To wonder how people can afford a 50K car?

Being stuck for 7 hours on the motorway I got rather bored and started playing the which car is the most expensive game (sad I know!). But there were LOADS over 50k on the road.

How does anyone afford one!?? Luxury yes, do I want one? YES!! But how on earth does anyone afford one??

Company expenses?

ClaireDeLoon · 30/05/2010 20:52

They earn enough.

mintyfresh · 30/05/2010 20:52

Ha ha - I often wonder about this..

MEW,MEW,MEW

BelleDameSansMerci · 30/05/2010 20:52

Leasing, I imagine... Or they have a lot of money. I have a friend who has several cars that cost more than £50k. He is absolutely loaded though. Wish I fancied him

HelenRosie · 30/05/2010 20:53

Lease it. I don't know anyone with an expensive car who actually buys it outright

MarshaBrady · 30/05/2010 20:54

A large bonus each year - well incase of my friends / relatives who have one... or two or more.

kitcat1977 · 30/05/2010 20:55

I've noticed loads of Bentleys and Jags on the roads lately. Do you think people are investing in luxury cars because interest on saving is shite at the moment?

VengefulKitty · 30/05/2010 20:56

My dad has always aspired to have a nice car. He has a tiny terraced house, no mod cons, no new clothes (most are older than me) etc etc.

His savings plus his payout when he retired = veh veh nice Porsche.

I lurve driving it

TheBolter · 30/05/2010 20:57

Being cynical and not at all jealous honest guv I've always thought, if you buy an expensive car you are incredibly rich or incredibly stupit.

They cost so much money, especially new, and they depreciate so quickly! I know two people who have leased big 4 x 4s and then found themselves unable to keep up the loan repayments, and unable to resell them for anything like the value of the loan.

Daft I say.

VengefulKitty · 30/05/2010 20:57

Oh, and he bought it outright with 'cash'. No HP

spookycharlotte121 · 30/05/2010 20:58

My mum lives right next to a private school. the other week it was kicking out time and as I drove past I counted 13 landrovers.... brand new and sparkley. My little peugeot quivers at the sight of them

MarshaBrady · 30/05/2010 20:58

Actually dad has a Jaguar, not from bonuses just working hard. He drives a lot and loves it. I haven't driven it!

MarshaBrady · 30/05/2010 21:00

I can understand why someone like my father would buy a Jaguar and enjoy it. Another family member fixes vintage cars, has loads. It's an expensive hobby, nice to be passionate about something.

HecateQueenOfWitches · 30/05/2010 21:02

They are very VERY rich
It's a company car
They've got it on HP
It's leased
They're taking it for a test drive
They've nicked it

tryingtobemarrypoppins2 · 30/05/2010 21:19

VengefulKitty - good one hime!!
LOLHecateQueenOfWitches

I've just discovered I could lease a BMW Z4 for only £100 a month more than I lease my Fiat 500 for.

stripeyknickersspottysocks · 30/05/2010 21:23

No kids?

LadyBlaBlah · 30/05/2010 21:24

Often owned by people who need to look rich

It is cheap to get a 50k car if you really want one

Most people I know who have one can't really afford them - or they can afford them on a month by month basis..........but to buy them outright - no way !

VengefulKitty · 30/05/2010 21:24

Helen - that is because Z4 are horrid cars to look at and drive. Trust me, I know.

They also depreciate really badly. A 6yo one will only sell for approx £7500. Considering what you pay for a new one, it is shocking!

BMW are only good for the saloon cars imo.

ItsGrimUpNorth · 30/05/2010 21:25

What is a 50k car for example? I don't think I'd know one if I saw one.

A Volvo 7 seater? A Range Rover? God, they're ugly boxy cars, aren't they?

tryingtobemarrypoppins2 · 30/05/2010 21:25

I just had a look too HelenRosie a very posh Range Rover was £1500 a month!

A girl I used to work with has just got engaged to someone veh well off - he's just bought himself a Porsche Boxster and her a Porsche Cayenne. I think he can afford it because he's such a successful drug dealer businessman.

VengefulKitty · 30/05/2010 21:29

It is not always about trying to look rich! what about just wanting a nice car?!

My father adores his car. Like I said, he owns it outright. Brand new, 42 miles on the clock when we collected it. He washes and polishes it at least once a week.

It is not a status thing to him. He wanted it for over 20 years. When he could finally get it, he went for it. He certainly doesn't look rich in his Primark jacket and clothes that are eons old!

Now, when I drive it, yes, I sit in snobbery and glee that people think I am rich

VengefulKitty · 30/05/2010 21:36

Actually, I have no idea why I am defending this... I am extremely irritated with him atm, so can only think horrid thoughts.

As you were with the expensive car and owner bashing.

Kewcumber · 30/05/2010 21:38

hey hcate did you get my email (have I sent it to the wrong email address?)
