To HATE going to the hairdressers?

Is it just me? I thought women were mean't to find the whole experience pampering & relaxing- I just come out wanting to kill someone!!! Why is what I want done always wrong? I either need it cut slightly shorter/longer than they want it, or want the wrong type of fringe. All I want to do is have it cut the length I want it with a few layers & a front bit that pushes back, but oh no. I have to have straigteners, backcombing, hairspray & a full discussion on why what I want is not trendy!

AIBU?
Maybe I should go to the barbers next time

Sorry, needed a rant before I explode!

hate it hate it hate it hate it
not been since dec 2008. Do my fringe with kitchen scissors. My brother says it looks like witchy hair.
I hate the noise of the snip snipping choppy chopping round your face, mindless chitty chat and stinky products and the fact I wear specs which they ignore so the hair doesn't suit the specs and you can't bloody see what they have done when they hold a mirror up because your specs are over the other side of the room covered in pissing hairspray and how the chuff are you supposed to drink a cup of nasty instant coffee when they are holding pointysharp things near your ears GAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

I am glad it is not just me

GabrieleJ · 23/04/2010 20:00

Same here, cant stand it!!!
First thing the DON'T EVER GET IT RIGHT no matter how much you;ll pay...
But my biggest problem is that i hate strangers touching my hair... strange i know... but i do...

debaronz · 23/04/2010 20:02

YANBU. I don't like the small talk, usually end up with a cut different to what I wanted and never know if you're meant to leave a tip!

spiderlight · 23/04/2010 20:21

I haven't been near a hairdresser's since 1988. OH just trims it for me.

Alouiseg · 23/04/2010 20:38

Re tipping:- If you go very frequently then i don't think it's necessary except for a generously large note at Christmas.

Less than once a month tip 10-20% but never to the proprietor of the salon.

Joolyjoolyjoo · 23/04/2010 20:51

I have red frizzy curly hair, long and layered and I used to HATE the hairdresser far more than the dentist.

Finally found a lovely hairdresser just before my wedding (about 9 years ago) and have stuck with her ever since, as she understands my hair and I always leave feeling terrific. Unfortunately, she is now a senior stylist and as such I have to pay more, but I only really go twice a year (honestly, she gives me such a good cut it really lasts)

I totally buy into the head massage, the sucking up pampering, the chat...as I say, I've known her since I was single with no kids and now we are both married, me with 3 children, I quite enjoy the catch up. I don't buy myself nice clothes or have any other vanities, but I have learned that a cheap haircut makes me feel dreadful, as I have very difficult hair. Getting my hair cut is the one indulgence I have- into town, no children, pampering, a catch-up with an old friend and I am always confident I will feel fab on leaving. I know it is all a sales pitch, and even my hairdresser's name is not her real name, but I don't care!

Generously large note? 10-20%?

Let's see, lessons for the kids or 'generously large note' for hairdresser who overcharges, anyhow?

Alouiseg · 23/04/2010 21:05

Are you being deliberately obtuse or stereotypically Scottish?

expatinscotland · 23/04/2010 21:09

'stereotypically Scottish?'

Alouiseg · 23/04/2010 21:10

That was quick!

expatinscotland · 23/04/2010 21:11

And that was bordering on the verge of out of order, really.

Alouiseg · 23/04/2010 21:13

Really didn't mean to offend but wondered what she meant?

Hence the "stereotypical" bit. Am very happy to hold my hand up to my own opinions.

LadyBiscuit · 23/04/2010 21:14

Blimey Alouiseg - too much time on your hands? A blowdry nearly weekly??

I have very thick hair too and it looks like shit a lot of the time. However, I cannot be arsed to do much with it except on special occasions.

I loathe going to the hairdresser. I loathe being pampered. A massage and a facial is my idea of hell. I'd rather watch Jeremy Kyle

MiladyDeWinter · 23/04/2010 21:14

Oh God it's true, I always suspected as much but Granny Salons are the way to go as I approach forty.

Then again I live in a town where the card shops are awash with "Happy 50th Birthday Great Great Nanny" cards

Alouiseg · 23/04/2010 21:17

Yup, i reckon it's a time saver tbh. A pro blow dry and i can go 6 days. If i wash and blow dry it's 3 days before it looks crap and it takes at least an hour and a half for me to make it look good.

Granny salons are great, get them to wash and set on big rollers. It's the way forward.

LadyBiscuit · 23/04/2010 21:19

Really??! Hmm maybe I should nip down the granny salon. Doesn't it look greasy in between washes? I normally wash my hair every other day and look like Crystal Tips most of the time. Is looking nice worth the pain of being pampered though? I am not sure

Alouiseg · 23/04/2010 21:24

It looks greasy by the 6th day IF you get a really good blow dryer.

They have to do it till it's bone dry and rigid, no spray, no ghds, no tongs.

6 days of getting out of bed and shaking your locks free.........avoid the brush for as long as possible too. If you need to refresh just tip upside down and blast gently with a hairdryer............trust me i'm a overopinionatedmumsnetaddicted hair junkie.

LadyBiscuit · 23/04/2010 21:28

I'm quite tempted! I quite like the blowdrying bit too - they don't talk because you can't hear them.

I shall report back and on your head be it if I come out looking like the stereotypical Jewish MIL

EmmaBemma · 23/04/2010 21:31

Don't sweat it, Alouiseg. I'm Scottish and I didn't find your remark offensive.

Alouiseg · 23/04/2010 21:43

Thanks Emma

For taking it in the spirit it was intended.

Alouiseg · 23/04/2010 21:45

ladybiscuit You will be shot down in flames about the Jewish MIL remark! (not by me, no chips here)

However, it's a good look............and how i got into my little habit ;-)

LadyBiscuit · 23/04/2010 22:00

I'm from North London - I'm allowed . I have at least three exes whose mothers are reference points in my head here when it comes to their hair.

Does your hair move? I don't want helmet head

Horton · 23/04/2010 22:04

How on earth can people go six days without washing their hair? That sounds rank. I wouldn't go two days without washing my hair or at least getting it thoroughly wet in the shower, personally.

And the OP is clearly NBU. Hairdressers are torture, particularly the small talk and the frigging head massages.

Alouiseg · 23/04/2010 22:05

My hair moves freely, i can run my fingers through it till the 6th day [ewww emoticon]

My epiphany re blow drying actually came from Chigwell, same reference ;-)
