Can people tell if you search them on facebook? I have to admit I've looked at a few peoples' profiles that I wouldn't friend request, just people from the past, purely out of nosiness (I can't be the only one to have done this, surely?)

No, I shouldn't have looked, or no, they can't tell if I've looked, erm, a few times , I do have a valid reason...

Perfectly acceptable to look up old "acquaintances" on FB - isn't that the whole point one of the main reasons for using it?
