to want to cry that my ipod is broken?

fartblossom · 21/04/2010 12:15

I know its only an object, but I used my ipod in a variety of ways.

I put it in the docking station when I have a bath/shower, I use it when Im running, I use it when I am ironing, I use it all the time (well maybe an exageration there, but a lot) and now it has broke. Cant afford a new one, have too many songs on my i-tunes to get a cheaper version like a shuffle (tho might have to get one for now to keep me going).

I feel really down about it now. Going to work out a saving plan for a new one while I get another cheap MP3 player for now.

Still upset about it though.

Are you sure it is completly broken?

They can be fixed.

Plenty of places on line do it. You need to see if you can work out what is wrong with it, but it may be salvagable.

Or if you have an Apple store near you they often have a repairs centre attached to them.

fartblossom · 21/04/2010 12:24

I really dont know what is wrong. Plugged it into PC, got a message from windows asking to scan and fix it, said yes, it couldnt do it as it was trying to sync songs from i-tunes (got a new cd yesterday), i-tunes stopped working, it was then I had no songs what-so-ever on my ipod, started again with scanning and fixing it, windows finshed, I started I-tunes then i-tunes stopped syncing after 17 songs (Ive got over 3000 on there and listen to various playlists when my mood takes me). Now I cant get it to sync any more.

Ive looked into getting it fixed, but as I dont know whats wrong, I really cant see how much it will cost.

No we dont have an apple store near us, thanks for the info though. I will look to see if theres one in a near town or city.

Thanks for the advice

I want to cry 'cos I've lost mine.

Hope you can get yours fixed. I think you can post them to Apple as well.

GypsyMoth · 21/04/2010 12:41

Go to apple website and put serial number in repairs section. I did that and sent it to be fixed through them, it's prob an easy thing to repair by sound of it

or restore back to factory settings, you can do that online too

bet you it's not broken!

kreecherlivesupstairs · 21/04/2010 12:42

Any of you can have mine. My dh got it for my birthday (I didn't want it). I can't remember the last time I used it and can't remember where it is (which isn't a lot of use to those I've offered it to). DD likes it, but her ears are too small for the ear bud thingy's.

fartblossom · 21/04/2010 12:43

It wont let me restore as it starts syncing and then cuts out. Although it was something I thought of. I might try that later somehow.

Hijack but anyone know what to do once the battery has worn out?

Mine doesn't hold a charge anymore so has to be permanently plugged in and can only use it in the car. Have restored factory settings but to no avail.

fartblossom · 21/04/2010 12:46

Thanks for the offer Kreecher, but there is no way Id want to just take one and they are going for near enough £100 on a certain internet auction site.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 21/04/2010 12:53

ELC, I think you have to take them to an Apple shop/reseller to have it changed. My friend's husband totally knackered hers and invalidated the warranty by taking the back off. Pillock.

lauradina · 21/04/2010 12:57

You are NOT unreasonable. Some of us really become attached to our iPods (me included). I've had problems with two so far. Sometimes it works to reset them.

Slide the hold switch on and off, then press and hold the menu and centre buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds.

If you still can't reset it, Apple suggests you "set it on a flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the center."

If all else fails and you want to try and fix it yourself, here's a guide of how to:

Good luck!

loopyloo82 · 21/04/2010 12:58

It makes me really cross actually. I bought one for dh's 30th along with other family members - he has a huge music collection so needed the super dooper one which cost around £300 at the time. Now, just over two years later it has broken. He made an appointment with Apple who basically said it was past its warranty, couldn't be fixed, and tried to sell him a newer version. Now, I personally think that if something costs £300 it ought to be made to last rather longer than a couple of years.

Sorry, totally unhelpful but just wanted a rant... suppose I should have done my own AIBU about that

Good luck with yours, I hope it is fixable.

soph87 · 21/04/2010 13:06

Bummer!!! Mine died a week ago and I'm still mourning.

kreecher, how much are you charging for yours?

ScaredOne · 21/04/2010 13:06

I am the same, mine gave up working a while back when running for the first time (he clearly didn't agree with that much wanted weight loss).
Problem is I had a computer crash a while ago and all my data from my computer is gone too. Hadn't figured out how to get the songs from my iPod to the new laptop yet and now that he is broken I somehow think all my songs, audiobooks etc are gone. I am gutted.
So I share your pain!

MrsC2010 · 21/04/2010 13:10

I can't find mine either. It has to be in the house somewhere...

Anyway, try taking it to an Apple shop. If not, a Shuffle is pretty reasonably priced and should keep you going?

lottaluvin · 21/04/2010 13:20

YANBU, I thought I'd lost mine, and it was a prez from DS and has a little inscription on the back from him.

I love music, it's a huge part of my life, and helps with my depression, it can bring me out of the blackets mood.

Mine did the grey screen of death and jammed when i tried to sync it and I found a very helpful guy on youtube giving a demo on how to fix it.

lottaluvin · 21/04/2010 13:35

Try this chappie, or email him on youtube....

kreecherlivesupstairs · 21/04/2010 15:05

Soph87, i couldn't flog it to you if I wanted to. it's either in DD's bedroom or somewhere else in our shitpit flat. We are leaving Switzerland soonish and I've been trying to have a clearout.

Hulababy · 21/04/2010 15:08

Kreecher - why not get some children's headphones or a docking station, then DD can use it happily.

tartyhighheels · 21/04/2010 15:10

I did actually cry when mine broke - it had a sad face on the screen .......

kreecherlivesupstairs · 21/04/2010 15:15

Hulababy, we've got a docking station (just no iPod). DD did have her own MP3 player, but she lost it at school so I wouldn't be happy about letting her have my iPod even yhough i dont' want to use it. [dog in the manger emoticon]

Dollytwat · 21/04/2010 15:16

I agree with you Loppyloo they're so expensive and so fragile.

I bought my DS an ipod touch for Christmas, and he dropped it on Boxing Day and cracked the screen.

I got it fixed for #60 and it now has a rubber case and itsn't allowed out the house. Which is a shame seeing as it's supposed to be taken out and about!

fartblossom · 21/04/2010 17:07

I fixed it!!!!!! Well I managed to restore it and went to sync it, but it stoped before it got to the full 3300+ tracks. So I took off the audiobooks that DH had listened to and it worked

I did want to cry earlier though

OP posts:
benotafraid · 21/04/2010 18:32

Try holding down the menu and centre buttons at the same time, this should reset the ipod (you should see the apple logo) then try and sync it again. Hopefully it will work then

benotafraid · 21/04/2010 18:33

Whoops, I really should read to the end of a thread before posting....

Glad it's working op

Nemofish · 21/04/2010 19:13

Dropped my i-pod shuffle in a hot cup of coffee, yanked it out quick and dried it off, to my amazement it was fine...

I heart my i-pod shuffle.
