To HATE going to the hairdressers?

Is it just me? I thought women were mean't to find the whole experience pampering & relaxing- I just come out wanting to kill someone!!! Why is what I want done always wrong? I either need it cut slightly shorter/longer than they want it, or want the wrong type of fringe. All I want to do is have it cut the length I want it with a few layers & a front bit that pushes back, but oh no. I have to have straigteners, backcombing, hairspray & a full discussion on why what I want is not trendy!

AIBU?
Maybe I should go to the barbers next time

Sorry, needed a rant before I explode!

Molesworth - I too have very thick hair and yes hairdressers haven't got a clue what to do with it.

I have to be very firm with them as they seem to be obsessed with putting lots of layers in it, which actually makes it look thicker.

I am going to a granny salon in the next couple of weeks as it is massively cheaper and I think they will listen.

Molesworth · 23/04/2010 16:32

If I didn't have layers my hair would resemble an equilateral triangle/portobello mushroom. I have to have huge chunks of hair razored out of mine to thin it. And now I'm going grey it's even more thick and unruly than it used to be

Whoamireally · 23/04/2010 16:32

ROFL at 'granny salon'

lovemyOJ · 23/04/2010 16:34

thats the other thing whether i have to cut of a centimetre or 2 inches its still going to take me the same amount of time as i still have to section the hair the same the only difference is the amount cut off so saying you want a 'quick trim' is silly as i could sit twins in a chair with identical hair length and style one wants a trim the other want 2 inches off and layered it would take the same amount of time to do both

pugsandseals · 23/04/2010 16:40

Wow- I can't believe how many of you hate the hairdressers as much as me! So glad I'm not alone

And yes OJ, I obviously went into more detail & also explained I wanted the same as what I already had, just shorter. How difficult can it be? And why do we always have to have the straighteners out even when I say I don't want them? That's all I end up doing is coming home & washing/drying it the way I like!

Mouseface- I just clicked on your profile and you are exquisite

I too hate hairdressers- I've started getting a woman to come to the house to give me a trim and have given up on hoping for a nice blow-dry. Nobody seems to understand curly hair.

pugsandseals · 23/04/2010 16:41

Love the Granny hairdressers idea- might try that next time!

lovemyOJ, I feel bad about maligning hairdressers now, sorry. They're not all as good as you though

lovemyOJ · 23/04/2010 16:46

if your anywhere near northamptonshire come to me.

i work from home, dont talk unless you want to talk (am rather unsociable hence non salon working) will ask if you want it straightened or not, to be honest i hate the poker straight look, i may use them if you have a random unruly bit that wont go into place, will ask first!

i do honestly belive it is about finding the right person, i will only go to one person i the salon i trained in as she is the only one who cuts my hair the way i like it (but i think thats more because they know me and everyone else wants to do what THEY want to do to my hair)

lovemyOJ · 23/04/2010 16:51

pugs and seals I wanted the same as what I already had, just shorter. How difficult can it be?

not very obviously with out you sat in a chair i could say fully but if it was say 8 weeks since your last cut id just follow the sape from your previous cut IYGWIM? if it was really out of shape then that would possibly be a bit more difficult

does sound like your going to a shite salon

lovemyOJ · 23/04/2010 16:52

sorry that was shocking grammer no commers or anything

i meant, not very, obviously without you sat in a chair in front of me i couldn't...

Molesworth · 23/04/2010 16:52

I'm nowhere near Northants but am tempted to make the trip if you can promise to brutally thin the wiry thicket on my bonce

crumpette · 23/04/2010 16:52

YANBU I hate it, the lighting, the mirrors, the smalltalk, the reception staff, the other customers, the person that massages your head with limp creepy hands, the fungal teenager that completely misunderstands you, the cost, the childcare worries, the results, I HATE IT HATE IT HATE IT

Molesworth · 23/04/2010 16:53

HAHAHAHA @ "fungal teenager"

Meglet · 23/04/2010 16:54

yanbu. It's taken me years to find a salon that understands that taking a hairdryer (even a diffuser) to my long wavy hair is a guaranteed way to make it look frizzy and crap. Think 'Whitesnake / Bon Jovi'.

Now my hairdresser just chats a bit and lets me leave with my hair still damp and clipped back so it dries naturally.

lovemyOJ · 23/04/2010 16:54

oh and your happy to have 2 Dc's running about, another perk of working from home!

expatinscotland · 23/04/2010 16:58

they're forever wanting anyone over 35 to have short hair.

it looks like hell on me.

i invested in a really good pair of scissors and cut it myself like riven.

those scissors have paid for themselves over the years.

it looks the same as when i was paying someone to cut it, tbh.

i do take the girls, but there's a lady at the barber who does theirs for about £8.

i don't see why a trim has to involve washing it, blow drying it and costing £25-£30.

TheCrackFox · 23/04/2010 17:01

I would look like Marjory Dawes form Little Britain if I had short hair.

stressheaderic · 23/04/2010 17:03

I hate the hairdressers too....having to stare at myself in a mirror for 3 hours is pretty hellish, esp when I'm talking and I realise how bad my lisp actually is.

Plus they are ALWAYS running late. And they always try and make me buy their crap shampoo and conditioners that they probably got free anyway.

And the whole business of "is it alright if Chantelle blows you?" Er, while you do what exactly - go for a sly cig outside?

And dont get me started on how much to tip/whether to at all...

I find the whole hairdressing experience most unpleasant.

pugsandseals · 23/04/2010 17:04

Thanks lovemyOJ - That would be seriously fantastic if you are on the Eastern side of Northants! Could get it done on my way home from work! It might be a while before it needs doing again though, it's been cut a little short for my liking!

DeborahDevonshire · 23/04/2010 17:08

I hate it too. They always do my hair beautifully, so no complaints there, but it is so fricking boring sat there with foils on my head. It's a good two and a half hours sat there.

I take a book along and I always think that the stylists are thinking 'ooh look at her with her book bless' in sarcastic manner.

I think they hate me also because I say do.not.massage.my.head when the juniors wash it as I loathe head massages.

And it costs a fortune.

It's either that or look like a spaniel, however.

SkaterGrrrrl · 23/04/2010 17:09

I like gettimg my haircut but I HATE making small talk with hairdresers.

I'll be pleasant, ask how they are etc and then put my nose firmly into a magazine and eyes down, and silence till it's over. I left one hairdresser because she told me every detail of her love life and her cystitis. Look love - this is me time - I dont want to know about a stranger's gynaecological health.

ADuckCalledBill · 23/04/2010 17:19

Oh me toooooo (hence currently having hair like Neil from the young ones)

Can't bear staring at my melon head for so long. I have fine hair as it is and by the time they've sprayed it and combed it I'm starting to look like Skeletor then at the end when they blow dry it I end up looking like that little mushroom bloke from Super Mario bottom right.

Also hate the small talk. Am going to take a book next time

lovemyOJ · 23/04/2010 17:19

email me k(dot)merrey(at)ntlworld(dot)com

Molesworth · 23/04/2010 17:20

ROFL @ neil from the young ones and skeletor!

I always worry that the hairdresser(s) will think I'm being arsey if I don't do the small talk thing. Don't they mind then?
