To think that very christian people often look different?

I don't mean this in an unpleasant way. I just find that sometimes when I meet people I think "you look like you are a deeply religious christian" and generally I am right, they do turn out to be. I don't think it works on less committed christians. Is this like having gaydar? Does anyone else have this experience? What is it I see in their appearance that makes me think this? Am I just kidding myself about this in some way?

Bollocks. Really.

TheSmallClanger · 23/06/2010 17:27

The only God Grin I have ever really recognised is Jonathon Edwards, and he doesn't count any more. DH recognises it in the street, and has been right about some school people when DD was younger.

The thing about jeans was true at my university as well.

Some Christian clergy have that special way of speaking. Every. Word. Is. Annunciated. So. Carefully. Thoughtfully. Piously even.

The Archbishop of Canterbury is a good example. Do they have lessons as part of their religious training?

I've always wondered because I don't know of any other group of people who talk like that.

stubbornhubby · 23/06/2010 17:40

a search on flickr is pretty illuminating...

  • christian smile
  • atheist smile

what do you make of that, Dawkins, eh?

TheFallenMadonna · 23/06/2010 17:40

Annunciated. Almost appropriate.

seeker · 23/06/2010 17:41

The enunciation thing is Anglican, I think. Catholics tend towards the Tiggerish.

ThefallenMadonna - but quite entertaining bollocks, don't you think?

Morloth · 23/06/2010 17:42

LOL, we get those photos all the time from relatives/missionaries whatever.

There is a certain look IME.

TheFallenMadonna · 23/06/2010 17:46

Meh. I'm a Christian. Well, a Catholic, so not welcome in the CU at college particularly.

I went to a college with only scientists and engineers though, so I think that may have overridden any religious sartorial influence.

TheFallenMadonna · 23/06/2010 17:47

Tigger!!

scrimble · 23/06/2010 17:47

Woops. I did mean enunciated.

I quite like the sound of Tiggerish tho'...

auntpolly · 23/06/2010 17:55

Maybe it's genetic then! I wonder if devout christianity is dominant or recessive

I am a Christian with cracking tits.

hornofplenty · 23/06/2010 20:11

This reminds me of a conversation I overheard between 2 pupils.

Pupil A : Some Buddhists have moved in next door.

Pupil B: Are they all treehuggers who wear orange.

Pupil A: No they keep having noisy parties and have pissed people round a lot.

Pupil B: Are you sure they are not Catholic

Pupil A: No they have friendly bald heads.

Huh, I'm a Christian.

I never particulary favoured the jeans and shirt look, but my jeans were from topshop and looked quite cool imo when teamed with a decent vest top.

But there was a definate shirty element to some of them.

Mind you I was part of the rebellious group at CU and I also went to the clubs and danced the night away.

LeQueen I know what you mean, there was a group of guys at my CU and literally every girl fell over themselves for them (I did quite like one of them) but it then got a bit ridiculous when everybody started dating/breaking up with each other, it was like some random incestouous youth group. Me and my vest top clad happy clappy friends then moved on and decided that David Tennant deserved our adoration more . I didn't like the hugging either, freaked me out that someone I knew a matter of minutes wanted to get that up close and personal with me. I still don't do random hugging.

I was a hippy look-alike at varsity (uni), so there goes your clothing theory again LOL

My non Christian pals hug me as much or as little as my Christian pals. Maybe it's because we are South African and naturally warmer people?

What a bizarre thread.

SiriusStar · 24/06/2010 13:30

I would love to try and dress dh dwayne dibbly style but I'm sure he would have none of it. Actually, I am chuckling at the thought of turning up to church dressed like some of the pictures posted. Our friends would wonder what on earth had happened.
This is all a bit funny really.
I am curious as to how Christian I look though.

Hullygully · 24/06/2010 13:31

I always think a cicatrice is a nice touch

JenniPenni · 24/06/2010 13:44

Sirius... so are we safe to assume that all the frowning unhappy looking folk on the tube in the am are all non Christians??? ;)

Colliecross · 24/06/2010 14:05

It's eye make up - Christians don't wear eye make up do they?

GrimmaTheNome · 24/06/2010 14:10

I used to wear eye makeup when I was a christian, less so now, so there goes that theory .

Probably the only difference in my appearance is maybe I look less smug and annoyingly grinny nowadays.
