Ok, this is something I would like to know how others would deal with before I decide my further course of action. In Asda yesterday doing my weekly shop with 2yo in trolley, I accidentally bump one of those cage trolley things that hold their stock, the member of staff using it tutted, sighed and gave me an aggressive look, it didn't bump her as she was a few steps away. I thought ok, move on, but as I move on I see something that I would like so I stop at the shelf to pick it up, but it slipped out of my hand and fell to the floor, the the staff member says 'for fuck's sake' ands makes a kind of growling low noise and stares at me straight in the eye. I felt very intimidated. So would you confront her ask what the problem is or would you walk away? I'll tell you what I did in a bit. I know this may seem like nothing but I can't get this out of mind.

for you Soulsu. Hope you get suitable apologies from all concerned and I'll be joining the boycotting of Asda in the meantime!

angel886 · 02/05/2010 22:18

I didn't realise you were in Scotland but I think the law is similar.

I agree that you should go to Asda head office and show them this thread!

I'll also be boycotting Asda in support.

Monty100 · 02/05/2010 22:32

That's disgraceful . I do hope you follow this up.

I was in an Asda today, it was so busy, a guy was wheeling a pallet around in the middle of the aisles, I heard him say to a colleague, 'they see a pallet and think they should stand in front of it' about the customers obviously. Well, I'm sorry but the place was heaving, whey wheel a pallet around??

Awful place it is, absolutely awful.

(Was comparing it to Waitrose while I was in there lol........ well there's no comparison is there).

Always best if you're going to complain to address your complaint to the actual person at the top (so says DH who used to work in the chairman's office at Barclays, handling the complaints that came in). It's worked for me a couple of times. Chief Executive of Asda is Andy Bond (he's stepping down shortly but there's no replacement person yet).

Evenstar · 02/05/2010 22:55

I am shocked that the manager let the incident be reported to the police, I can't imagine that this is the first time that this member of staff has behaved in this way. Surely he and her colleagues are well aware of her aggressive tendencies. I would not rest until I had received a full apology from ASDA and the police. I am also happy to boycott my local ASDA until you get this resolved.

Greenshadow · 03/05/2010 13:19

Sorry, but you are all going to hate me - but...
If an employee goes to her manager claiming she has been assulted, it does have to be taken seriously. At the time, the manager had no way of knowing who was telling the truth. Yes, the police does sound extremely over the top, but it may be that the shop has guidelines to protect it's staff and one of these may to automatically call the police if there is a claim of assult.
I think the OP definately needs to get the whole story down in writing and send it to Asda. I'm not sure I personally would bother to follow it up with the police though.
Good luck.

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 03/05/2010 13:42

I am very at the attitude, especially as she continued to rant with witnesses. One thing I would say is that it should be on CCTV as most of the shop is covered?

Request(or get the police to request as they are already involved!) to have a copy of the tape of the incident, and see what they say?

Good Luck

Can you change supermarket!

oceryo · 03/05/2010 13:45

Complaint to head office. Very good point about the CCTV.

teaandcakeplease · 03/05/2010 14:02

I think I would've behaved the same OP. With my DD in trolley hearing foul language, as well as the staff members attitude I would've had so much adrenaline coursing through my veins and pure anger I'm not sure I'd have been able to think clearly either myself and would've done the same I suspect and then in the ensuing shenanigans with her running to the customer service desk and police and the threats etc. I would've probably not fully explained everything either

As others have suggested, write to head office, address it Andy Bond and fully explain everything.

What a dreadful situation, YANBU in my opinion.

I stopped shopping in Asda where I live and started doing it in the Sainsbury's across the road from it a while ago. As I found the staff and general atmosphere more pleasant. I just buy the basics range on practically everything Only venture into Asda for my kids clothes from time to time now.

Best of luck. Let us all know how it goes.

kitcat1977 · 03/05/2010 15:41

At our Asda they have a CCTV control panel at the front of the store. I find it hard to believe they've really no footage. Push for this.

soulsu · 03/05/2010 20:48

Thanks for your support everyone and for the Asda details you've given me, it is very much appreciated . I have eventually put a letter of complaint together outlining the incident in full including the threat of citizen's arrest and physcial restraint if I left the store, bizarre but true, and how they were not taking my request seriously for them chase up the police to arrive as soon as possible because I had my baby at home needing to be fed. I hadn't included this in my other posts as it was the intial incident I wondered about and what would others have done and whether I had kind of brought this all on myself. The more I think about this and the more I write the more and more bizarre it seems. I cannot believe that this happened to me. I am normally fairly mild mannered but I felt such an injustice on Saturday morning at this woman talking to me in such in aggressive way particularly in front of DD that I made an on the spot decision to challenge her and look where it has got us. My weekend has been completely consumed by this. Anyway here's hoping I get a satisfactory response from Asda. My letter runs to 3 pages so I've not posted it but if you're interested then I can post it and you can let me know what you think. I will let you know the outcome!

It is very bizarre. Good for you on writing letter. I'd just get a friend to read it before sending personally. Just to check it makes sense and to suggest anything to improve it.

Would love to hear how it goes though in due course.

soulsu · 03/05/2010 21:46

Most certainly tea, i will definitely let you know!
