to agree that Twilight has set feminism back by 10 years?

i loved Buffy, ended up having to buy all the series on DVD despite being in my 30's! Buffy was a strong female kick ass kinda girl. i loved the series, the characters. i got totally hooked along with the whole family. i felt sort of lost when we got to the finale.

so it was with interest i watched Twilight and New Moon with my teenage dd....

now i can sort of understand why women like the twilight thing....all dark and brooding, but purlease....does Bella really need 'protecting' by a vampire and werewolf who fight over her? while she sits and simpers?

id rather DD watch buffy.

I kinda like them.

BUT. It's just a story, and no I don't approve of Bella, and no they're not better than Buffy! But what is?

skihorse · 13/05/2010 07:33

YANBU.

Can you imagine Buffy's response to waking up finding Spike "watching over her" as she sleeps?

CagedBird · 13/05/2010 07:35

YANBU great post Britfish, nothing else to add except I can't believe teachers feel it is acceptable to teach at school. Unless they are using it in a pshe kind of way of how not to have a relationship. I literally could not read past bella's depression in Twilight. It is utter tosh

Grandhighpoohba · 13/05/2010 07:43

Agree with Britfish. Would add - dont have sex - you will get pregnant and you will die.

That if you get to close to your man when he is angry, he will lash out and you will be scarred for life, but hey you shouldn't have been near him when he was angry, thays the price you pay for love and as long as he feels sorry later thats ok.

Dreadful books.

cory · 13/05/2010 07:48

I think it's turning dd into even more of a feminist as she is totally freaked out by the concept of clinging girl who doesn't Do Anything.

BouncingTurtle · 13/05/2010 07:51

YANBU!

Ski - when Angel lost his soul and left creepy pictures on Buffy's bed of her and her mom sleeping, she went absolutely batshit and tried to storm off to kill him.

Bella is a twit. Buffy rules!

maamalady · 13/05/2010 07:59

YANBU, Twilight is awful from a feminist point of view. However it is great fun to take the piss out of (in an affectionate way - much as I disparage the writing and the story, I was still hooked), and the fanfic is doing its best to remove the "chaste" label...

maamalady · 13/05/2010 08:00

PS I LOVE Buffy!

TheFoosa · 13/05/2010 08:30

Every female I have spoken to about Twilight are only reading them because of R-Patz

my teenage niece & her friends all think Bella is a whiny wimp, certainly no role model

AstronomyDomine · 13/05/2010 08:35

Blimey - it's just a book. Read it for its own sake rather than dissecting every single thing.
Some ladies think too much

lisianthus · 13/05/2010 08:46

Great link, tweetymum.

I particularly liked the part where Edward was trying to pull the brooding, dangerous stalky vampire stuff on Buffy and she responds "What, are you twelve?"

I have read all the comments and as much as I know I should despise Twilight, book is badly written etc etc etc.... but I have to admit I think Bella is quite cool and I would sell my kids into slavery for just one shag with RPatz.

lucykate · 13/05/2010 12:37

haven't read the books as didn't think they are my cup of tea, watched twilight accidentally as it was on while i was babysitting for a friend one night, quite liked twilight actually, despite bella being so, well, meh is about all i can think of to describe her. then watched new moon, awful tripe, terrible storyline, bella's character has gone from bad to worse (and as an aside, what happened to jasper's hair!).

i think one of the problems with bella, is she's up against the other female characters of alice, rosalee, esme and victoria, all really strong women, which highlights all of bella's weakness.

ThatVikRinA22 · 13/05/2010 12:50

im going to ask DD what she thought of it and the message it gives, have to admit when we watched it i didnt give a massive amount of thought to it, other than it annoyed me.

Hadnt thought about it being an "abusive" relationship, but have to say if Bella had been mine id have bloody jumped state to get her away from the creepy bloke. Her dad is ineffective and her mother is where???

i think its time to dig out the Buffy DVDs again. I think DD needs to see how a girl should behave when faced with vampire boys, obviously, for when the event arises

YANBU.

It's badly written shite, but it's influential depressing, anti-feminist, badly written shite.

I shudder to think of the millions of teenage girls all absorbing the central messages. It tells them that they are nothing without a man, that men prefer passive, weak women (Bella can't even fucking walk straight, forever stumbling over) and that ultimately it's all about self-sacrifice to be worthy of him. Bella, in the end, is quite happy to be killed for Edward. Jesus wept.

I know that teenagers aren't stupid, but they are impressionable, and it just winds me up to think that they are buying into this crap.

Downdog · 13/05/2010 12:53

I've not seen the film but read Twilight recently.

I was shocked at what a pathetic, moody, sulky cow Bella is!!! FFS she's a nighmare but everyone is fascinated with her. And how come she gets the hunky rich vampire while I languish here without one?

Still I did enjoy the book - Meyer has the ability to make the reader feel all teenage again - which is why I suspect the books have been a huge hit with older readers.

I have been told that Bella does become less of a total pain in the neck in later books & have just started to read New Moon.

But really what I really really want to read is more Steig Larsson. Now Lisbeth Salander is a female characher of wonder - and she really does have something to be moody about. Praying the rumour of 4th novel is true.

GetOrfMoiLand · 13/05/2010 12:56

Britfish, brilliant post. You have summed up exactly what I think about those hideous books.

I think Edward is a textbook case of someone who is passive agressive and narcissist personality disorder.

It is awful, but I was compelled to read them. Mind you, I have not read the last book, onlu the first 3. Can someone tell me what happens in the end?

Stupid bloody vampires and werewolves. Bella is a twat.

Oh come on, it's (nearly) every young girl's dream to have some drop dead gorgeous guy (and they don't get much better than R Pattz) worshipping at their feet. It's the passion of first love it's a not a manifesto for the way women should live their lives.

Tidey · 13/05/2010 14:18

Rofl at Bella calling the baby her 'little nudger', one of my friends uses that as a penis euphemism
