DH informed me that he's a bit concerned that I give out far too much info about myself online.

My stance is that this site is huge and I don't post much - though read all the chuffing time regularly - and I'd be amazed if anyone could dredge up the most trivial information about me let alone identify me in real life.

He thinks not. He thinks that if you post even semi-regularly people will have a "profile" of you fairly quickly, which leaves you vulnerable. Further, he claims that a cursory search will basically make it blindingly obvious who I am and I might as well post up my address and a picture of my tits for good measure.

Obviously with some posters I see their name and think, "Oh it's X. Lives in Devon, is a nurse, is quite funny and always pitches in on BF threads" but for the most part while I recognise names I couldn't really come up with concrete information on their owners.

So, out of paranoia curiousity - what's your mental profile of me when you see my name:

a) Off the top your head
b) With a quick search

Clearly, I am expecting (and hoping!) that the answer will be, "nothing, who the fuck are you?"

I'd be very happy to do it for you in return, btw, should you so desire!

Tbh I do recognise your user name but other than that I couldn't tell you anything about yourself.

BessieBoots · 10/05/2010 15:01

Absolutely nothing!

diddl · 10/05/2010 15:02

I´ve seen your user name before!

memoo · 10/05/2010 15:02

I can't say I've ever noticed your name before. MN is huge!!!

BecauseIAgreeWithGordon · 10/05/2010 15:02

Nope. Sorry, don't recognise your name at all.

(Haven't done a search though)

3cats3dogs · 10/05/2010 15:03

I recognise your name, but no details spring to mind, not enough to drum up a mental image - sorry!

My dh has been on to me about this too, and I suspect that someone I know well in RL may recognise me, but probably not - as you say, it's a huge site, and lots of people share similar experiences.

YouKnowNothingofMyVote · 10/05/2010 15:03

a) Vaguely recognise the name but don't know anything about you (sorry!)
b) Brief search reveals you like AIBU threads and Style and Beauty (but I'm not looking at anything in detail so I couldn't say whether you've put up too much info), it also seemed opinion-based rather than personal-detail based.

I recognise your name and have definately "seen" you on lots of posts but tbh I don't rememeber anything about you. I'm terrible for remembering which poster wrote what!

I even had a blazing row with a poster a few weeks back and can't for the life of me remember who they were now, which will look odd if I post on a thread with them again.

thumbwitch · 10/05/2010 15:05

I don't instantly recognise your posting name although I am pretty sure I have seen it before but I couldn't tell you when or where. So, effectively, I know nothing about you.

I am shockingly bad at giving out too much info, to the extent that another poster has recognised me from RL but won't tell me who she is, because she is more paranoid canny than I am!

NoahAndTheWhale · 10/05/2010 15:07

I think I have seen your name before but that is all I can remember.

whatwasthatagain · 10/05/2010 15:07

Recognise your name but wouldn't have a clue about you. The only person I feel I know anything about is pagwatch following her green car thread in which lots of people referred to her house so I had a look at her pics. And lots of people confessed to envying her. I tend to notice her responses to things now, and am myself a little envious of how measured she is. But no, you are perfectly safe, with me anyway

scurryfunge · 10/05/2010 15:08

I know all your PIN numbers and what you had for breakfast ......just joking, nothing

deaddei · 10/05/2010 15:09

Don't recognise your name either.

Downdog · 10/05/2010 15:14

I'll be going through your recycling on Wednesday.

Seriously I really don't know you or anyone else on here for that matter. It helps to be anonymous & indifferent when all the stinging arrows come flying from other MN'ers!

I have also noticed some MN'ers seem to change their name quite regularly - prob about time I did the same.

notanumber · 10/05/2010 15:15

This is looking good! Am hugely reassured as DH had me convinced that you all had cameras trained on my house loads of information on me and that I was nowhere near as invisible as I had been happily assuming!

Having just done a search I now know you believe in faithful committed relationships and freedom of speech. At least that's what I've interpreted from some of the threads you posted on but nothing that could identify you in real life.

CheekyRedWineGirl · 10/05/2010 15:15

I love this forum, although i am use to (dont judge me ) but im use to Signatures, and that for me helps me recognise the poster more lol

Rockbird · 10/05/2010 15:16

There are far far far too many people on here to remember personal details about 99% of them. I could put together a brief biog for about 2 MNetters but that's it. Mostly, I absorb enough info to contribute to a thread and then forget it all, like exams!

notanumber · 10/05/2010 15:16

Downdog, how do you know my recycling collection is on Wednesdays, hmm?

Psammead · 10/05/2010 15:17

Like most others, have seen your name around, but know nothing about you.

seeker · 10/05/2010 15:17

Vulnerable to what, for heaven's sake?

Hassled · 10/05/2010 15:18

Another one who recognises your name in a sort of positive way but other than that, nothing. Will search.

RunforFun · 10/05/2010 15:20

I've seen your name around but cant think of anything that stands out.

I worry about this a bit and thats the reason I'm a regular namechanger

I'd love all messages to be deleted after a certain time period line in chat, but thats maybe just me !

Hassled · 10/05/2010 15:22

OK, you work in or at least have some knowledge of working in education, you have strong opinions re Jan Moir/Gately and you live in a ground floor maisonette.
