Name changed.

Someone i know has allowed her 12 yr old Son to have a tattoo done. This was done at home by her DP (not the boys Dad) who has his own tattooing kit. He isn't qualified in any way that i know of. He bought himself a kit do his own tattoos to add to the ones he already had.

Is this even legal?

She said she didn't say no but said she wasn't keen for him to have one!

I am worried she could get into trouble for allowing it to be done. How will he keep it hidden once back at school doing PE etc?

Did you phone SS?

Jhoopsa · 09/06/2010 11:43

You could get in contact with the press and expose this nutter - you can contact my friend John at the Daily Star on [email protected]

ImSoNotTelling · 09/06/2010 11:56

Kaloki your cut and paste relates to businesses. Certainly it is illegal to tattoo people under a certain age for money. But it all breaks down a bit when it's not for money. I know a few tattoo artists and they practice on themselves and their friends, none of that is illegal. My friends and I tried to tattoo each other with needles and ink when we were at school

My point is that I am not 100% sure that tattooing someone underage for no money is illegal. I'm not sure that it's that straightforward.

However certainly what he has done is just ludicrously wrong whichever way you look at it. There is no conceivable excuse for this. I am sure that SS would be very interested.

Heathcliffscathy · 09/06/2010 12:02

this is awful but can i just ask: how is getting social services involved, arresting the mothers partner and possibly her going to actually help this boy?

it he better off in care? really?

the tattoo is done now, am i naive to think that this might result in a total decimation of the boys life? or will SS just give the mum a stern talking to and will only the boyf get in trouble.

Ripeberry · 09/06/2010 12:06

The person who did the tatoo, must be reported to the police as it's an assault.
And the parents need to SS round to teach them their duty as parents

ImSoNotTelling · 09/06/2010 12:17

It is not unlikely that the boy will end up with more tattoos if no-one does anything, as it takes a lot of practice to improve. Hence why tattoo artists are always covered in tattoos (they practice on themselves and each other).

If this bloke is prepared to do one for practice, it's not a stretch to imagine that there might be more.

I would say that this man should be kept away from the child really. Having a tattoo hurts, the boy is 12, if he thinks it is fine to tattoo him then he's not the sort of person who should be around the child IMO.

Oblomov · 09/06/2010 12:22

Not that I am condoning this, but I think lots of people are over-reacting here. What do you want the Police and SS to do ? what are you suggesting happens to the dp, the mum, and the ds ?

Oblomov · 09/06/2010 12:24

ISNT, are you also suggesting calling SS ?

ImSoNotTelling · 09/06/2010 12:35

I know, I know.

I think that permanently altering a child like this, and the strong likelihood (IMO) that the boy will be tattooed further, the fact that tattooing the child is so obviously wrong, and the fact that it will have been painful (and from the description this is not a tiny tattoo) - this bloke should not be around the child IMO. I think he sounds at best utterly negligent and stupid and with no comprehension of consequences, at worst he simply doens't care about the child at all.

If my partner stuck needles in my DD for any non medical reason, I would expect a call from SS, I think. That's what he has done, after all.

I'm not saying anyone should go to prison, just that someone needs to do have a word/do something about this man. As things stand I wouldn't be surprised to hear that the boy ends up with more tattoos.

Maybe, if just 'a word' is required then, then Police is better. Could be intimidating enough for the dp to take notice. but no further action ?
Whereas, Once you start the SS route ....
Actually, does it come under the SS juristication (spelling?) ? will have to check.

Tattoo artist fined for underage work

An Edinburgh man has been fined for tattooing teenagers, one as young as 13.

Charles Stewart, 49, was caught when the parents of the youngsters saw their tattoos, which they had been trying to hide, and alerted police.

Stewart, admitted at Edinburgh Sheriff Court having a business which provided tattooing without a licence.

He carried out the offence from his home address and elsewhere between 1 January and 5 March.

Stewart also admitted tattooing five teenagers under the age of 18 - three were aged 15, one aged 16, and one aged 13 - between January and February of this year.

Defence agent Stephen Mannifield said: "He wasn't completely familiar with the legislation.

"He has learned his lesson and will certainly know for next time."

Sheriff Elizabeth Jarvie QC fined Stewart £240.

She said the fine had been reduced from £360 to reflect Stewart's guilty plea.

It saddens me that so many people are so anti SS that they would prefer this matter to lie rather then the OP contact them.

OP, did you contact anyone?

Planning on phoning the school in the morning. Decided to wait a week to give time for hopefully someone to see it or to for it to get round.

No way would i contact a newspaper !

TBH a 'word' from the police would probably go in one ear and out the other with him! I think he has also tattooed a 15 nearly 16 yr old but that isn't as bad as a 12 yr old! And he has done many other people!
