To be annoyed at DD's teacher

Who told the class that the police are taking down the St George flag because it's a symbol of the BNP? It's not a symbol of the BNP, it's our national flag! I detest the fact that the BNP are trying to hijack both the union flag and the St George flag for their own horrible racist ends. I am English/British and don't see why I shouldn't fly my own flag without being thought of as a fascist. I'm left-wing, happy to live in a multi-cultural society, happy to support England in their bid to win the world cup. I think the teacher was trying to explain this, but to say that the flag was a BNP symbol is outrageous. Or AIBU?

YANBU does that mean all of the football supporters that are about to put up flags support the BNP???

Uh-oh just as I was typing the Mars Bar / BNP advert came on! The bloody racist giant Mars Bar GRRRRR...

A teacher really should know better and should explain the origin of the flag and explain that the BNP have chosen to use it but using the flag does not mean you support the BNP!

KorkiiEffenkrakers · 30/05/2010 08:14

The teacher is WRONG pure and simple. I am an ex teacher myself and my God there are some thickies who are teaching!

mumbar · 30/05/2010 08:18

yep korki said it all

BouncingTurtle · 30/05/2010 08:22

Idiot teacher, it simply isn't true, it's just a nasty rumour started by BNP types

Although you know there is now a law that idiot drivers are now obliged by law to have England flags clipped to their roofs. The bigger the idiot the more flags

lazarusb · 30/05/2010 13:05

Have you pointed out to the teacher/head how misinformed they are? I would.

PortiaNovmerriment · 30/05/2010 13:22

Yawn

Back to troll school please

MrsC2010 · 30/05/2010 14:34

I suspect that it won't be the teacher's decision. Perhaps she should have inserted the words 'seen as', but essentially I don't think it is worth getting annoyed at her personally over it.

BritFish · 30/05/2010 16:28

'they're trying to take our flags away!'

hmm, yes.
duzz she tiype lik dis?
because theres a few hundred extremely misinformed hysterical facebook groups for people like her...

frakkit · 30/05/2010 16:35

WTF?!

DuelingFanjo · 30/05/2010 16:41

Are you sure? Which school was it? I don't think I believe you.

Surprise · 30/05/2010 20:01

I'm certainly no troll - have been on MN for about 8 years! It's a high school (DD is in year 9). I am going to write to her teacher and ask her to explain her thinking, and to make sure she explains to the children that it is not a BNP symbol. I was just so shocked by it.

YANBU

Pozzled · 30/05/2010 21:57

YANBU, and I would definitely complain.

But I was a bit unsure as to exactly what she told them- that the police are removing any St George flags they see, knocking on people's doors and so on? That's just ridiculous. I would understand a bit more if she was trying to explain why the school wouldn't display a flag of St George, or something like that.

FakePlasticTrees · 30/05/2010 22:08

YANBU - but how old is she? In the late 70's early 80's far right groups did use the st George's flag as their logo, if she's that generation she might still see it that way and have sort of missed that in the last 15-20 years there's been a 'reclaiming' by the middle ground of the flag.

A lot of people too young to remember that don't get the connection with far right groups. Which is a good thing. My lefty Dad was a bit in the late 90's about the flag being everywhere until he got that it wasn't a sign that neo-nazis had moved into our close...
