Teaching assistant eating ice lolly

Am I being OTT to think it totally out of order for the teaching assistant to be sitting next to my daughter in after school club eating an ice lolly when the children had fruit and biscuits (this being a very hot day) !!

If she'd given lollies out there'd be parents blasting her for filling their kids up with e-numbers or some other such nonsense.

I'm surprised biscuits are even allowed after reading some of the ridiculous school healthy eating threads on here.

Is your DD even bothered?

Was she making a meal of it? (pardon the pun)

I mean, was she waving it on the kids' faces and saying 'Mmmmm. Look what I've got. I've got a lovely lolly. You haven't got a lovely lolly, you've only got skanky fruit. I bet you wish you had a lovely lolly.'

If so, kill her.

If not, lighten up a little.

cakeywakey · 24/06/2010 20:04

Now I want a lovely lolly!

violethill · 24/06/2010 20:04

ravenAK - agree with you about the coffee thing. I sometimes have a cup of tea while teaching, but I think that's fair enough, as I never take my 20 minute break (chance would be a fine thing!) and rarely take much lunch time. If anyone complained I'd just take my full 20 mins sitting in the staff room instead

I wouldn't eat while teaching as the students aren't allowed and I would feel its a little bad mannered. However, the OP's situation is different, as it wasn't a lesson, it was an out of school club and the kids were eating too.

huffythethreadslayer · 24/06/2010 20:06

Loves the image of the skanky fruit lady waving her lolly in the faces of the Dickensian children.

YABU....or as my DH just said, YABAK (you are being a K.... insert word of choice!~).

Sometimes I think people really need to lighten up a bit!!!

Adair · 24/06/2010 20:07

Well, no, you don't share your food with your dh because presumably he had the opportunity to get some too (though tbh if I am eating a biscuit, I'd prob say 'do you want one?'). Would you really just go ahead and eat dinner in front of your brother without offering him his own plate?

The point was the kids hadn't all brought their own things. They were eating the snack that had been provided. The TA could have eaten what was provided too or waited.

now MUSt leave this ridiculous thread alone

Morloth · 24/06/2010 20:08

I am one of 6 children. I don't share, not ever, not even with my own kids. Mine all mine.

Adair · 24/06/2010 20:08

(btw I don't think it's a massive big deal, certainly not worth complaining over, just a bit rude)

Adair · 24/06/2010 20:08

Bet your kids are lovely.

QualityTime · 24/06/2010 20:10

What a bitch.

lemonysweet · 24/06/2010 20:10

um, sorry, if she had been eating a delicious snickers bar in front of the kids, and she offered it round and a child with a nut allergy ate it you would be RAGING that shed offered stuff that hasnt been personally vetted by mummy around.
havnt we just had a thread where the OP was pissed off that grandad let his grandson have a sugary drink and 'went behind her back'?

not sharing your personal snack is not rude. for gods sake. if i had a bag of crisps in front of my colleagues, i MIGHT offer them round, but if i was hungry, i most likely wouldnt!

also, what if she has special dietary requirements and needed a sugar fix or something?

violethill · 24/06/2010 20:13

That's a good point lemony.

Or She might be pregnant and need to eat to stave off sickness. Actually I'll amend my last post - I did eat while teaching while pregnant, because nibbling ginger biscuits was the only thing that prevented me running out of the classroom and throwing up.

The TA would not be allowed to offer ice lollies all round if the school is under one of these healthy eating food for life campaigns. The TA was probably exhausted after a long, tiring and stressful day at work, when lets face it, on top of their job description its just a long day of "could you just take child A for 10 mins", "could you just break up that fight between chld B and C there" "could you just photocopy this paperwork and mark all the books in the classroom quickly" I really think that he or she deserves a damn ice lolly and you know that schools hand out fruit snacks and ensure the children get something to eat at lunch time when TAs are usually busy looking after SEN children, feeding them and then on playground duty.

OrmRenewed · 24/06/2010 20:20

An ice lolly?

Tis the slippery slope. Mark my words she'll be eating Vienetta next...

I should demand her instant dismissal.

Morloth · 24/06/2010 20:22

They are indeed and the big one knows not to touch Mummy's food.

OrmRenewed · 24/06/2010 20:22

Must I stop drinking wine at dinner time in case the DC get upset they can't have any?

Morloth · 24/06/2010 20:23

No you must share it with them Orm grown ups should never have anything that children cannot have in their presence.

mummyofexcitedprincesses · 24/06/2010 20:32

I think it is unprofessional. I wouldn't do it, it projects the wrong kind of image and is unfair on the children.

If she was working, she shouldn't have had it and if she wasn't working, she should have gone elsewhere to eat it.
