Please tell me that I am NOT being a stuck up cow?

Do you often find that when you drive past someone else who has the same type of car as you, that they give a little wave?

I sort of get it (it's a friendly type of camerarderie thing to do) but sometimes it gets on my wick and I don't always wave back.

Actually, if I'm honest, I think that it is a bit of a nobby thing to do

So today, I passed someone in same car who gave a massive over the top wave and I just drove past ignoring him, at which point he turned round at the roundabout behind me and followed me into the supermarket carpark.

He got out of his car and came up to me as I was getting my trolley and asked me what my problem was [cross]

I only drive a Skoda for f' sake!!! It's not like we are members of an elitist club or am I missing an unspoken rule of the road.

So is he being a knob or am I being 'a stuck up cow' (his words!)?

Is this a particularly 'British' thing to do?

Erm, thats an odd thing to do - no-one has ever waved ta me for that reason!

BunnyLebowski · 11/05/2010 15:16

He sounds like a total whackjob.

I would do the same as you tbh. That waving thing sounds like a horrible American type phenomenon.

Floopy21 · 11/05/2010 15:17

He's weird. You're normal & NBU. Gavel!

ChippingIn · 11/05/2010 15:18

I'm with you - I don't really get it, unless it's a very unusual car/vehicle or has markings (ie company vehicle) - even then I'm a bit but hey-ho I'll go along with it, it's harmless...

This weirdo today is completely bonkers - maybe you should have taken his reg and reported him.... very, very odd.

Thingiebob · 11/05/2010 15:18

You are not being a stuck up cow. You don't have to wave back! And actually following you and confronting you is very weird and I should imagine a bit scary.

GetOrfMoiLand · 11/05/2010 15:19

That is really strange.

My XP used to own a very rare car and if you ever saw anyone on the road in the same car (very rare) they would both wet themselves with excitement and wave.

Not a bloody skoda though. Christ.

LaurieFecktheToriesCake · 11/05/2010 15:20

Nope, when I had a Mini people did this and when i had a rare sports car people did.

So yes unfortunately you're being a wee bit of a nob - you should have told him you didn't notice

If it's a modern Skoda then you're not being weird - it's classic car drivers that do this not Octavia(or whatever) drivers who do.

McDreamy · 11/05/2010 15:21

Flippen heck I'm glad this isn't the norm. I have a very common popular car! I would be FOREVER waving!

ConnorTraceptive · 11/05/2010 15:22

people who drive the same car as me usually give a sympathetic 'I feel your pain' wave

EnchantedWithGordon · 11/05/2010 15:22

Hahaha, I get giddy when I see someone with the same breed of dog as me, does that count?

He sounds like a nutter tho!

ASecretLemonadeDrinkerDAVE · 11/05/2010 15:23

Ha ha ha! What a weirdo! My sister used to get in her classic beetle, and my DH sometimes in his rare classic cars but a bloody Skoda! (no offence)

ButterPie · 11/05/2010 15:24

I still sometimes wave at motorbikes by accident, I've not had one for four years, and even then it was shit. I liked the waving though

babywalks · 11/05/2010 15:26

I have never heard of this waving thing happening?!

The guy sounds like a whack-job, I mean to actually follow someone into a carpark and ask them what their problem is just for not acknowledging that you have the same car as them??? Total crack-pot, I hope you told him where to go.

CornishKK · 11/05/2010 15:26

The only time that has happened to me is on a Harley in the states and in a little limited edition mini I used to drive when I was 18, i.e. something a bit special!

Can you imagine if you were supposed to wave at every Ford Focus or every Peugot 306 that you saw.

The man is insane, YANBU, just normal.

Although I think Skoda Octavia drivers ARE an elite club. We have just exchanged our sporty pre-children number for a big, green estate Ninky Nonk. I'm so middle-aged I love it.

hogshead · 11/05/2010 15:27

tis the secret law of campervan/motorhomes - if you drive a camper van you MUST wave to any other passing camper van or motor home. Even if they are in the slow lane on the opposite carriageway of a motorway.

Under NO cicumstances should you be foolish enough to wave to a `tugger'

hogshead · 11/05/2010 15:28

circumstances even!

BettySuarez · 11/05/2010 15:28

Its a Skoda Fabia - we both had the same/similar colour but hells bells, I still aint waving!

Come to think of it, I used to drive a Beetle (back in my hey day) and would wave back on occassion (although would never initiate wave)

Very odd if you ask me.

whatwasthatagain · 11/05/2010 15:28

How would you have known he was waving at you because of the car? Agree, very unusual/vintage cars tend to elicit a nod of camaraderie, but a Skoda? And to drive after you. Sounds like a real oddball.

dinkystinky · 11/05/2010 15:28

When we had a mini, on out of the way places, other mini drivers would wave to us. Then they became ubiquitous and it stopped. I never instituted the waving thing as found it abit odd but if I was waved at would wave back.

Never heard of it with skodas though!

BettySuarez · 11/05/2010 15:29

hogshead - what pray is a 'tugger'?

OP posts:
hogshead · 11/05/2010 15:30

i have never heard of waving to other cars though

UnrequitedSkink · 11/05/2010 15:30

LOL at ConnorTraceptive though!

I had a little old red Renault 4 and was driving down a quiet country lane once when a blue renault 4 on the other side started flashing its lights, and all 4 passengers rolled down their windows, leaned out and waved joyously at me! Tickled me for ages

hogshead · 11/05/2010 15:31

a `tugger' is what us campervan drivers call caravans

lovechoc · 11/05/2010 15:31

have never heard of this and I also own a Skoda! I love my car, it has v boring interior but nippy!

will defo keep an eye out for people waving when they have the same model as myself.

is this a new trend?

choccyp1g · 11/05/2010 15:32

I once overtook a car on the motorway with the exact same numberplate bar one digit. Both cars got very excited and I still remember the waving and light flashing fun 25 years on. However, driving a Ford Focus, if you did it for makes of car, I'd have to have my hazards winking almost permanently.
