i think its disgusting.

as if they are saying, we are marks and spencers and are posh, therefore don't want you single parents shopping here with your "poor people's vouchers", piss off to asda, you are lowering the tone.

the look on the cashier's face when i tried to use my vouchers in there, snobby bitch.

What annoys me most about M&S is the food wastage. We have a 'simply food' nearby and I have a friend who regularly skip dives at 11pm . The amount of food he gets is absurd. Perfectly good meat, veg, sandwiches etc, most with a sell by date of that day but a use by date days away.

Though they are not as bad as Asda who pour bleach onto the things they throw away so nobody has a use for them.

GypsyMoth · 06/05/2010 14:29

oi!! me in a negligee.....now theres a thought!!

i dont think many people use a milkman anymore, unless they have vouchers. its more expensive per pint i think, and horrid bottles hang around the doorstep......ds likes the clatter sound as they fall over!

cupcakesandbunting · 06/05/2010 14:30

A lot of people will say that "ooh M&S value range is very cheap/good value" but I don't think it is. For example a pack of M&S Value range crumpets is 72p and there's six in a pack. Asda and Morrisons both do 8 in a pack for around 52p and they are fine.

Then people well say "well if you can't afford the difference between 52 and 72p, then you're not budgeting very well." If you applied that logic to everything you ever paid for, you'd end up well out of pocket.

cupcakesandbunting · 06/05/2010 14:32

I love the idea of having a milkman but purely in a nostalgic sense.

expatinscotland · 06/05/2010 14:32

I know plenty of people who do qualify for vouchers and free meals but who don't take them for stigma.

cupcakesandbunting · 06/05/2010 14:35

I have a good friend in a similar situation, Expat. She's just been made redundant from her job after working since sixteen and she refuses to sign-on because of the stigma. She's really struggling and won't do it despite us all urging her to.

expatinscotland · 06/05/2010 14:37

My best pal in Glasgow was in a similar situation.

She did wind up signing on and was on contribution-based JSA for 5 months.

But she did find work, so there is hope for your friend!

cupcakesandbunting · 06/05/2010 14:40

Ikeep telling her tha it's a short-term offer of help that she is entitled to because she's paid into that system. Grrrrr, life-long doleys/workshys just don't realise the damage they do. Not only do they bleed us dry, they make genuine people feel ashamed to sign on because of the stigma attached because of them...

I am also at Asda. That is wrong, wrong, wrong.

Who's up for emailing them en-masse and asking them very nicely to stop ruining food and do something with it instead?

expatinscotland · 06/05/2010 14:48

'Who's up for emailing them en-masse and asking them very nicely to stop ruining food and do something with it instead?'

They'll tell you they do it for health and safety reasons and to avoid potential for being sued if a freegan falls ill from eating such food.

And they'll be right.

expat...really
Who would ever sue them?

And why not get involved with a charity or some such?

VivianDarkbloom - shameful attitude.

I have at times been a higher rate tax payer. I am now a single mother and finding less and less work as a freelancer. I'm also hating my work, it is dull.

Hence I am training as a paramedic. I will in the next few months have to give up the house I love, and rent somewhere (with my two young children, one ASD) to persue that career dream.

I will rely on the state for a year or two. Is that wrong?

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 06/05/2010 14:57

Actually sorry Vivian - I didn't read your post properly.

But really we live in a welfare state for good reason. who cares about the reasons?

Are you sure about the tax thing? Here if you go into the higher tax bracket only the portion in the bracket gets taxed at the higher rate, so that can't happen.
seems pretty silly.

Why should the tax payer fund your retraining just because you find a job borring and want to change.

ine to retrain but work at the same time, don't just give up work to retrain.

Sorry if you don't like that but I think benifit is there for support not a life style choice and retraining is a life style choice - it is your choice.

I am all for benifit system as well but feel this is taking the piss

OtterInaSkoda · 06/05/2010 15:38

runny I was going to ask the same.

Vivian I wonder if your friend has misunderstood. There's a thingy here she can play with if she want to see how much tax she'll pay.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 06/05/2010 15:40

Vivian I confuse myself sometimes.

What I mean is, why should we question people that rely on the state?

As far as I know the 'benefits as lifestyle choice' is no longer available.

My brother for example, recent graduate, has to go to every interview the job centre offers

expatinscotland · 06/05/2010 15:44

'expat...really
Who would ever sue them?'

Oh, you'd be surprised! Lots of those no-win, no-fee firms leave fliers around here even.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 06/05/2010 15:46

But as said before...
really....

'I stole food from a bin and it made me ill'

'I declare M&S guilty as charged'

Most of my freegan friends barely have money for new shoes let alone for a court case. Nor would they want one...
