My niece is on FB and last week I was working late at night and when I finshed I nipped on FB as my friend lives in NZ and we often have a chat late on. I noticed my niece was on (it was gone 11pm) and 'chatting'to some teenage boys.

I told my sis as I know she goes to bed early and thought she may not know and she says its ok as its school hols and said i was over reacting

What do you think?

Dear CHOCOLATEPEANUT

I blame the parents. Please contact Social Services, now.

I think this child needs a bedtime, holidays or not, she's just 10!

TheFirstLady · 20/04/2010 21:09

Did she know these boys in RL?
Personally, I would not let my 10 year old DD have a Facebook account, nor would I allow her on the computer that late at night even in school holidays, but I appreciate those are individual parenting decisions, as is the decision to let her chat to boys that she knows in RL.
However, a 10 year old should not be chatting to strangers on FB in any circs.

OOps! I think by saying that you lost all your reasoning powers....

Rindercella · 20/04/2010 21:15

I thought you needed to be 13 or older to have a FB account?

I don't think YABU - your sister perhaps has some trouble with setting boundaries with her daughter.

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 20/04/2010 21:18

I have reported her to fb to take her off as shes under age but they have done nothing

its hard when ist family, you stand back and do nothing or get involved and get accused of sticking your nose in

Oooh this is a toughie. My nephew is 7 and can't read and I am dying to jump in with useful strategies/help but I'm afraid as Nelson Madela once said, the worst advice is unsolicited advice. Unless she comes to you and asks your opinion / help, there is nothing you can do.

HOwever YANBU, she shouldn't be on fb at all according to their rules.

How do you know who she was chatting to?

I sometimes go onto my DS's FB account to check what he's up to, that would show as him being online late at night.

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 20/04/2010 21:29

YANBU, but you've told your sister and that's all you can do I suppose.
