To not understand how a doctor could miss a toilet brush handle lodged in someone's bottom?

I've read the article here but don't understand how this could have been missed for two years.
Can anyone shed any light for me?

poor woman!

SolidGoldBrass · 20/05/2010 01:57

Was the patient maybe complaining of tonsilitis?

toccatanfudge · 20/05/2010 01:59

bbc report here

autodidact · 20/05/2010 06:23

How dreadful. And very odd.

OrganicHairbrush · 20/05/2010 08:42

There must be more to this than is being reported.

But I'll steer well clear of my toilet brush whenever I've had too much to drink...

marcsalmond · 20/05/2010 08:43

this story made me feel sick yesterday, i don't believe anyone could not notice a foreign body in their arse really

StealthPolarBear · 20/05/2010 08:44

ok not a funny thread as i thought
poor woman

OldMacEIEIO · 20/05/2010 09:33

A friend is a paramedic and some of the stories are eye-watering.
With drunken males it usually involves vacuum cleaners or glass in ass
females, glass in..well,

and photo-copier companies have introduced hefty charges for every female bum that goes through the platting glass on copiers at the Christmas office party

allegedly

BritFish · 20/05/2010 10:27

i dont think this story is right at all, there's something else going on here. how could she go abouther daily life for two years with that stuck in her? she couldnt! if he examined her externally and took an x-ray nd found nothing, where the devil was it? this sort of injury sounds like youd e unable to lie or sit down? something not right.

OldMacEIEIO · 20/05/2010 10:32

Britfish, I dont think she did sit or lie down.
As I understand it, the family used to stand her in a Showerlux Cirq Wall Mounted Toilet Brush Holder overnight

ticktockclock · 20/05/2010 10:38

Ummmmmmm Alright then! Don't know what else to say!

bumpybecky · 20/05/2010 10:42

I saw another thread on here yesterday and a MNer was a friend of this lady

This isn't one of those drunk person messing about / being rude stories. It sounds like it was a freak accident that went misdiagnosed

Poor lady and poor family for having to put up with the 'jokes'

gtamom · 20/05/2010 10:48

More information here. Poor woman, glad her dh is suing them.

suitejudyblue · 20/05/2010 10:55

thanks for the link gtamom, I did hear this on the radio yesterday and wondered what on earth could have happened.
It all sounds like a complete disaster at the hospital but how strange that the conclusion to the article is that its a reason for America not to have free health care, are they really so deluded ?

OldMacEIEIO · 20/05/2010 11:24

It's not really so deluded suitejudy. It's the same argument as saying that this would never have happened under BUPA

I am sure if we looked hard enough we could show this to be untrue

BritFish · 20/05/2010 11:45

so it was embedded in her bottom. if it was embedded in the cheek, you would be able to SEE it. skin doesnt just close up over that kind of injury!
sorry, i think this has been misreported, cant have been two years, she'd have been unable to about her life, and a doctor would be able to SEE IT EMBEDDED IN HER BUM. im pretty sure she would have been able to get a doctor to just cast an eye over her arse. and she must have been to more than one doctor if the first one was blind and couldnt see the bloody loobrush embedded in her?!??? this has to have been seriously misreported.

"It has to be true because I saw it in the Daily Mail"

toccatanfudge · 20/05/2010 13:45

organic - was on the BBC as well - see my link.....

swanandduck · 20/05/2010 13:49

It wasn't the whole brush, a six inch piece of it became embedded in her flesh, travelled to her pelvis and that's how she died. There's a discussion about it on the news forum.

swanandduck · 20/05/2010 13:55

Oh, and I also think some of the sniggering remarks made by people about the incident are awful. Imagine if you were her husband, child or sister and knew that your tragedy was just a bit of a laugh for other people.

BalloonSlayer · 20/05/2010 14:15

OK well someone I know, fell through a greenhouse. She had a lot of glass in the cheeks of her bottom - but she was lucky it wasn't worse. Had to go to hospital, the glass was picked out, she was X-rayed to check there wasn't any more and stitched up.

She recovered from her accident but always suffered from odd pains in her Butt. Ock. (as Forrest Gump would say).

She persisted in going to the Doctors about it. Eventually she was sent back to the hospital for another X-ray in a clear act of: "Lets shut the silly bitch up then shall we?"

The radiographer noted that the X-ray she had been given before was the kind of X-ray you have if they suspect you have broken bones; whereas if you are looking for lingering glass a Soft Tissue X-ray is required. Radiographer therefore did a Soft Tissue X-Ray. Found a 4" piece of glass inside her back heading towards her spine. One heavy fall on her arse in the snow could have left her paralysed.

Long complicated op later, all was fine. Hospital rather embarrassed.

I expect this is a similar case.

What on earth were you thinking with that post? If you were trying to show how "witty" you can be with such a clever response you failed. Shame on you oldmac
