Only a little one, you understand. You know, about 32 ft or so.

Dh been sailing with guys from work over the weekend (one of them has a skippers ticket and they rented a boat), just in case people think I move in those kind of circles, )

So anyway I love sailing, and dh was telling me about the yachts for sale they'd seen. We could afford one, really we could. If we re-mortgaged the house.

And given we don't have a car it could be like buying a new car. And it wouldn't be as expensive in the long-run because well a yacht would be a one-off purchase, unlike a car - you wouldn't say every few years "I really need to buy a new yacht." like you might with a car.

Dh says no.

I think he's being mean.

So ibu?

YANBU. I am assuming that you will be taking your yacht to work? And you could do the school run in your yacht. And probably you don't get parking tickets, in yachts.

So really, it is a Very Sensible purchase and your husband just has No Imagination.

Psammead · 10/05/2010 11:57

AND you could go on holiday with it and save on airfare, and at the same time contribute to Saving the Environment.

YANBatallU

Make him buy me one too, please.

belgo · 10/05/2010 11:58

YANBU.

Just move to Venice and then you can use it to go shopping.

Doodleydoo · 10/05/2010 11:59

Not in the slightest! Besides if you got bored of your neighbours then you could set off on your yacht and live there .

I also think your dh is being a bit mean!

My dh however has told me we could sell our house and live in a ferrari (2 x dc and a cat!) which I thought was a little unreasonable but hasn't been put completely our of the question - it just depends what happens to fuel costs...........not something you have to worry about too much with a yacht. YABU if you expect him to buy you a power boat though as they aren't very environmentally friendly and don't use reusable energy - a bit like a ferrari!

AgentZigzag · 10/05/2010 11:59

I think he's being a total cad, how dare he try to oppress you in this way.

Divorce him, take his money, and you buy yourself that yacht. You deserve it

lilmissmummy · 10/05/2010 12:01

YANBU everyone who is anyone has a yacht doesn't he know that?!

I am obviously going to get one for Christmas!

In fact you would be saving money by sailing to France and buying good wine for Christmas presents so maybe you should get 2?

AgentZigzag · 10/05/2010 12:01

Oh, imagine the envious looks you'd get rocking up to the school gates in that!

azazello · 10/05/2010 12:05

YANBU at all everyone should have one.

BUT, we used to have one (17ft, wee in a bucket, couldn't stand up in it etc) pre-DCs and it took over our lives completely. If we weren't actually sailing it, we were faffing around varnishing/ repairing/ cuddling/ buying bits of tat very important stuff to put on it. It ended up costing a fortune.

AbsOfCroissant · 10/05/2010 12:08

YANBU but of course you know this.

Tell him to buy you a yacht already, and I'll come sailing with you. As long as it's somewhere warm, and all I have to do is lay about on deck drinking beers.

Psammead · 10/05/2010 12:08

Doodleydoo What you need is one of these

PatriciaHolm · 10/05/2010 12:46

Hmm..not that unreasonable. However, the ILs have one - a 42footer - and it's not a one-off investment! Every year it has be hauled out of the sea, resealed, then harboured for the winter, etc etc. You'd need to mortgage the house and sell DH, and then who would sail it with you?

Doodleydoo · 11/05/2010 09:52

Psammead I have been quite keen on that -much nicer than our house on the inside!!!!

But I think a little more expensive! Love it though especially where you can put the car!

SecretPollingBooth · 11/05/2010 09:55

yabu in only wanting a little yacht - get a big one!

OurLadyOfPerpetualSupper · 11/05/2010 10:01

My DH was hankering after a floating caravan yacht for years, but someone recently told him the most exciting and pleasurable things about yacht ownership are the day you buy it and the day you sell it.

VoulezVouzCrochezAvecJACK · 11/05/2010 10:03

YABU, Yachtists are so up their own bums.

ROund here they are known as Wind Assisted Farking Idiot's

Get a boat with an engine, then you can play even when it's not windy....

bruffin · 11/05/2010 10:07

YANBU
DH is involved in yacht building and I do really think he should be able to borrow one so we can have a nice holiday on one.
