I have just received a letter from the council threatening me with prison
I currently receive single person's discount on my council tax. However I can't afford the mortgage so I am moving in with my mum who also gets the single person's discount.
I contacted the council about 8 weeks ago (ok maybe it was 7 and a half) to explain the situation, I thought I had been clear. I gave them the moving date and explained that as of this date I would no longer be responsible for the council tax at this address (managed not to swear when they got huffy about me not knowing the date of birth of the buyer). I also made it clear that as of the same date my mum's council tax should no longer have the single person's discount applied. They assured me this would all be sorted. This letter says that as of June they are sending investigators at several random times to prove I am defrauding them out of single persons discount. They will then "contact the police in order to start fraud procedings against me" I informed them of the change FFS, how exactly am I commiting fraud?
Sorry folks had to let off steam, fed up with being batted down at every turn and made to feel like a comlete failure.
