hello I am a single mum of a three and a half year old and i am 20 weeks pregnant with my second, I qualified for SSG on my first pregnancy and when my daughter turned 4 months I went out to work, I am currently unable to work due to a severe knee injury, so i have to claim benefits, I get £360 a month to live on my rent is £50 a month higher than my housing benefit so then that leaves me with £310 a month then take out Gas, Electric, Water, TV liscence (£160 per month) that leaves me with £150 to feed us for a month where as most families spend close to that every week, I live below the breadline and buy the time I have saved up for all the essentials my baby needs it will be close to 12 months old, when my daughter no longer needed her baby things I gave them all to a friend who really needed them I didn't even get a penny for them. So I disagree with the one child rule

Joanne this is a very old thread you would be better off starting a new one of your own. Babies do not need a huge amount spending on them maybe start a thread asking for ideas on how to deal with your income level and meeting the needs of your child... in effect a budget baby thread Smile

i was 17 in 2001 when i had my son and i got a ssg for him.... i had a daughter in 2006 and i worked so i paid for everything and then wasnt expecting to have any more and gave all my things to charity. now i dont qualify for sure start even tho i claimed it once ten years ago!! i dont have any baby things and am 25 weeks pregnant by suprise! i live on is with my 2 other kids!! can i claim a community care grant or budgeting loan... im confused as to what help i can ask for! help.

TidyDancer · 10/05/2011 15:48

Lucy, this thread is probably too old for you to get help on it now, why don't you start your own thread in Chat or Pregnancy etc?

Hope you get the help you need!

I don't think there is anything now, is there? If so I've not heard of it and am 31weeks preggo, so would love to know!

RitaMorgan · 19/05/2011 14:05

You can only get the Sure Start grant if you are on benefits or get the higher level of tax credits (higher than the family element). If you both work full time then it is unlikely.

No, it now only applies to the first child regardless of whether it was claimed or not in the past.
