about sunbathing?

Asking for trouble here.

Am I the only person who can't think of anything more horrific or unpleasant than lying in the sun, with the sun on you?

I'm not a vampire, for the record, and I understand that some people enjoy the sensation of slowly burning, but I am one of those pale English-rose types that cannot stand being remotely hot and runs for the shade every time the sun pops its cheery head out from behind the cloud.

Am I the only one?

I really don't understand sunbathing. I went once when I was thirteen and got bored out of my skull. Just laid there, feeling myself get warm. Don't get the point of it, and its so bad for your skin...

compo · 23/05/2010 19:51

Yanbu

I don't get it either

even less if it's sunbathing on the beach with sand everywhere, people right next to you, those pictures in the papers of crowded beaches = my idea of hell

EricNorthmansmistress · 23/05/2010 19:52

I like sitting in the sun for short periods with sunglasses and a book, but must have factor 50 on. Sunbathing is for suckers

nickytwotimes · 23/05/2010 19:52

Oh, I love a wee seat int he sun. Not for ages, but half an hour with plenty of sun cream and not at midday definitely makes me feel better mentally. Feels like some sort of happy chamicals are being released in my brain. But no, I would not want to lie out in it baking tbh. Prefer to potter.

cupcakesandbunting · 23/05/2010 19:58

Hallelujah, OP. Thought I was the only one.

I am sick and tired of getting moaned at on group holidays when I want to sit under a parasol/tree. "Oh come on, Cupcakes. You want to go home a different colour than you came!" Er, yeah. I'll sit in the sun barbecueing and spitting for a few hours, turn red and sore, my skin will peel, then I'll go home slightly pink. Really worth the discomfort.

I could tell a good story about how insistence that I need to sunbathe led to a £700 early departure from a holiday a few years ago but it still makes me fume, so I won't

usualsuspect · 23/05/2010 19:59

I like to sit in the sun and read

vintage · 23/05/2010 20:01

i took my comfy armchair into the garden yesteday we have lots of huge trees and it was dappled sunshine where i was sitting ...it was heaven warm but not beating down on me

ifancyashandy · 23/05/2010 20:01

Oh YABU! My idea of heaven is a hot hot hot beach, a sunlounger, a book, a cool drink(s), a pool and noooooooothing else. I can easily do three weeks of that, not a bother.

booyhoo · 23/05/2010 20:02

scented i am with you. i do not sunbathe whatsoever, at all. i dont sit in the sun even when fully clothed. i sit in the shade. i am petrified of getting skin cancer. i have hundreds of moles all over my body and i just know i would be the ideal target for it. my friend has had to have loads of bits of skin removed in the past few years and she says it is the most painful thing she has ever experienced.

no thank you, not for me.

my sister thinks i am very strange.

SherbetDibDab · 23/05/2010 20:03

I don't like sitting in the sun but I love it when it's hot enough to sit in the shade with a book and not get cold. Quick dip in the pool to cool down.

The following conversation annoys me -
Person: How was the holiday?
Me: Yes, lovely, wonderful, we had an amazing time.
Person: You're not very brown.

Like it means my holiday was clearly rubbish.

mememe30 · 23/05/2010 20:08

I went to Australia and came back as pale as I went. Enjoyed myself with lots of suncream and a hat!!!!!

booyhoo · 23/05/2010 20:09

i hate it when people say "you wont get a tan" when i am plastering on the factor 50.

i dont want a tan, tan is permanent skin damage.

when i was in spain 2 years ago i wore 50 teh whole time but i got suncream in my eyes and they watered for a few days. i now have permanent brown marks at the corners of my eyes where the tears washed away the suncream. it takes alot of concealer to cover it.

venusonarockbun · 23/05/2010 20:22

YANBU at all. Why would anyone want to damage their skin and give themselves early wrinkles?

Disenchanted3 · 23/05/2010 20:24

I like to walk around in the sun, but never sunbathe.

My mum got skin cancer after years of sunbeds and such, luckily it was on a mole and she noticed immediatly and it was removed but it makes me really careful in the sun now.

parakeet · 23/05/2010 20:31

A tan is not skin damage.

When you burn, that is skin damage.

cupcakesandbunting · 23/05/2010 20:36

That's not actually correct, Parakeet. You don't have to burn to get sun damage. My mum never burns but she's been under one of those UV lamps that detect sun-damaged skin and she's got loads of it.

azazello · 23/05/2010 20:38

YANBU.

Being outside doing things or playing with the children and all slathered in suncream and wearing hats = lots of fun.

Lying on a towel and roasting = headache and sore for days = not fun.

vintage · 23/05/2010 20:38

i saw a woman at the car boot sale today who had obviously been burne to a crisp yesterday she was as Red as a lobster but she was going for day 2 with a skimpy sun top on.Old leathery skin ...why?

venusonarockbun · 23/05/2010 20:38

According to the skin Cancer Foundation both tans and burning are dangerous because both are caused by DNA damage to the skin cells.

venusonarockbun · 23/05/2010 20:39

Tans are not really attractive on most people.

cupcakesandbunting · 23/05/2010 20:42

I think tans are attractive. Melanoma are not so I get my tan out of a spray can

chesgirlNOTgriffins · 23/05/2010 20:52

YANBU

I cant sunbathe. Its boring.

I dont tan anyway. So its pointless. If you dont tan you are just lying about getting hot for no reason.

I was a punky/gothy/hippy type when i was a teen and in my early twenties. So I didnt do outdoors stuff.

I am so glad now. I dont really have many wrinkles/sun damage. Although i regularly burnt to a crisp as a young child so quite a bit of damage had already been done.

I recommend Sublime Bronze if you are pale and not very methodical. Its gives a light glow and its easy to put on.

The most annoying thing about it is that its pronounced Soo bleem.

ifancyashandy · 23/05/2010 20:55

I sunbathe. I am not wrinkly. I use decent sun protection (and moisturiser since I was 11) and tan slooooooowly. Tans are attractive. Sunburn is not.

careergirl · 23/05/2010 22:41

Tans are skin damage I'm afraid. Tans can = melanoma which = not attractive.

ifancyashandy · 23/05/2010 22:44

Agreed - If you're stupid about how you tan. As ever, there are degrees here. It is not about black or white ('scuse the pun)
