Just when I feel a sense of optimism about Britain....

I encounter the most vile prejudice ever. Firstly by a woman from blackpool in Devon. I asked her why she moved South, thinking she'd say her DH, weather or something. She replied 'The dirty Pakis'...'scrounging, filthy Pakis'....I was so shocked, that as she carried on I just stood there. She asked for my money and I said I would go elsewhere, I could give my money to a racist.

Then I am on fb having a conversation with complete bastards who think single mothers and disabled people are a drain on our society. Where does this cruelty come from? What's happening?

Twas ever thus - used to be worse if anything - and I don't think this sort of thing is uniquely British. (e.g prewar the US practised eugenics against the 'feebleminded', and some of our European neighbours are much more openly racist in the political arena)

Some humans are just nasty - fortunately a minority. Good for you for speaking out to the woman in Devon.

scottishmummy · 11/06/2010 20:52

but that isnt representative of all people.most folk are really smashing.just the pottymouth ranters ruin yor day

but on other hand i genuinely beleive vast majority of folk are really v nice, decent

mountainmonkey · 11/06/2010 20:54

You just have to keep reminding yourself that nasty people like that are a very small minority.

MorrisZapp · 11/06/2010 20:55

There are people who think like that in every country of the world.

Why bother engaging with them.

cornsilkcottagecheese · 11/06/2010 20:56

There will always be ignorant people. Happily they are in the minority. Was she running a business? I think I would have reported her to the police for racism.

usualsuspect · 11/06/2010 20:58

There will always be ignorant people ...I live in a brilliant multi cultural city ..most people are fine with it ..some are not... I just ignore the stupid fuckers

posieparker · 11/06/2010 20:58

I have closed fb for the night!!

I know how you feel Posie, was walking through the park/field near us the the other week and they had put in cycle barriers at the end of the path. A normal looking woman commented on said barriers, I then replied that it would be a pita with pushchairs. She then replied, it must have been them Pakis?!? Must be the most random racism ever, I just looked like .

blueshoes · 11/06/2010 21:45

There will always be people like that. Usually they will be stuck in some hovel of a town out of our way. But the internet allows them to break out of geography.

posieparker · 11/06/2010 21:52

I think this person is really someone else, she used a couple of phrases I recognise.

The area I live isn't very diverse racially but I wish it was. I'm sick of others ignorance and intolerance. My Grandmother was subjected to abuse & prejudice throughout the time she lived in the UK. She was French and had a strong accent (which she was proud of). It frustrates me mightily that some people judge others in this way especially random blaming from everything from potholes to terrorism.
