about sunbathing?

Asking for trouble here.

Am I the only person who can't think of anything more horrific or unpleasant than lying in the sun, with the sun on you?

I'm not a vampire, for the record, and I understand that some people enjoy the sensation of slowly burning, but I am one of those pale English-rose types that cannot stand being remotely hot and runs for the shade every time the sun pops its cheery head out from behind the cloud.

Am I the only one?

YANBU

When younger, I used to do this only to a tan.

Now I realise that life is too short to do something that I don't enjoy/doesn't last long [the tan]/will make me look older when I am 45+/potentially give me skin cancer.

I smugly put on my factor 30 yesterday when I was doing the gardening, I still got some colour (I tan easily) but not even a hint of red.. Definately no lying around!

However, some people do seem to genuinely enjoy it...

Normality - I'm so sorry.

You are right. I had a carcinoma (easily dealt with) but at the time I had real issues getting gps and then the consultant to take it seriously. I was right - it was. Even after the even one consultant took one look at me and reckoned the early diagnosis was wrong - they had another look at the biopsy (some 3 years later) and it still was.

Enjoy the sun - I love it - but enjoy it safely. Sunbathing is not being safe in the sun.

I know I harp on but we're an ageing population so the incident of it is bound to go up.

I have naturally brown skin and am tired of people, from shop assistants, to the builders next door, and neighbours saying "oooh, bet you like this weather don't you"?! Well. Actually. No. I don't like the heat and whilst you may think I put on a grass skirt and start hula-hooping around the garden, I'd rather sit in the shade.

More than 5 mins in the sun and I am BOILING. My skin gets rashy and I sweat! Much prefer temp in the early 70's when you can walk around without fear of fainting.

To sit in the sun for hours - a sit down yes, in direct sun - noooooooo.

I said I didn't sunbathe at noon... and I am of advancing years (never gonna see 20 again. Or 30. Or 40. sob) and like I said earlier, I always use a high protection and reapply regularly. I didn't have long hot beach holidays when I was a kid (parents more of the 'lets go and visit churches in Yorkshire variety!) so didn't start beach holidaying till I was in my 20's, meaning my skin wasn't exposed at a young age.

I'll repeat it - I am VERY careful and seeing as though I am not trying to convince anyone that my way is the only way, each to their own on this one, surely?!

Personally not a 'sunbather' but do sit in the garden or down beach at park etc with DS 5. Usually meet friends so good chance to chat while LO are amused.

Always have cream, hat, sunnies and a umbrella.
