Because she was in fact a bigoted, bigotty pants .

He didnt call her a bigot, he said she was a bigoted woman implying her views were bigoted, its a difference actually, and hes entitled to an opinion.

And anyway I thought he was right - especially if he has misheard her - even if not, I think....

TheCrackFox · 01/05/2010 22:31

She said on the news she isn't going to vote at all now.

MailyDail · 01/05/2010 22:31

she did deserve to be called a bigot, imo, because she expressed herself in a bigoted fashion, all that flooding and raving etc. and he did answer her question, didn't he? said that we brits travel where we are entitled to as well, just as eastern euros can come here.

what she certainly didn't deserve was for the insult to be broadcast across britain and the world, though. i personally thought that gb was rather measured in his comments, i'm sure sky has much worse from cameron et al, but RUpert Murdoch has no incentive to broadcast them.

MailyDail · 01/05/2010 22:33

and agree rhonda with your semantic distinction.

totallydifferenttypeofperson · 01/05/2010 22:34

She sounded bigoted to me. I don't think less of GB for this episode. I won't vote for his party but it's nothing to do with this. His mistake was in being "caught", not in what he said. Every last one of the politicians who has jumped on the bandwagon to criticise will have done as bad or worse - they just didn't do it while wearing a live broadcast mic.

SwissCheeseIsHolyCheesus · 01/05/2010 22:34

She has the right to spoututterrubbish talk about immigration.

Gordon Brown has the right to disagree, and after tolerating her screeching harpy act, call her a bigot in a 'private' bitching moment. Good on him I say, shows he's human.

OP posts:
peasontoast · 01/05/2010 22:35

I expect the media are just enjoying tormenting Brown a bit more before he goes but as usual they are completely irresponsible and embolden people who talk of 'immigrants' in that way, allowing them to think their views are acceptable.

chiccadee · 01/05/2010 22:40

Spot on peasontoast.

SolidGoldBrass · 01/05/2010 22:45

Yes, she was a bigoted old bat. Probably harmless enough ie not the sort to push dogshit through a foreign-looking neighbour's letterbox but a bigoted old bat just the same. And though I don't have much time for Gordon Brown and wouldn't vote for him in a million years, I would certainly have thought better of him if he's said 'Well she is a bigoted old bat and I stand by what I said about her' rather than running off to kiss her arse for the benefit of the Murdoch papers. (Incidentally, it's always a bit funny that the Murdoch media is so anti-immigration when Rupert Murdoch is, er , an immigrant.)

peasontoast · 01/05/2010 22:46

Only 5 more days of this bs and then Brown can go into much needed retirement and the press can get started on Cameron

OctaviaH · 01/05/2010 22:46

er... i dont think nick griffin would call a woman who thought poles were flocking in from EastEu a 'bigot'

Its unfortunate but pretty hilarious imho. What politicians really think of the ppublic.

the guardian had a good article about it by a woman who was really upset by what the woman said (she was polish)

IMO it's the media's fault, the remark was caught by one of sky news' headpieces and they then rushed to find the woman so they could tell her all about...her face fell when they told her. Where's the need?

they then haranged her for hours and hours on the street and camped outside her house...she seems a little bit not quite with it- answered the phone live on sky news and repeatedly tried to walk away from the cameras, presenters had to literally hang on to her to stop her walking away. sh*t stirring.

if you watch the video footage too you see GBs v. v. expensive entourage of cars sweeping out of a very deprived area...its not a nice image at all

OctaviaH · 01/05/2010 22:47
  • becuase nick griffin is a vile racist bigot himself
peasontoast · 01/05/2010 22:52

Yes OctaviaH. I meant if Nick Griffin had talked about eastern europeans flocking in he would have been castigated by all the media falling over themselves to prove how straight they are. Meanwhile a big silent mass of bigots have just been given the green light to come out into the open with their nasty narrow-minded views.

OctaviaH · 01/05/2010 22:58

that's because NG is a bigot and saying that E Euros are flocking over is indicative of that.

I don't really get what your point is. Haven't seen any bigots come crawling out myself, just some very very stirring journalists literally creating a news story.

SwissCheeseIsHolyCheesus · 01/05/2010 23:00

That's my point peasontoast It seems like the media are giving all the bnp voting scum permission to crawl out of the woodwork and air their ill educated, dim witted views.

(and I still havent figured out why pigletmania called me a 'troll' )

OP posts:
OctaviaH · 01/05/2010 23:01

actually, I'm fairly sure griffin has said things like this many many many times over (including such brilliant insights like the Holocaust didn't happen, blacks are lazy etc) and it's utterly non-newsworthy stuff. Because he is a racist bigot.

Floopy21 · 01/05/2010 23:03

I thought she sounded bigoted too. GB's reaction was probably the most human, honest & positive face I've seen on him for a few years TBH. "where are all these Eastern Europeans flocking in from..." - not on IMO.

Floopy21 · 01/05/2010 23:04

Sorry, YANBU!

SwissCheeseIsHolyCheesus · 01/05/2010 23:04

Not so long ago (before all this fiasco) a 'pratt' I got chatting to said to me, 'they should all be lined up and shot, women and children first'....

Unfortunately idiots like that exist, and should not be encouraged.

OP posts:
OctaviaH · 01/05/2010 23:06

and, i believe, the issue is about gordon brown saying sumfin nawsty to the lickle old lady. not whether poles are 'flocking' over here. If you want to get into a discussion about that you'll find plenty of 'bnp voting scum' to argue with, but as immoral as the media have been on this occasion i don't think reporting on an issue touching on immigration is giving anyone permission to air their views, people who think these things do that plenty enough anyway.

emsyj · 01/05/2010 23:06

YANBU. The whole incident improved my opinion of Gordon Brown tbh.

ravenAK · 01/05/2010 23:07

I thought her comment was distinctly off. & I'd've thought more of Brown without the apology, tbh.

Do hope Labour don't lose the election entirely because G. Brown isn't as effortlessly smarmy as T. Blair, but I fear we might.

cupcakesandbunting · 01/05/2010 23:07

She did seem a wee bit bigoted, just because of the way the question was posed i.e where are these eastern europeans flocking in from? I will definitely invite a flaming here but my best mate is from that area and a lot of people of her age in the north of England feel the same as that woman. Don't know if it's because there's a high concentration of immigrants in that area?

peasontoast · 01/05/2010 23:08

Swisscheese, sadly I think there's a bit of paranoia about at the mo' which means almost anyone with a 'political' view is suspected of troll tendencies, all the same I salute you for raising this because I think it's highlighting some crucial issues

fearnelinen · 01/05/2010 23:09

I thought that too! Far too chicken to post here though!
I was rather proud of our GB and pleased to see that one of our politicians is not embracing this DM opinion that 'immigration is to blame' and more to the point it's the 'eastern europeans fault'! Of course he had to placate her, he could hardly have a stand up row, and she was bigoted (and big titted, which was what I heard!)
Less than pleased with the 'who put her in front of me' comment. Er, Gord, you are answerable to ALL of us I'm afraid.
PS - I'm also not a red!
