about sunbathing?

Asking for trouble here.

Am I the only person who can't think of anything more horrific or unpleasant than lying in the sun, with the sun on you?

I'm not a vampire, for the record, and I understand that some people enjoy the sensation of slowly burning, but I am one of those pale English-rose types that cannot stand being remotely hot and runs for the shade every time the sun pops its cheery head out from behind the cloud.

Am I the only one?

I dont sunbathe, I burn too easily. But, I thought a bit of sun was good for you, the vitaim D, and all that?

PosyPetrovaPauline · 23/05/2010 22:49

careergirl · 23/05/2010 22:49

England is a country where skin cancer is becoming one of the most common cancers.

silverdogflower · 23/05/2010 22:53

Well done OP! YANBU - I loathe the sun and have stayed indoors most of the weekend. Burn easily and get massive headache if too hot. Also feel like can't breathe when the air is warm! I am dead good fun on a hot holiday as you can imagine. Hence we often go to Scandinavia on holiday - warmish and cool breezes which is as much as I want.

minxofmancunia · 23/05/2010 22:59

YANBU, i like fine weather and being out and about but sunbathing is boring and pointless i'd rather be doing stuff, esp on holiday.

must admit I did sit out tonight for a while with a book - favourite part of the day as its cooling off and quite pleasant

booyhoo · 23/05/2010 23:03

i always think the girl on emmerdale with red hair that is very pale has lovely skin, no wrinkles or anything. there must be something in that.

PosyPetrovaPauline · 23/05/2010 23:04

Careergirl - everyone holidays abroad

pissovski · 23/05/2010 23:04

Completely agree with OP! I loathe 'sunbathing'. I am very pale, and burn very easily. When i was little my mum and nan were always trying to get me 'out in the fresh air'. I'd be out about 30 mins then my sneaking in to the coolest room for a read!

FGS - i got sunstroke in Dublin!

ifancyashandy · 23/05/2010 23:12

(whispers) I think only those who can't tan hate tanning....

careergirl · 23/05/2010 23:18

what's attractive about tanned skin - tanned skin is damaged skin you know!

ifancyashandy · 23/05/2010 23:21

Ummm - don't lose your sense of humour, I fear you are taking this too seriously!

It's only 'should or shouldn't I sunbathe'!!

careergirl · 23/05/2010 23:26

I'm allowed to take it seriously. I have been treated for melanoma

ifancyashandy · 23/05/2010 23:27

I'm sorry for that - and I know what it's like to have a serious illness - but you have just got me by stealth.

shockers · 23/05/2010 23:41

I love being out in the sunshine but have to waer floaty tops because I'm fair skinned. The sun is fab though... we spent today on the beach and had a fantastic time in the sea and the rockpools. We just cover up with t shirts.

beanlet · 23/05/2010 23:44

YANBU. I just burn and peel (and go white again) if I'm in the summer sun for more than about 20 minutes -- and I don't want to end up looking like a leather handbag and dying of skin cancer.

I also loathe fake tan; my skin is MEANT to be pale pinky white and I just look ugly brown.

TrappedinSuburbia · 23/05/2010 23:49

I love sunbathing, I close my eyes and imagine im somewhere exotic.....all with my factor 50 on mind you, am really pale and have and intend on staying that way, especially when I see people my age with really bad skin that think its great the more they burn because they'll get a better colour.

MoChan · 24/05/2010 08:24

I hate sunbathing. I find it tedious in the extreme. It takes me seconds to feel uncomfortably hot, and bored. I am pretty good at day-dreaming, but I can never do it whilst lying in the sun feeling hot and dizzy. Plus, if I try to read a book, the glare from the pages just hurts my eyes and I can't concentrate. Yuck. Much rather stay active or go indoors/beneath some shade to read, or whatever.

Species8472 · 24/05/2010 08:30

YADNBU.

I hate it. I like sitting in the shade, am not bothered in the slightest about getting a tan and hate the idea that a holiday must be judged by how 'good' your tan is. Sunbathing is just tedious, sticky and uncomfortable, not to say very bad for your skin. And don't get me started on sun-cream - smelly, sticky, yuck.

MrsC2010 · 24/05/2010 08:31

I don't get sunbathing, I get bored within about 2 mins and get too hot. If I could read it would be easier, but you're in the sun and it's so bright, and you can't read in a normal position cause otherwise you screw up your sun damage tan.

I am naturally pale and freckly, but I do get a tan after sunstained exposure. I always used to do a lot of watersports and catch the sun that way which can't really be helped, but would never purposely go out looking for a tan. It's skin damage, and is no more attractive than well looked after pale skin. If anything, the latter is more attractive than a perma-tan or those wrinkles people get after yrs of tanning.

frostyfingers · 24/05/2010 08:34

I don't like sunbathing as such - lying out frying in the sun doesn't do it for me. However, I feel much happier with a bit of a tan, so will sit in shade, with my factor 50 on for a while and get a bit of colour that way. I don't do mahogany, and agree that overdoing it is so bad for you, but with care a bit of sun is fine.

What I can't understand is those people who let themselves get burnt to a crisp, and then wander around with it on display, burning some more. Ouch!
