to consider wearing reading specs on a chain around my neck?

I am new to the spectacled world. I am now old enough for the joys of needing specs for reading and computering. In between times I am allowed to remain unbespected.

I also have a mempory like a sieve and am expecting to lose my shiney new specs aproximately 143 times a day and never have them when I need them.

AIBU to purcase a stylish chain to wear them around my neck?

I already look like my grandmother so am not worried about the aging properties of such a chain.

Yes chains on specs is kooky and cool.

EccentricaGallumbits · 16/04/2010 17:08

excellent.

having just got the specs I have had to go and tweeze my beard and mustache as it was even worse than I thought it was.

It's quite a revelation to actually see things a bit clearer and I never though I was quite so blind.

Do not wear tweed though.

Lonicera · 16/04/2010 17:15

I wear mine in my hair when Im not using them.

And top tip : get several pairs and leave them in strategic places round the house

AgentZigzag · 16/04/2010 17:20

Only if you peer over the top of your glasses when you're talking to someone

multitask · 16/04/2010 17:20

Absolutely!! Been doing it a while now, few funny looks but alternative is losing them!

Latootle · 16/04/2010 17:31

yeh great go for it. nothing worse than not being able find your specs when you need them

TiggyD · 16/04/2010 19:32

Very Hinge and Bracket!

MayorNaze · 16/04/2010 19:33

i wear my prescription sunglasses and regular glasses round m neck in the summer as if i have to go inside unexpectedly i can then swap pairs

i think it gives me a rather intriguing sense of mystique

Cicatrice · 16/04/2010 19:36

Go for it.

MayorNaze I like the prescription sunglasses idea and shall adopt it .

RustyBear · 16/04/2010 19:42

Is Whizzzz still around on MN? - she made me some really great beaded chains for my glasses a few years ago.

EccentricaGallumbits · 17/04/2010 09:30

now for my next question.

where might i buy a cool and funky sort of spectacle chain (as opposed to the hinge and bracket variety)?

If youo google loads of pages come up. I too am recenlty bespecaled (is that right?) and was looking for a chain too.

Some nice beaded ones around...

GentleOtter · 17/04/2010 09:37

edible chocolate spectacle chain

I was gutted when it said that they are not really made from chocolate...

EccentricaGallumbits · 17/04/2010 09:47

what's the point of that then? if you can't eat it then it isn't edible.?
will peruse.

Someone put a link on a similar thread with some really funky chains.
I am planning to get one as I hope it will make me look a bit edgy and cool

5Foot5 · 17/04/2010 15:14

Oh if you find a cool funky one do pass on the information.

I have needed specs for reading for about 18 months now but I can't wear them for other things e.g. watching TV or talking to people. Consequently I am forever whipping them off at work, especially in meetings, and sometimes I do find myself peering over the top of them.

At home I keep putting them down and forgetting them and DH has suggested a chain but I have resisted because I thought it would make me look like Jenni Murray.

Eccentrica: similar experience with tweezing!

chipmonkey · 17/04/2010 16:02

Word of warning: wearing specs on a chain can cause specs to swing around and bang into things and get scratched.
We do some nice ones but I'm in Dublin so probably not much help!

And wearing specs on head causes stretching of frames.

Right, lecture over. As you were.

MmeLindt · 17/04/2010 16:06

Agree with Chipmonkey, wearing glasses on head stretches frame and you have to go the optician and get them fixed. Sorry, Chipmonkey.

Never thought of putting the normal glasses on a chain when wearing sunglasses. I find it awkward when driving.
