to want to take my sons to the ballet?

Last Christmas I took DD to see Sleeping Beauty. She loved it, and I have to say that I enjoyed it too! DH said that "ballet was for girls" and took both boys to the panto instead.

This year it is Swan Lake. I think that the boys will actually enjoy it, and would like us all to go as a family. However DH still says that it is "for girls".

The boys will be 6 and 8, and they enjoy going to the theatre. DD is 4.

AIBU to think that we could go to the ballet as a family?

If your DH insists on saying it's for girls, then that's all it will ever be in the eyes of your sons, which is a shame

LetThereBeRock · 13/05/2010 17:53

YANBU.Your dh is being ridiculous,to put it politely.

AndieWalsh · 13/05/2010 17:54

Show him some clips of Carlos Acosta. He's far from girly

pjmama · 13/05/2010 17:55

Tell your DH to stop being a pillock and book the tickets!

I took ds1 to the ballet first when he was about 7. He loved it.

ds2's never been though. He said it's "too girly".

He was invited though.

Wow, cultural events aren't for boys then? All across Europe, children are taken to the ballet, classical music concerts, out for dinner in the evenings with dancing displays and so on. Only in the UK would going to see Sleeping Beauty be considered a girls thing...

So, YANBU!!!!!!!

I took ds to the Nutcracker when he was 8. He loved it.

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 13/05/2010 18:05

Go.

Your DH is a plank.

He would probably faint if he knew by 2 boys went to a ballet lesson today.

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 13/05/2010 18:07

You take all your children and leave the baby at home .

helyg · 13/05/2010 18:20

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

And trefusis you have given me my trump card argument... DD is going to her first rugby international next month. I am a huge rugby fan and DH wouldn't dare suggest that girls shouldn't watch rugby. So there is no reason why the boys shouldn't go to the ballet, is there?

Do you think it's your DH who doesn't want to go to the ballet, and his DSs make a good excuse for him not to go .

electra · 13/05/2010 18:47

YANBU at all. Tell your dh to keep his sexist claptrap to himself!

helyg · 13/05/2010 18:51

cretaceous I think you've hit the nail on the head.

However, I have to go to see Status Quo every bloody year because he likes them, so I think he should have to sit through ballet!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 13/05/2010 18:52

Took DS to the Nutcracker when he was 7 and he loved it, and was quite blown away by how high the ballet boys could jump.

It is a shame your DH is not letting them try different things and is stereotyping their lives for them.

Cretaceous · 13/05/2010 18:53

Well said, and so he should go . I take my DS to these sort of things, as I hate stereotyping... and he sits there yawning. Must be in his genes!

Chandon · 13/05/2010 19:00

yanbu only if you´ll take your DD to a football match one day too.

yanbu

I took ds1 to see The Snowman at christmas & he loved it. He even told dh that night that he wanted to be a ballet dancer.

Cue my look when dh said that boys don't do ballet dancing!!

ifancyashandy · 13/05/2010 19:48

Has your OH seen the muscles on some of the male dancers?! Flippin' nora, they can pick a girl up and carry her across the floor ABOVE THIER HEADS and make it look easy. That ain't no feak and weeble fella!

And YY to Carlos Acosta PHWOH!

tryingtobemarrypoppins2 · 13/05/2010 19:56

www.new-adventures.net/

A must see for any boy or girl!!

helyg · 13/05/2010 20:09

chandon did you see my post about DD going to her first rugby international?

I think I may have worn him down won him over. It may have been a litte naughty to show the boys ballet clips on youtube (having carefully chosen the bits with swarthy looking baddies swooshing cloaks around in a v. masculine manner) and then telling them about the very nice ice cream flavours available in the interval... anyway, they both want to go and so DH is outvoted

OP are your boys interested in going? If so I would take them.
