...you shouldnt be putting your washing in a tumble drier (every wash) and then complain that your skint...

Just seen my friend for a quick cuppa, and was amazed to see her load her tumble drier full and wack it on...

I mean, its like 26 degrees here glorious sun shine,

I asked why she didnt have a washing line, she laughed and said that shes not a washer woman and its just easier to bung it in the tumble.

However, later on, she started to tell me how her and her DP are getting a bank loan to help them pay off some debts and they are struggling a bit ...

Well, AIBU?

Well I do both at this time of year, so things like towels, jeans, linen clothes go on the washing line. T shirts, undies and socks go in the tumble dryer. I hate crispy undies and socks and lothe ironing - if I time it right I don't have to iron any t-shirts that have been inthe tumble dryer.

I know it's not environmentally good and I know it's going to cost more in electricity. I also know that if I have lots of ironing to do I get into a foul mood, so for the sake of the family and me I do as little as I can get away with.

toccatanfudge · 25/06/2010 16:02

I don't hang washing out, but I don't have a tumble drier either.

If any of you would like to come and put the spike in the ground for my washing line I would be eternally grateful

SloanyPony · 25/06/2010 16:03

"It's just as easy to hang the washing out on the line for an hour then put it away as put in tumble drier for an hour and put it away".

No its not. Particularly if you are talking lots of baby and toddler bits and pieces. The tumble dryer is both quicker and easier. This may well constitute laziness but its not "just as easy".

However, if she is skint, it is a place where she could economise, so for that reason YANBU

I use a tumble dryer for 4 loads a week - I have a garden and a clothes horse to hang it on (I hang my stuff on the airer but not dh's/dd's as they iron their own clothes and they come out of the dryer less creased)

I don't iron so I don't care that mines creased.

I've just bought an eco dishwasher too and am waiting to have it installed.

I have solid fuel (wood) heating though and don't fly so I'm guessing that our individual carbon emission as a family is pretty low.

I think people should have personal carbon allowances then I can spend mine on what the fuck I like - and I will 'spend' it on 4 tumble loads a week.

OnlyWantsOne · 25/06/2010 16:51

Actually, I think it does indicate that she's lazy.

If she can walk 2ft from the washer to the drier and switch it on and forget about it - then get it out when its done and take it upstairs and put away, that shows minimum effort.

I know when I hang out my washing on my line it takes me 10 minutes, and I keep an eye out on the weather to check there wont be a down pour, then in the evening I get it in, and fold it up, iron what has to be ironed then put it away,

therefore, I invest more time and in my washing - however, it probably costs me less in electric/

I dont have a dishwasher, or a dryer... thanks

I do have a dishwasher - and I'd be lost without it

belly36 · 25/06/2010 17:03

I've been sticking my washing in the dryer over the last couple of weeks, but then I have been recovering from a caesarean. Did put it out this week, sore tummy now so banned from using the washing line again. But the dryer makes the house even hotter on a hot day, I hate the damn thing (although quite like it again in the winter).

Mind you, I kid you not as soon as I hang my washing out, the next door neighbours will light their barbeque and my washing will end up smelling of smoked polish sausages.

RougetNoir · 25/06/2010 17:06

How lazy!!!

I was delighted this week with this great weather I was able to put a wash on the line before and after work/school runs each day. Seems silly not to take advantage of it !It's Friday and I am contemplating an empty laundry basket , joy! Now gotta get DH to put it away!!!

BitterAndTwistedChoreDodger · 25/06/2010 17:08

Well, I have my Tumble drier on right now.

Glorious sunny day, but I am on load number 6 of laundry today, have three loads in the garden, one load hanging in the house, one load in the drier and one in the washing machine - AIBU?

toccatanfudge · 25/06/2010 17:16

I need a MAN

diddl · 25/06/2010 17:24

SloanyPony-how does baby stuff being involved make hanging out harder?

I also don´t have a tumble dryer, & what I really hate is when I peg out, it rains, & I have to bring it in & put it up on the airer!

tethersend · 25/06/2010 17:27

My Grandma used to narrow her eyes at women in the street and whisper disdainfully "She's the kind of woman who leaves her pegs on the line" through pursed lips.

Is this thread the 21st century equivalent?

onepieceoflollipop · 25/06/2010 17:31

I have mixed feelings on this. I have been using the drier but only put stuff like t-shirts in for 10 minutes then shake and hang (removes the creases)

It does take ages to peg out small socks and pants etc. Sometimes even in this weather I drape them on the airer as quicker than pegging out.

My db (who is lazy) gave me a lecture recently on how "cheap" his tumble drier is. Basically he leaves all the housework/childcare to sil and with 2 small children she or he stuff it in the drier regardless of the weather.

I am very lazy in other areas. I give my family raw salads rather than cooked veg a lot of the time for example. We have only had one roast dinner this year.

However, I am not "lazy" with laundry.

I guess we all have our own standards.

Perhaps your friend spends hours doing other tasks that she feels are more worthy of her time. (she is probably making organic spaghetti from scratch as we speak!)

onepieceoflollipop · 25/06/2010 17:32

diddl takes ages pegging out tiny socks etc, especially if more than one child is involved.

Far quicker if the load is only 6 large towels or similar.

toccatanfudge · 25/06/2010 17:32

diddl - you don't bring it back in if it rains (unless it's something you desperately need to get dried) - you leave it out there until it dries

CheekyBigBrotherFan · 25/06/2010 17:34

i dont put my washing out on the line because of a fear of insects. I put them all on airers in the house and maybe in the garden in the nice weather. But towels and things like bedding i shove in the tumble.

squashimodo · 25/06/2010 17:34

I use the tumble drier because two of my dc has hayfever
YABU, and it is none of your business, what kind of friend are you?

nickelbabe · 25/06/2010 17:38

i can understand tumble friers in the winter, but in the summer when it's not raining they're insane.

in this heat, it would take less tiem to dry it on the line.

plus the drier will make the house hot, which is not a good thing in this heat.

i love the smell of the washing when it comes in from the line - it always smells slightly burned when it comes out of a drier (a bit like when you've just ironed it)

the only one i will accept is the hayfever one that squash said - but even then, i would hang the washing on a clothes horse inside rahter than waste the power.

YANBU

diddl · 25/06/2010 17:41

I didn´t find small socks any different to larger socks to peg out tbh.

Mind you, I used to love seeing baby stuff on the line[sob]

toccatanfudge-do you mean possibly overnight?

HousewifeOfOrangeCounty · 25/06/2010 17:42

Hello - what's all this lazy about? Do you get a medal for taking longer to do a chore that can be done quicker? I am not a martyr.

toccatanfudge · 25/06/2010 17:44

overnight - ermm, I think my record was 3 or 4 days

I WANT MY WASHING LINE PUT UP

I think I may need to kidnap my BF's DH over the weekend............or oooo I wonder if next door would do it for me - he's probably at a loose end at the moment as his wife and DS have gone off to Turkey for a month

Flisspaps · 25/06/2010 17:44

It doesn't take THAT long to hang out baby stuff...and I've got hayfever and still manage to line-dry stuff

AND I leave my pegs on the line

diddl · 25/06/2010 17:53

Perhaps that´s the trick Flisspaps-leaving the pegs on speeds the job up!
