swan savaged

I know I am not being unreasonable to be devastated about what happened at a park near me yesterday evening,I just thought I would tell you because I am so
May I also point out [in the light of recent thread I don't want it to be a for/against dogs thread, as everyone knows here though I myself am a dog ownwer/lover.
Yesterday a dog savaged and killed a mother swan in front of her 5/6 cygnets and her partner swan. This little family of swans I have seen daily, and in fact found out the news this morning when I went to see them.It took the Rspca and police 2 hours to arrive.A local mother had to wade into the lake to help. The owner of the dog initially got off, but has since given herself up to the police.
What a really sad story it has broke my heart, they were really beautiful and enchanted all the locals watching them.I feel so devastated for the male swan as they pair for lifeand the poor cygnets so

why did you post in AIBU then??

anyway, that is really, really sad what will happen to the cygnets? and swans mate for life don't they? so a sad daddy swan must be out there too

3littlefrogs · 27/05/2010 18:09

This why dogs should be on leads.

MillyR · 27/05/2010 18:11

That is very sad.

But it will become a for/against dogs thread, which you must have known when you posted it. Maybe I should post a link to the 13 min video of the 12 year old girl beating her elderly neighbour's springer spaniel, that was in the news recently, to even things up.

I have no idea why you have started another dog thread after what happened on MN earlier.

darkandstormy · 27/05/2010 18:18

The reason why is to tell you about something so tragic. As I said I was involved on the other thread, and am a massive dog lover too.I just am amazed more than anything that the owner initially walked away from the scene.Unbelievable.

well yes, but there are other places you could have posted... chat, other subjects etc etc

just would have meant you didn't have to put a disclaimer at the top thats all

darkandstormy · 27/05/2010 18:27

Is this not the most read board though with the biggest viewing,I am not sure?

Just wanted to highlight it

IMVHO, you are NBU to feel sad, but devastated?
probably you are.

ShinyAndNew · 27/05/2010 20:46

I think it would descend into chaos whichever board it was posted on.

But YANBU. My dog is a terrier. If there is wildlife about he is restrained.

Do you know what will happen to the cygnets? Did the RSPCA take them?

avril thats harsh (and snotty)

swans are property of the state (queen) and its illegal to kill them. the dog owner clearly couldnt control their dog and its understandable that people are upset by this incident

id be concerned by anyone who could not control a dog off the lead.

Cretaceous · 27/05/2010 21:47

I'm sure the dog owner was mortified and upset, too. I know I would be. I guess they hadn't got much dog experience, or maybe the dog had a mad moment or maybe they were walking the dog for a friend.

I know someone whose dog got a baby deer. She was really upset, but the warden explained that they reduce the population anyway, so it was just one less to cull (Think they only cull older ones normally.)

How sad, though.

Vallhala · 27/05/2010 21:51

It is sad and it's generally believed that swans suffer a lot of distress when this sort of thing happens to their lifelong mates.

In a city in my area a man recently shot and killed a swan, leaving it's mate distraught. . We also have one who despises the selfish, ignorant rowers on his stretch of the river and is named Mr Asbo as a result.
