popped into local "convenience" store earlier today.

Long queue as always, which is directed along the aisle that is packed with crisps, chocolate & sweets.

More sweets & chocolates at till points.

DS (2.5 yrs) fed up of continuously being told "NO" he couldnt have any sweets/chocolate/crisps then proceeded to chuck about 10 Mars Bars on the floor whilst I packed & paid for my shopping at the till.

In protest at having to queue in the said aisle I left them all on the floor & walked out the store.

so AIBU

I think I might be an Indigo Adult

Differentname, I do not let my toddler grab biscuits etc off the shelves. I make sure she can't reach them from the trolley. But, as I wrote, when I go through the checkout it is arranged so that there is no way I can stop her from reaching them. The whole time I am putting my shopping out and paying she can grab them. I can't really see what I can or should do about this. And so, instead of feeling 'fucked' by the supermarket I just ignore it and decide it is not my problem.

As for the supermarket workers, well it is not that unusual for workers in any industry to be screwed by the decisions of their management. Dh has been working late for the past two weeks because of other people's screw ups and decisions.

cupcakesandbunting · 21/05/2010 10:56

Do your children all have those go-go Inspector Gadget arms because my DS can't reach the sweets from the bit where you do your packing/paying

tryingtoleave · 21/05/2010 11:13

No, that is dh. At our supermarket the checkout aisles are only the width of a trolley. There is no room to move the trolley at all.

cupcakesandbunting · 21/05/2010 11:17

I push my trolley right to the end so that it is completely out of the checkout aisle and face it sideways on IYKWIM.

OldMacEIEIO · 21/05/2010 11:20

cupcakes
i am so not your friend

cupcakesandbunting · 21/05/2010 11:22

Fine. Face, bothered etc.

(How come? Just out of interest? )

OldMacEIEIO · 21/05/2010 11:24

because I read all that stuff about being bent over and fcked like a commercial whore, so I rushed round to Tescos, and alls I got was a bag of pistachios

cupcakesandbunting · 21/05/2010 11:26

You weren't looking hard enough. You should have tried right by the checkouts...

tryingtoleave · 21/05/2010 11:48

I do see, but I'm still stuck there while I offload the shopping. Anyway, my point is that the sweets are deliberately displayed where children can grab them so the children do grab them. I'm just not going to succumb to the supermarket's strategy by actually buying them and I'm not going to get stressed about them chucking them.

cupcakesandbunting · 21/05/2010 12:05

MY DS (3yrs) gets right pissed off that I won't let him buy fags when we go to the newsagents. Why do they have to put them behind the counter on full display? I do wish they'd do a nice fruit display there instead. I'd much rather he cried for a nice satsuma instead of twenty Camels.

tryingtoleave · 21/05/2010 12:38

But he can't reach them!

cupcakesandbunting · 21/05/2010 13:31

He can. He's got go-go gadget arms.

boardgames · 21/05/2010 23:02

YANBU - putting sweets within a 3 year old's reach is cynical exploitation of pester power.

Although, it would have been kinder to the shop staff to have picked them up.

AliceAyers · 22/05/2010 10:09

Yes Topsy,

OP did come back and accept everyone's comments with good grace and humour iirc.

I myself did not make any comment, as I don't have children of my own, and should therefore 'just STFU' about any matters regarding kids (AIBU passim).

CheekyPinkSox · 22/05/2010 11:18

Hmm YABU i would have picked them up. My 2yr old & 3.5 yr olds are completely different to some kids i see in shops crying because they want sweets. My boys will maybe ask for a choc choc and if i say 'No' they know i mean 'no'. When i say 'No' they dont throw things on the floor they just sulk at the side of the trolley or what ever. I am quite glad that they dont tantrum whenever we say no.
