Took DD to park today, went to the under 5 play area, lots of children playing there. Woman with a DC, probably around 2-3 years old, smoking away, right next to the toddler swings.

Now I have nothing against smokers, but why smoke in a kids play area? Why not go outside of the play area, away from the kids?

AIBU to be annoyed at this woman? I did not say anything, did not want to cause a scene, but WWYD?

OP posts:

But if she was there, on her own with her own child, she wouldn't be able to go outside of the play area. It's an open space, and if there are no restrictions, why shouldn't she smoke?

prettyfly1 · 04/06/2010 22:48

did this exact same post not come up about a month ago?

rainbowstardrops · 04/06/2010 22:52

I totally agree. Can't you take your child to the park without the need to smoke a cigarette whilst you're there?

Totally unecessary as far as i'm concerned.

daisy5678 · 05/06/2010 09:59

Prettyfly and osama, why be so rude? Is everyone supposed to search every thread from the past before they post anything ever? It's stuff like that that pisses people off and puts them off MN.

scrab806ble · 05/06/2010 10:02

Oh well.

usualsuspect · 05/06/2010 10:02

Its the weekly smoking in the playground thread .....

berri · 05/06/2010 10:02

What gmv said - it's actually boring that so many posters react like this, if you're that bored then don't bother posting on threads you've read on the subject before!

In fact why did you even click on the thread if the subject doesn't interest you?

ScentedLovePuff · 05/06/2010 10:04

YANBU, this would have annoyed me too. There is a time and a place for cigerettes, around children is not it. Surely they could have managed waiting until they were out of the park?

daisy5678 · 05/06/2010 10:06

It's just 'oh-look-we're-such-experienced-MNers-that-we're-going-to-show-how-cool-we-are-by-putting-down-thing s-others-do-and-proving-we-have-been-here-a-long-time'.

So pointless, ladies.

Don't read the thread if you ain't interested.

Don't comment just to be petty and pathetic.

ScentedLovePuff · 05/06/2010 10:10

Well put vodka! Unless Mumsnet are going to add the disclaimer: "If you are going to post a question, please read through the entire forum and consider how new and interesting your post may be to 'x, y and z' poster before posting. These are not your problems and questions, they are their entertainment."

feels cheeky today...... awaits delicious s

violethill · 05/06/2010 10:17

I can't understand why anyone thinks its ok to smoke around kids full stop.

lorelilee · 05/06/2010 10:22

Scented and vodka - I think it's just that a hell of a lot of the people on here don't have a life outside of MN and so see every single thread, so don't shout, just pity them wicked grin

ScentedLovePuff · 05/06/2010 10:24

high fives lorelilee [manic giggle]

Osama · 05/06/2010 10:37

Not search every post from the past, no. Just use a little common sense. It takes just 30 seconds to enter 'smoking' in the 'search' box, which then shows every single smoking thread since MN began. But then i'm afraid you wouldn't get the reaction you were hoping for, would you? Do try and be original.

heres one that was made earlier

lorelilee · 05/06/2010 10:42

Oh get over yourself Osama! As said before, if you don't like the topic - don't read the thread! Most of us don't have the time or inclination to 'research' our every utterance incase someone may have broached it before and consequently upset a few of the more precious MNtters.

fryalot · 05/06/2010 10:49

no, of course people shouldn't smoke in a children's play area.

But... I would rather they smoked outside in the "fresh" air than smoked in the house with their kids in the same room, or smoked in the car with the kids, or numerous other places that are much more dangerous than this.

And yes, this thread has probably been done loads of times before, but it's still a relevant question to ask and you really can't expect everyone to search the forum for previous threads. Parent & toddler parking spaces anyone?

ScentedLovePuff · 05/06/2010 10:52

Get a grip Osama! People can post on whatever subject they like, original or not - and you can choose to read them or not!

precious MNtters. Strange. A bit like the post above about how some people have no life and spend all their time on MN. This coming over all superior is funny to say the least.

MumInBeds · 05/06/2010 11:01

I don't particularly like the smell of smoke but I accept it is the individual right to smoke in an open air public space.

I was a bit concerned when seeing some people smoking the other day (when it was very hot and dry) in a play area with wood chips as a floor covering. I hope that this kind of covering is in some way treated to prevent a fire risk but I wouldn't like to count on it.

itsybitsy08 · 05/06/2010 11:10

As it is a forum i dont think there is anything wrong with starting new threads about 'old and done' topics - maybe OP's want to have a live discussion, and add their opinions.

People are also frequently chastisted for adding comments to old threads.

YANBU.

Step outside of the playpark or at least away from the swings etc if you need a nicotine hit that much.

lorelilee · 05/06/2010 11:41

Not superior, just trying to point out(albeit in a slightly sarcastic manner ) that this board is all inclusive and not the preserve of those who think, for some reason, that they can dictate the content.
