DS's passport expired and he had had surname changed by deed poll. Name was changed to surname wanted at birth ( but due to being born abroad - country wouldn't allow double barrelled name).

Both my EX-p and I had to agree and sign as we both hold PR (DS born after 2003)

Rang passport office and told just send from with new name and Deed with letter of consent to passport name change. This in itself seemed odd as you can't change name without consent but we did it. Letter read .... we the undersigned who hold joint PR for.... agree to name change etc and signed it.

I then got a letter from office saying courts would not agree to passport unless they had a letter stating no one else held PR!!!

I sent a letter (from me with just my signiture) saying ' I am writing to confirm that no one else hols PR for.... the 2 people who hold PR for.... are the 2 people who signed a letter staing the hold PR for...'

Needless to say passport was produced and delivered within 5 days of sending the letter.

AIBU to have sent such a sarky letter or to be surprised they won't accept a letter from both parents agreeing to name change but will accept a letter from one parent saying no one else has PR???

it's a govt. dept - you have to spell it out (I'm not being very loyal as I was a civil servant!) or nothing ever gets done. I think your letter sounds down to the point and factual and tells them exactly what they wanted to know.

So they neeed something confirming and you did? Am I missing something important here?

just seems to daft to request a letter confirming information required and then requesting one asking you to confirm nothing else is true.

Bit like asking what my eye colour is - blue then asking me to write a letter confirming they are not brown ,green etc!!!
