I tried out a new recipe today and made beignets ([[http://www.cafedumonde.com/beignet.html])

My excuse is that I'm the french coordinator at my primary school and I thought they'd be nice for our french day in september. They are just so delicious that I've now eaten 5 and am feeling queasy.

Dh not too bothered about them, so what do I do with teh squillion of beignets left? Bring them in to work to enthuse my colleagues about all things french perhaps, or just eat them all tomorrow?

Did you dip them in coffee made with chicory? I love Cafe du Monde. Used to live in the US and vist a friend in N.Orleans. We'd always end up there at some point on our evenings out.

They don't keep well so I reckon you just have to keep eating!

That recipe starts with Beignet mix

KurriKurri · 04/05/2010 22:02

What are they, and how do you pronounce them? (ignorant emoticon)

Beignets, unlike donuts, have zero calories.

Too many of them so, nonetheless, will make you feel just a little malade.

Sassyfrassy · 04/05/2010 22:14

mine weren't made with mix though =)

I used this recipe: southernfood.about.com/od/doughnutsandfritters/r/bl90626a.htm

I didn't dip them in chicory coffee but I do now have a deep longing to visit new orleans.

pronounciatio (bĕn-yā)
Definition: n. Southern Louisiana

  1. A square doughnut with no hole: "a New Orleans coffeehouse selling beignets, an insidious Louisianian cousin of the doughnut that exists to get powdered sugar on your face" (Los Angeles Times).

I have this idea now to bring in beignet dough to school on friday morning (we have a staff meeting every friday morning) and make a bunch there and then and surprise everyone with warm beignets. Surely that would get them keen on teaching French =)
Maybe I should have mentioned in my job application that I'm a compulsive baker and love to share whatever I make.

'bin yays'

Had them in New Orleans at cafe du monde and didn't see what all the fuss is about but i'm not a doughnut fan. Had to tip half a pound of icing sugar off them to eat them.

Sassyfrassy · 04/05/2010 22:25

I like icing sugar ... a lot. Does make for quite a mess though.
