-15mins. I think my washing needs more ironing if it's tumbledried as I never get to taking it out in time - at least I can leave stuff on the line until I am able to bring it in.

£182 a year is actually quite a lot, Hecate!

tethersend · 25/06/2010 15:52

"And washing machines save hundreds of hours of time you would otherwise have to spend doing laundry - two whole days you'd have to devote to it each week, and that was int he days when people only had one or two outfits!"

Yup. Lazy.

Why is it different? the OP didn't criticise her friend for damaging the environment, she criticised her for being a lazy cow for using a tumble drier.

I can only assume that she uses no labour-saving device whatsoever.

HecateQueenOfWitches · 25/06/2010 15:54

Yes, I just meant in terms of needing a bank loan! The woman wouldn't be saved from that by not using her tumble dryer. It wouldn't make a difference on its own.

flibbertigibbert · 25/06/2010 15:55

YANBU. Every time I see my mum she complains about the bills, yet she uses the tumble dryer constantly, leaves every appliance on standby and runs the dishwasher with only a few plates in

beanlet · 25/06/2010 15:58

Karma -- I love hanging my washing out too; it's one of my secret pleasures.

Along with (would you believe it) cleaning the toilet!

flibbertigibbert · 25/06/2010 16:00

Oh and I completely agree with everyone who loves hanging their washing outside. And I get excited at trying different fabric softeners .
