to be shocked and concerned about a 12 yr old having a tattoo?

Name changed.

Someone i know has allowed her 12 yr old Son to have a tattoo done. This was done at home by her DP (not the boys Dad) who has his own tattooing kit. He isn't qualified in any way that i know of. He bought himself a kit do his own tattoos to add to the ones he already had.

Is this even legal?

She said she didn't say no but said she wasn't keen for him to have one!

I am worried she could get into trouble for allowing it to be done. How will he keep it hidden once back at school doing PE etc?

Who in their right mind has a tattoo done buy someone not qualified and more than likely has dodgy sterilizing procedures??

I really hope this is a joke because DP has a tatt that he regrets from 17. I dread to think what a 12 year old would want.

zerominuszero · 02/06/2010 22:01

Probably not legal. No, you are not being unreasonable. BUT, there is not a lot you can do about it. Unless, that is, you're thinking of calling the police or social services... are you?

bigstripeytiger · 02/06/2010 22:02

That isnt legal is it?

ifancyashandy · 02/06/2010 22:03

Nope, not legal - you have to be over 16 to get one done. Idiots.

ShockedandConcerned · 02/06/2010 22:03

No sadly not a joke.

Zero I don't know what to do. Can't do anything at the moment anyway because it would point straight back at me and i don't want to lose a friend because of it.

julybutterfly · 02/06/2010 22:05

What is it? Where is it?

That's awful!

ShockedandConcerned · 02/06/2010 22:06

It's on his upper arm. Heart with Mum in it. Looks terrible and not even well done.

ravenAK · 02/06/2010 22:09

Oh dear.

There's a place all the underage kids at school have theirs done - it's called Dirty Pete's. Why anyone would let a character called this stick a needle in them...

I quite like tattoos, but they're for grownups. YANBU, but I doubt there's much you can do.

lolapoppins · 02/06/2010 22:11

Ugh, how awful.

I had an ex boyfirend who's dad did the same thing when he was 15. Really bad blue/green drawing of a naked woman. At 20 he started having laser treatment to remove it but it didn't work because of the way the tattoo was done. he had to get another one over the top of it, poor bloke grew up to hate tattoos and now he's stuck with one. He only let his dad do it to make him proud as well, he didn't even want it.

PersonalClown · 02/06/2010 22:15

This is reminding of an early Simpsons episode when Bart gets a Mom heart and they use the Christmas money to pay for the laser removal.

confusedmummie · 02/06/2010 22:32

so its not the fake tattoo stuff coz thats bad enough for kids let a lone real 1s!! and i think the rules are 18! not too certain though

ShockedandConcerned · 02/06/2010 22:34

No not a fake one. Even they look better than this!

Buddleja · 02/06/2010 22:46

Can't it be seen as ABH or something - I'm sure there as a case yonks ago where the tattoist was charge with this

Something to do with permentaly marking someone without proper consent (in the legal assumption that someone under 16 can't give consent for this)

Amapoleon · 02/06/2010 22:49

Blimey!

MathsMadMummy · 02/06/2010 22:52

yuck.

this is why DH waited til his late 20s/30s for his 3 tattoos, to save up money for a reputable artist and to be sure he really wanted them. his DS, now 18, reckons his mum's friend will give him a tattoo and we really don't want this to happen as she's not trained!!! better to pay and get a good result. he's quite childish too so may end up regretting it. we're really hoping the urge will fizzle out.

BritFish · 03/06/2010 02:00

you MUST report it. please please please report it. tell the police. noone should be tattooing unlicensed, he wont know whats in those inks or how to be safe or anything, and he might do more to that poor child.
i may seem like im overreacting, but please contact the police definately. they will contact social services from there.
this is not safe for the child, you can see that. any proper tattoo artist worth anything worth never, ever do a child knowing they are underage.

i know i sound hysterical but you must report it. i hope the mum wouldnt get into trouble because it sounds like she was bullied/cajoled into it, but the dad needs to be reported so he cant do this to anyone else.

ShockedandConcerned · 03/06/2010 09:26

BritFish It has been playing on my mind half the night. I just don't know what to do. But i agree with you that he shouldn't have done it. Could do with speaking to someone just for advice but i don't know who.

A heart on the bicep with 'Mum' written on it?? Seriously?

ShockedandConcerned · 03/06/2010 09:34

Yes, seriously.

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 03/06/2010 09:35

really?

StealthPolarBear · 03/06/2010 09:36

sorry, bad x post

ShinyAndNew · 03/06/2010 09:37

When he grows it will stretch and look awful. I wonder if the NHS would remove it, with him being so young?

AmazingBouncingFerret · 03/06/2010 09:43

Heh I friend of mine had MUFC on his bicep when he was young. AFter alot of growing it now looks like this M U FC

DH had a tattoo done by someone with their own tattoo gun, bloody awful thing. He has been through about 8 laser treatments and needs 3 more he can then start to get it covered up.

ameliameerkat · 03/06/2010 09:43

You have to report it somehow - that's awful! You have to be 18 to get tattooed. I hope the DP doesn't have any blood borne illnesses, cos I bet he doesn't have the proper sterilising gear.....
