To think that very christian people often look different?

I don't mean this in an unpleasant way. I just find that sometimes when I meet people I think "you look like you are a deeply religious christian" and generally I am right, they do turn out to be. I don't think it works on less committed christians. Is this like having gaydar? Does anyone else have this experience? What is it I see in their appearance that makes me think this? Am I just kidding myself about this in some way?

DH's friend who is an IT worker always has a massive set of keys on a retractable chain thing with him at all times. Even at places like wedding receptions and posh restaurants. You are onto something with that, LeQ.

diplodoris · 25/06/2010 18:08

But parodying a group you're a member of yourself is different, isn't it?

SweetnessAndShite · 25/06/2010 18:55

Haven't read the full thread and I'm not a Christian myself but my Mum was and she always used to be able to tell another one without knowing. She reckoned she could just tell from their caring demeanor and she also used to talk about seeing Jesus lighting up their eyes... don't take the piss about that though coz she was in hospital dying of cancer and dosed up on morphine at the time.

I'm not targetting Christians - I bet I can spot a devout muslim or Jew from the way they dress too.........

seeker · 26/06/2010 16:37

And devout followers of Hare Krishna give out subtle clues by the way they dress too!

seeker · 26/06/2010 16:38

Can anyone else spot them, or am I jst sensitive?

NomNom · 26/06/2010 16:42

Muslims can often be identified by the headscarf Jews are a race and have certain identifiable facial features, so that covers that Christians have nice rosy cheeks, not sure why that is, do they spend a lot of time outdoors? or maybe it's the communion wine.

Very sweeping statements, of course, not to be taken seriously.

Fleecy · 26/06/2010 16:50

seeker you clearly have a talent!

I'm an evangelical Christian, wear JBrands and hang out on the S&B threads. SO not sure where I fit. There definitely is a type sometimes but I suppose you get that with any peer or demographic group?

Anyhoo, I'm never sure whether to be flattered or offended if someone is surprised by my faith. Is it good because I don't look like a stereotypical bad jeans, bad haircut Christian or is it bad because it doesn't come shining through?

Fleecy · 26/06/2010 16:51

I'd like rosy cheeks though - I'm not really an outdoors sort so maybe that's where I've been going wrong. Wine does make me flush though...

Oblomov
"and when i say godly. i mean REALLY REALLY godly , people that i know. like an inner softness and beauty that means they must believe in god / only god could give them. you know when you meet someone and they are so loving, so incredible beautiful inside. they always turn out to be christians. true i tell you."

I knwo what you mean by this one - our priest has this about her - the first time i saw it, i just had this huge urge to go up to her and say "god loves you", and i don't know why, because that kind of behaviour just really makes me want to vomit heavily.
but she just ooooozes it all the time - even when she's angry, she just shines.
very odd.

CarmenSanDiego · 26/06/2010 17:06

It's easy to spot them here - they go round in sweatshirts with bible verses on them.

I wonder if I'm particularly Satanic because I get a really uncomfortable, oppressive sensation from evangelical Christian 'centres.'

I'm absolutely fine with churches, cathedrals etc. but once I got lost late at night in New England and we ended up asking directions at a Christian camp and it had a very odd atmosphere. I couldn't wait to get out of the place. I've encountered the same sensation at an evangelical Christian conference place in the UK. Am I alone in this? Maybe I'm waiting for a thunderbolt to hit me...

Carmen was your first line a joke? If not I am - what a truly dreadful way to dress.

CarmenSanDiego · 26/06/2010 17:33

Nope! Definitely not joking... And let me present: Christian T-shirts

Particularly keen on 'HisWay' (Subway) and 'Jesus died for MySpace in Heaven'...

Fleecy · 26/06/2010 19:24

Oh I'm cringing at those - awful! And the sad thing is, I'm not entirely surprised. There are some people out there seriously lacking in taste.
