My DC (2 and 7mo) won't be seeing their dad until wednesday, so should I have got them to call him this morning? send something in the post?

I don't think very highly of him so am not fussed about making him feel special, and the DC are a bit young to understand what fathers day is. When he phones them later I will try and get a 'happy fathers day' out of DD1, and get them to do a picture for when they next see him, but that is it. AIBU?

I think you asking them to draw a picture is a million times better than just buying a card anyway.

Sounds perfect.

they made me a card and lunch on mothers day, but I was taking DC over to him anyway. If they were seeing him then I would of done something nice but as they're not it can wait until next week. Just felt a bit bad as this is first fathers day without him here.

I wouldn't worry about it - the children are too little to understand, as you say.

Father's day is totally made up, and HE'S the one that isn't there anymore.... Don't sweat it, at their age especially, it really isn't important.

YANBU, picture and talking on the phone sound fine to me. They are too little to make a big fuss about Father's Day anyway.
