Now that Avatar AND Titanic have been slagged off, I would like some words about Four Weddings

particularly the words "is it raining? Oh, I hadn't noticed". Honestly woman who's name escapes me but who is on those adverts - what were you THINKING when you said that line in that way? You could've gone all sarcastic and it would have been awesome, but no you didn't.

The funeral scene does make me cry a lot though.

Andie Mcdowell is the annoyingly wooden woman you are thinking of. Another classic is the assumption in America that every 10th Brit owns a castle in the country. That said, I do love this film (although not as much as Love Actually)

LadyPeterWimsey · 04/05/2010 16:24

Actually the main thing that really stinks about this film is Andie McDowell - must be in the 'Top Ten Most Miscast Parts in Films Evah' list.

I quite like the bits that she's not in.

TheCrackFox · 04/05/2010 16:24

Four Weddings is quite good if you compare it with Love Actually which was almost vomit inducing.

BigHairyLeggedSpider · 04/05/2010 16:24

Andy McDowell is it?

Can't stand her. Insipid and wooden.

And the rest of the film is shite as well.

saslou · 04/05/2010 16:24

you are right about the raining line. Tis exceptionally cheesy and always makes me cringe

GetOrfMoiLand · 04/05/2010 16:28

She can't bloody act at all can she.

She was in Greystoke (film about Tarzan ircc) and her delivery was so wooden she was dubbed by Glenn Close).

But the worst thing about 4 Weddings is Hugh Grant. As a sex symbol.

But I do like the film, even if it does play up to the assumption that English = upper middle class, champagne quaffing, vaguely stupid.

Best things in it are Kristin Scott Thomas and that woman from Marmalade Atkins.

juneybean · 04/05/2010 16:28

Least you've all moved on from James Cameron!

However I love Four Weddings also.....

LadyPeterWimsey · 04/05/2010 16:31

The utterly baffling thing is why Hugh Grant would want to shag Andie when he could have had Kristin Scott Thomas. After that monumental lapse in good taste I found it hard to suspend my disbelief any more.

There were some amusing lines, though.

AbsOfCroissant · 04/05/2010 16:31

Yes, that ridiculous stereotype. I was recently watching series three of Desperate Housewives (seriously behind the times emoticon) when Another Annoying American Woman is dating an Englishman, and his parents come to visit so Susan hosts a BBQ for them and they respond with "oh, cooking meat on an open fire. How primitive" when in reality, the most likely response would have been "woo hoo! a BBQ where it's not pissing down! that is something". And then they ask her to sign a pre-nup so that she doesn't get half the castle and it turns out his father cross dresses. I despair.

Titanic, 4Weddings, Love Actually. It's all low hanging fruit.

Pretty Woman. Dirty Dancing. There's Something About Mary. We could go on forever.

I often wonder how Richard Curtis gets such great casts for his, frankly, shitty films.

Don't they read the scripts and say "Oh, fuck, NO, you're recycling the same jokes/characters in every single film"

The Boat That Rocked was so appalling that I actually threw my slipper at the TV.

GetOrfMoiLand · 04/05/2010 16:53

Has anyone seen 'What Women Want' with Mel Gibson.

I would love to hear Dittany's opiniuon on that one.

AbsOfCroissant · 04/05/2010 16:55

I have, but have blanked out most of it, probably for own sanity's sake.

I can't watch 4 weddings anymore. I have something weird going on about watching people who have since died young (like Charlotte Coleman). I can't help it, everytime they come on screen I remember that they were alive and vibrant and now they're dead. It's very morbid I know but my mind just does it and it pulls me out of the story so that I don't enjoy the film.

Andie McDowell was pants though, I used to enjoy watching her and compiling long lists of actors who could have done it much better (lists sometimes included men).

Watched Four Weddings and thought that was a pile of tripe as well.
Just a bunch of upper class knobs making twats of themselves. And Hugh Grant gets on my tits (and not in a good way!) just wanto smack him one for being so frakking wet!

ArsMamatoria · 04/05/2010 18:00

Nothing is as patronisingly awful as the Sex and the City movie.

Love Actually was bloody appalling except for Emma Thompson.

RunawayWife · 04/05/2010 18:04

In the words of Hugh Grant..
Fuck, Fuck Fuckity Fuck Fuck

ChocolateMoose · 04/05/2010 19:15

I like Four Weddings. Except for Andie McDowell, obviously. Love Actually was seemingly spewed out by some computer-generator (except, as you say, for Emma Thompson). The worst film ever for American assumptions about the English must be Three Men and a Little Lady. Anyone remember that?

smallishsheep · 04/05/2010 19:18

I have been known to use fuckadoodledoo though. So it has that going for it.

trixie123 · 04/05/2010 19:31

how do we feel about the bit in Love Actually with Andrew Lincoln holding the cards up to tell Keira (yuk) Knightly he loves her. I think its lovely and want to marry him immediately. one of my friends thinks he is outrageous and out of order cos she is married to his friend. opinions please?

LifeOfKate · 04/05/2010 19:32

Juney, we are lone voices in this sea of cynics! I love this film too, and don't get me started on Love Actually, it is one of my favourites

SpringHeeledJack · 04/05/2010 19:34

I really do agree with bran
