to not like the shop assistant handling the loose sweets my son and I chose?

My son and I chose some loose "Pick & Mix" type sweets today (a rare treat, not a daily thing!)in the local newsagents. They were the kind with no wrapping on, not my first choice generally but my son had made his decision!

He chose four, I chose two. We went to pay, told the shop assistant there were six in the bag (which could easily be seen through the bag anyway) yet he then opened the bag and handled a couple of the sweets to count them! We use that shop almost daily so the staff know us to an extent, hopefully it's pretty obvious that we're an honest family! As I said though, he could have counted them without even opening the bag anyway!

I was tempted to ask to choose a replacement bag of sweets, but I bit my lip...now I wish I had said more than the polite "I'd prefer them not touched" that I actually said after he had already manhandled two of the sweets.... What would you have done or said? Or indeed thought?

you are overthinking this

scrotey little rugrats children will have touched them a hundred times

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 06/05/2010 14:31

YABU for only allowing your son four sweets for a rare treat.

And two for you...blimey...

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 06/05/2010 14:31

plus...what Laurie said...

SalFresco · 06/05/2010 15:03

Wouldn't bother me. I wouldn't have even said that much, tbh.

minipie · 06/05/2010 15:22

Really wouldn't have bothered me. Kids are exposed to far worse.

Firawla · 06/05/2010 15:28

yanbu but i think what you said was fine, any more would have been overkill
maybe other children could have touched them but what you dont see doesnt hurt you, to have someone ruffle through it right infront of you is off putting

myrubicon · 06/05/2010 15:31

YABU

Downdog · 06/05/2010 15:37

YABU - so many of us grew up with the shopkeepers counting out the pick'n'mix without any ill effects whatsoever (other than that of the sugar of course). or we'd buy premixed bags - I'm sure a robot didn't make the bags up, indeed they would be counted/prepared by human hands. No biggie.

porcamiseria · 06/05/2010 17:20

lets hope she did not scratch her arse before

honestly! RELAX

Redazzy · 06/05/2010 17:35

Adamadamum, I am having a small chuckle that you felt you had to justify to MN the exact amount of sweets and that it is a rare treat. You have obviously read a lot of AIBU threads!

SoupDragon · 06/05/2010 17:55

What Laurie said. I think there's more chance of the shopkeeper's hands being clean.

inchhighprivateeye · 06/05/2010 18:04

You sound a bit mad and waaaay too uptight about sweets. I wuld have said, done and thought nowt. Except maybe "FFS why have I only got two sweets?"

Shaz10 · 06/05/2010 18:07

What were they?

PixieOnaBallotBox · 06/05/2010 18:12

YABU. Does it really matter?

Do you handle his food with plastic gloves at home?

deaddei · 06/05/2010 18:16

I used to pack sugar in a factory in my uni holidays, and you don't even want to know what went in there- dead flies were the least of it!

oldraver · 06/05/2010 18:19

You wouldn't like me to mention a boy was playing his mother up and she made him take back the large jelly strawberry he had tried to sneak onto the conveyer belt

While she was commenting to the till operrator that she wouldn't give in to him she didnt see him licking it all the way back to the pick and mix

Gibbon · 06/05/2010 18:23

Many a child with unwashed hands would have already touched them as LFC said.

YABU.

kittywise · 06/05/2010 18:27

How silly, honestly

SwissMonsterRavingCheesyParty · 06/05/2010 18:35

If you're going to indulge in sweets, indulge properly .

I'm more shocked you only had 2 sweets tbh !

Oh and yabu

TrinityMeemaRhino · 06/05/2010 18:37

you really are BU

chillax

BAFE · 06/05/2010 18:39

YANBU - I'm flabbergasted so many mumsnetters seem to think this is OK - I'd have walked out of the shop without paying for em

Morloth · 06/05/2010 18:43

Echoing everyone else, the shopkeepers hands would have positively sterile in comparison the the filthy little paws that had already been in there.

Anyone else have the 10 second rule?

BAFE · 06/05/2010 18:45

"Anyone else have the 10 second rule"

I thought it was just our family that had that rule! I didn't realise other people did lol.

booyhoo · 06/05/2010 18:48

as much as i agree with the other MNetters that so many children will have already touched them. upon seeing the guy handle them i would have said, " ugh, ds go and pick some fresh ones."

ridiculous i know but it's what i'd do.

oceryo · 06/05/2010 18:50

YANBU but you have made your point in what you said to the shop assistant.
